  • Patent number: 3981347
Abstract: A method of, and apparatus for, the cooling of a strand during the continuous casting of metals, especially steel, wherein a cooling fluid possessing a regulatable quantity for impingement at the surface of the strand is sprayed between two guide elements neighboring one another in the direction of strand travel onto the strand surface. According to the invention, the cooling liquid or fluid is selectively sprayed from one spray pattern or two spray patterns which are essentially similarly directed and initially extend behind one another in the direction of travel of the strand and thereafter are united into a spray pattern having a flat spray characteristic, wherein the united spray pattern has a thickness and direction which approximately corresponds to that of one of the adjacently situated spray patterns.

  • Patent number: 3970135
Abstract: A method of applying flux powder to the bath level of liquid metal within a continuous casting mold during continuous casting operations, wherein the distribution of the flux powder at the surface of the bath level is measured by measuring elements, and as a function of the measurement results there is controlled the infeed of flux powder and the distribution thereof at the bath level.

  • Patent number: 3963069
Abstract: A roller apron framework for support- or drive rolls of a continuous casting installation wherein at least at one strand guide path each two rollers or rolls which follow one another in the direction of travel of the continuously cast strand are mounted in a common pivotal yoke and such yoke can be moved by piston-cylinder units substantially transversely with respect to the guided surface of the strand. The yoke is provided with impact surfaces and can be applied by means of the piston-cylinder units against support surfaces associated with each roller, the support surfaces being arranged at a stationary frame and limiting the path of application or adjustment of the rollers at the strand.

  • Patent number: 3946797
Abstract: An apparatus for continuous casting with high throughput, wherein the metal to be cast, typically steel, is poured into a cooled mold, the strand which is formed and possessing a liquid core is withdrawn, guided and cooled. The continuous casting installation embodies a casting vessel and a cooled mold. The first partial region or zone following the mold comprises a strand guide assembly formed of plates and/or grids equipped with devices for the infeed of a cooling agent. The second partial zone or region comprises a closed pressurized compartment with means arranged at its ends for sealing the throughpassing strand. Within such compartment there are arranged rollers for guiding the strand along a predetermined path of travel and devices for conveying the same as well as for the infeed of the cooling agent.

  • Patent number: 3946795
Abstract: A method of and apparatus for regulating the molten metal level in the mold of a continuous casting installation wherein deviations from a reference value determined by measuring the molten metal level in the continuous casting mold are overcome by regulating the infeed of metal to the mold and/or by regulating the withdrawal speed of the strand from the mold. The invention contemplates simultaneously delivering the adjustment values or magnitudes generated at the metal infeed regulation circuit to the strand withdrawal regulation circuit and changing the predetermined or preset reference value of the withdrawal regulation as a function of such adjustment values in accordance with a predetermined or preset function and this function is prescribed or preset such that the reference value of the withdrawal regulation is only then influenced when the change in the adjustment value in the infeed regulation circuit per unit of time exceeds a predetermined or preset value.

  • Patent number: 3946792
Abstract: A method of operating a continuous casting installation with high throughput wherein a metal, typically steel, is cast into a cooled continuous casting mold, withdrawing from the mold the cast strand possessing a liquid core and which is formed in such mold, guiding and cooling the withdrawn strand. At least in a partial zone between the mold and the complete solidification of the strand the strand surface is subjected to the action of a pressurized gaseous medium, primarily in the form of water vapor, the pressure of the gaseous medium essentially corresponding to the ferrostatic pressure prevailing in the strand, the water vapor being generated by spraying the strand surface with water, and deviations in the vapor pressure from the required vapor pressure are compensated.

  • Patent number: 3946630
Abstract: A pendulum shear for a continuous casting installation wherein the shear is provided with a mechanical drive for a pulse-like cutting operation, a knife or cutter rigidly connected with the pendulum and movable by a driven crank towards a second knife. Further, there is provided mechanism for accelerating the pendulum out of its rest position at approximately the maximum knife opening in the direction of travel of the strand, this mechanism, prior to the cutting operation, accelerating the pendulum at its cutting region to a speed approximately corresponding to the speed of travel of the strand. The mechanism for the acceleration of the pendulum consists of a guide arranged at the stand or housing and guides the pendulum along its path between the rest position and the start of the cutting operation, and the cooperation of this guide with the pendulum moved by the crank controls such acceleration.

  • Patent number: 3931848
Abstract: A method of cooling a strand cast in an oscillating mold during continuous casting, wherein the strand during passage through the mold is indirectly cooled in a first zone and guided at all sides and in a final or terminal zone is guided by substantially strip-shaped support surfaces extending essentially in the direction of travel of the strand as well as directly cooled by water guided in a substantially strip-shaped configuration along the strand. The strand, following such indirect cooling and prior to the strip-shaped direct cooling, is directly cooled in an intermediate zone by the application of sprayed water. The mold arrangement used for the performance of the method comprises a first cooling device composed of cooled walls bounding the mold compartment or cavity and a terminal cooling device composed of strip-shaped arranged support surfaces disposed approximately parallel to the lengthwise axis of the strand and strip-shaped cooling water channels located between the support surfaces.
