  • Patent number: 6044884
Abstract: A pneumatic vehicle tire has a carcass with at least one radial ply and beads having bead cores, whereby the carcass is anchored to the bead cores. A multi-ply belt is positioned radially outwardly on the carcass, and a tread is positioned radially outwardly on the belt. Sidewalls extend between the tread and the beads. The sidewalls have a first portion extending from the beads outwardly at an angle of 0% to 20% relative to the axial direction of the tire. The sidewalls have increased stiffness within the area of 50% to 90% of a tire height measured in a direction from the bead to the tread. The area of 50% to 90% prevents the sidewalls from touching the road surface when the tire is deflated and compressed.

  • Patent number: 6030479
Abstract: Device and process for constructing a carcass and for preshaping an unvulcanized rubber tire includes a preshaping device. An axially adjustable hollow, cylindrical body associated with the preshaping device has a radially outermost surface. An adjustment device capable of adjusting an axial position of the cylindrical body between an operating position and a rest position is provided. A second body having a radially outermost surface is adapted to form a substantially cylindrical, sealed construction surface with the radially outermost surface of the cylindrical body in the operating position. The preshaping device, in the operating position, is positioned axially inside the cylindrical body in a same axial position as the cylindrical body to enable positioning the carcass without the carcass being affected by the preshaping device.

  • Patent number: 6026875
Abstract: Vehicle tire and a metal sheet mold plate for forming the vehicle tire having at least one axial end section includes a tread that includes sipes running substantially axially in at least one of the axial end sections when viewed from the top (i.e., perpendicular to the tread surface). The sipes are corrugated to form corrugated ridges and valleys that are substantially straight lines diagonally inclined in an oblique plane parallel to the substantially axially running sipes. The substantially axially running sipes may include a first set of sipes and a second set of sipes. The corrugated ridges and valleys of the first set of sipes are oriented, with regard to a radially outward direction, to extend axially inwardly toward (i.e., toward a axial center of the tire). Conversely, the corrugated ridges and valleys of the second set of sipes are oriented, with regard to the radially outward direction, to extend axially outwardly (i.e., away from the axial center of the tire).

  • Patent number: 5962931
Abstract: The invention relates to an electric brake system for a motor vehicle and a method for operating the same. In conventional electric brake systems, the energy consumers (6, 8a, 10a, 14b, 16b, 30a, 30b) are connected to the voltage source (24a, 24b) when a switch-on signal is applied. This has the problem associated therewith that, when the switch-on signal is absent for any particular reason, the energy consumers (6, 8a, 10a, 14b, 16b, 30a, 30b) can be disconnected from the voltage source (24a, 24b) during operation of the motor vehicle. This problem is avoided in that the energy consumers (6, 8a, 10a, 14b, 16b, 30a, 30b) remain connected to the voltage source independently of the presence of the switch-on signal. A disconnection of the voltage source from the energy consumers (6, 8a, 10a, 14b, 16b, 30a, 30b) is only triggered by the computer unit (6, 30a, 30b) by driving an ignition-switch device 28.

  • Patent number: 5957551
Abstract: A process and device for starting a motor vehicle having a braking system in which a brake force is at least partially supplied by at least brake energy storage devices. Prior to starting a motor vehicle, the vehicle is initially switched into a non-drivable state in which the vehicle is disabled from movement. A charging state of each brake energy storage device may be checked to ensure an adequate charging state. If the charging state of at least one of the brake energy storage devices is greater than or equal to a predetermined minimum charging state, the vehicle may be switched into a drivable state and, thus, operable by the driver.

  • Patent number: 5949168
Abstract: The invention relates to an electric motor having a locking device and a brake actuator for an electric system which includes such an electric motor. The locking brake has a simple configuration and includes a conical ring which is mounted so as to be axially displaceable on the motor shaft of the electric motor of the brake actuator. In a first axial position, the conical ring (26) permits a rotation of the motor shaft (12) in both directions and, in a second axial position, the conical ring is in engagement with the motor shaft (12) and rotates with the latter. In the second axial position of the conical ring (26), a rotation of the motor shaft (12) in one rotational direction leads to the situation that the conical ring (26) is in engagement with the lock ring (24) of the brake actuator (2). The lock ring (24) is fixed so that it cannot rotate relative to the motor shaft (12).

  • Patent number: 5944926
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a tire carcass includes the step of providing a liner of an air-impermeable material. A carcass ply material is prepared by heating and stretching plastic cords and embedding the stretched plastic cords in rubber. A ply of the carcass ply material is placed onto the liner with overlapping leading and trailing ply ends. The overlapping ply ends are heated for returning the stretched plastic cords into an unstretched state. Bead cores are then positioned onto the ply. The lateral edges of the ply are folded over the bead cores. The folded lateral edges and the bead cores are then enveloped by lateral strips.

  • Patent number: 5926017
Abstract: A device for measuring a rotary frequency of a rotating vehicle tire includes a number of first poles uniformly arranged on a circle with a radius R1 on or within a vehicle tire. A first sensor, for sensing the first poles, is stationarily arranged at a distance R2 from a rotational axis of the vehicle wheel. The radii have the following relationship: 0.9 R1<R2<1.1 R1. A computing unit is connected to the first sensor. The first sensor sends first signals to the computing unit when the first poles pass the first sensor. The computing unit determines a first time period between passing of sequential ones of the first poles. The computing unit multiplies a reciprocal value of the first time period by a reciprocal value of the number of the first poles to a multiplication product and supplies the multiplication product as a measure of a first rotary frequency to a user device.

  • Patent number: 5913240
Abstract: A method for determining a longitudinal force acting during tire rotation on a tire mounted on a wheel rim includes the step of determining the torsional deformation of the tire, which is a function of the location of measurement, between a radially inner area of the wheel or the hub and a radially outer area of the tire in at least one non-rotating position. At least two marks are positioned at the wheel on different radii relative to an axis of rotation of the wheel, wherein a radially outer mark is positioned on a radially outer area of the tire. At least two sensors are non-rotatingly arranged in the vicinity of the wheel so as to be positioned on the different radii, wherein a radially inwardly arranged sensor is connected to a steering knuckle and a radially outwardly arranged sensor is connected to a transverse suspension arm of the wheel suspension. For the rotating wheel at least one time period between passing of the at least two marks at the at least two sensors is recorded.
