  • Patent number: 10286446
Abstract: Spray nozzle device for spraying a cast strand or similar metallurgical products with a misty air/water mixture for uniformly cooling the cast strand. The air/water mixture is produced in a mixing chamber which acts as a diffusor and includes an air inlet, a water inlet, and a nozzle outlet approximately in alignment with the air inlet. The air inlet is arranged in an air inlet nozzle, the tip of which protrudes into an upper region of the mixing chamber and preferably has air outlet holes oriented perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the mixing chamber. Water enters near the tip through at least one water outlet hole oriented perpendicular to the longitudinal axis and placed such that the water jet exiting the water outlet hole flows past the air outlet holes. The air flow or air pressure and the water flow or water pressure do not influence each other.

  • Patent number: 8631854
Abstract: With a continuous casting method for producing preliminary profiles, in particular double T preliminary profiles, the downwardly flowing cooling water is pushed out of the internal curve of the preliminary profile strand (3) via the profile flanges and discharged using water nozzles (21, 22) aligned substantially to the crossover from the bar (4) to the respective flange (5, 6) by means of the diverting water delivered via the water nozzles (21, 22). In this way the excessive cooling caused by downwardly running cooling water is largely avoided in the internal curve of the preliminary profile strand.

  • Publication number: 20130333473
Abstract: Continuous casting moulds used in automated installations casting metal melts into strands require comprehensive, reliable real-time monitoring. Currently used systems are susceptible to damage and limited to just a few sensors, as arrangements involving a higher number of sensors have proven impractical due to the substantial effort they cause when exchanging a mould. To overcome this obstacle it is suggested to use wirelessly interrogable passive surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors for monitoring of physical parameters in continuous casting moulds, and install at least one wireless link section in the signal path between SAW sensors and their reader devices. Continuous casting moulds thus become easily exchangeable with their sensors installed, making it industrially practicable to equip continuous casting moulds with a significantly higher number of sensors than previously feasible.

  • Patent number: 8564656
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for recognizing surface characteristics of metallurgical products, especially continuously cast products and rolled products. According to said method, a defined section of the product surface (12, 12?) is irradiated by at least two radiation sources of different wavelengths, from different directions, and the irradiated surface section is optoelectronically detected. Three light sources (21, 22, 23) are oriented towards the product surface (12, 12?), as radiation sources, under the same angle (a), the positions thereof being in three planes (E1, E2, E3) forming a 120 DEG angle and being perpendicular to the product surface (12, 12?). In this way, instructive information about metallurgical products can be determined and stored in a very short space of time such that the products can be determined in a perfectly identified manner for the reprocessing, in terms of the surface quality or surface structure thereof.

  • Patent number: 8381794
Abstract: Mold for the continuous casting of preliminary sections, in particular double T-shaped preliminary sections, such as beam blank sections or similar sections, wherein all the interior walls of the mold in a mold passage have a tapered course running linearly from top to bottom, this tapered course being dimensioned depending on the degree of shrinkage of the cast strand and produced by machining the interior walls. In this manner, it is possible to optimally adjust the diameter of the mold to the shrinkage process of the cast strand in the region of the mold passage, even for large-sized sections.

  • Patent number: 8302662
Abstract: A continuous casting plant in particular for long steel products is provided with a mould (1), from which a cast strand (2) is continuously cast. The cast strand (2) is guided along a, in particular curved, guideway formed by guide rollers (11, 12, 13, 14) arranged one after the other, and at the same time in a cooling chamber having spray members. The guide rollers (12, 13, 14) and/or the spray members are contained in a plurality of centring modules (10) or spray modules (3) arranged one after the other and are adjustable in a controlled manner substantially concentrically with respect to the desired axis of the cast strand. As a result, on the one hand, the risk of thermally overloading the rollers and damaging the strand surface is considerably reduced and symmetrical cooling is ensured.

  • Patent number: 8267150
Abstract: An apparatus for starting the casting of a continuous casting system has a mold (2) and a strand guide (10; 10?) comprising drive and guide rollers (11, 12; 11?, 12?). Moreover, a dummy bar (22) that can be introduced into the mold (2) by the strand guide (10; 10?) and be withdrawn from said mold is provided. A safety device (20; 20?) for the dummy bar (22) has an element (25) that can be engaged, with form fit, with the dummy bar (22) and limiting the speed of the cold bar (22). It is thus guaranteed that a predetermined maximum strand speed can not be exceeded and that the dummy bar does not slide through.

  • Patent number: 8171983
Abstract: A mold for the continuous casting of blooms, slabs or billets is provided with a mold tube (2) and a supporting shell (4) surrounding said mold tube. The mold tube (2) is supported by support profiles (15) on the supporting shell (4) extending in its longitudinal direction and distributed over the periphery and is positively connected thereto via connecting profiles (20) extending in the longitudinal direction. The connecting profiles (20) are respectively configured as profile strips (21, 22) outwardly projecting from the outer periphery of the mold tube (2) and inwardly projecting from the inner periphery of the supporting shell (4), which engage in one another such that in the peripheral direction of the mold a clearance is present. As a result, the stresses, permanent deformation and fatigue cracks produced by the thermal expansion in the mold tube are substantially avoided.

  • Patent number: 8151864
Abstract: In a system for sealing a dummy bar head in a mould of a continuous casting plant for casting large-format preliminary sections, a flat gasket (6) to seal the gap between the dummy bar head and the mould is provided, which is held on a packing plate (7) contained on the dummy bar head. Said packing plate has approximately the cross-sectional shape of the mould profile and covers the flat gasket (6). The packing plate (7) is displaceable towards the centre of the mould by an amount which is a function of the conicity of the mould (3). To this end, it consists of two plate halves (7a, 7b) lying in one plane with respect to each other. This makes it possible, when inserting the dummy bar head, to compensate for the angled course of the mould with the contracting packing plate until the sealing gap between packing plate and mould remains uniform on all sides.

  • Publication number: 20120037331
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and a device for guiding and orienting a strand (5) in a continuous casting facility for large-sized round sections made of steel or a similar material. In order to prevent the formation of cracks while the strand is oriented, the outer surface (15) of the strand is heated from above and from below inside the orienting track. For this purpose, porous burners (10, 17) are arranged in the discharge section of the directing track, the hot gas emitted from said burners flowing entirely around the outer surface (15) of the strand.

  • Patent number: 8109320
Abstract: In a method and apparatus for the continuous casting of preliminary steel sections, the liquid or molten steel is introduced substantially vertically into an open-ended die. The cross section of the cavity of the die is made up of a web part and one or more flange parts, for example, such as in preliminary double-T sections. The liquid core of the strand of the preliminary section is set in agitating motions transversely to the direction of continuous casting by selectively using electromagnetically-induced forces in the regions of the flange parts and/or of the web part. The agitating motions have the effect of exchanging the liquid steel in the molten crater of the strand of the preliminary section in and between flange parts and the web part.
