    Abstract: The presence of a cardiac pulse in a patient is determined by evaluating physiological signals in the patient. In one embodiment, a medical device evaluates optical characteristics of light transmitted into a patient to ascertain physiological signals, such as pulsatile changes in general blood volume proximate a light detector module. Using these features, the medical device determines whether a cardiac pulse is present in the patient. The medical device may also be configured to report whether the patient is in a VF, VT, asystole, or PEA condition, in addition to being in a pulseless condition, and prompt different therapies, such as chest compressions, rescue breathing, defibrillation, and PEA-specific electrotherapy, depending on the analysis of the physiological signals. Auto-capture of a cardiac pulse using pacing stimuli is further provided.

    Abstract: A fast acting flow control valve uses an electronically-actuated, short-stroke 3-way pilot poppet to actuate a primary poppet valve, for example, to provide impulse thrust to an air or space vehicle. The pilot poppet arrangement has an electromagnetic actuator for positioning the pilot poppet with respect to first and second seats. When the pilot poppet is sealed against the first seat a pressure passage communicates with seat openings and a vent passage of the valve is blocked from the seat openings. When the pilot poppet is sealed against the second seat the pressure passage is blocked from the seat openings and the vent passage communicates with the seat openings. The primary valve arrangement has a primary poppet that seals against a primary seat when the pilot poppet is sealed against the first seat and is unseated when the pilot poppet is sealed against the second seat.

    Abstract: A device and system for monitoring and controlling the flow media through a flow circuit, for example, the flow of coolant through a coolant circuit of a turbine engine fuel system, measures flow rates at the supply and return sides of the circuit and compares the measured flow rates against a threshold flow rate difference to detect the presence of a flow leak condition. Upon detecting a leak condition, the controller automatically operates a flow control valve to shut off flow to the flow circuit for repair of the leak or other low flow condition. The controller can also include components for measuring the temperate of the flow media at one or both of the supply and return sides of the circuit. The measured temperature signals can be processed to detect a high or low temperature condition. Upon detecting a low temperature condition, the controller automatically reduces the flow rate of the flow media until the condition has been corrected.

    Abstract: A system and method scrub a vapor. In embodiments, a vacuum truck scrubber system includes a liquid vat, a first carbon canister, a second carbon canister, and a third carbon canister. The first carbon canister and the second carbon canister each contain carbon. The liquid vat is connected to the first carbon canister. The first carbon canister is connected to the second carbon canister. A vapor having contaminants is fed to the liquid vat and is introduced from the liquid vat to the first carbon canister wherein a portion of the contaminants is removed from the vapor. The vapor is introduced from the first carbon canister to the second carbon canister wherein another portion of the contaminants is removed. The vacuum truck scrubber system also includes a monitoring system for reading and recording of sample measurements in the first carbon canister, the second carbon canister and the third carbon canister.

    Abstract: RFID-based sensors, RFID readers and software sense a changed condition. In one embodiment, an RFID-based sensor includes a base that may be placed at a location where a condition may change. The sensor includes an RFID tag that is coupled to the base. The sensor also includes a detector that can be electrically coupled to the RFID tag. If the condition changes, an electrical property of the detector also changes, impacting an operation of the RFID tag. The impacted operation can be detected by an RFID reader/interrogator so as to provide a notification. An advantage over the prior art is that the condition change can be sensed wirelessly over a domain that can be laborious or hazardous to access otherwise. Moreover, RFID based sensors can be made by modifying common RFID tags.

    Abstract: An active combustion control device provides modulated fuel flow to the combustor of a turbine engine to mitigate combustion instability. The device includes a valve unit and an electronic valve driver controlling translation and rotation components in the valve unit that drive a metering member having a modulating end. The axial position and rotation of the end geometries relative to static flow ports inside the valve unit modulate the fuel flowing from the valve unit to the combustor atomizer. The amplitude and frequency of the modulated fuel flow match that of the instable combustor fuel flow and the phase is offset by 180 degrees so that the resultant fuel flow is at or near a stable state.

    Abstract: A medical device such as an external defibrillator delivers electrical therapy using a special ascending, biphasic waveform. The special waveform is characterized by a set of at least two peaks. The amplitude of the second peak is greater than the amplitude of the first peak. The waveform is generated by switching capacitance configuration in the defibrillator from a parallel configuration to a series configuration while the defibrillator is delivering the defibrillation shock to the patient. Because of the switching capacitances and/or the waveform, the external defibrillator can be made physically smaller and weigh less, without sacrificing the therapeutic effect of a larger external defibrillator that would deliver a defibrillation shock of higher energy. As such, the defibrillator is easier to configure for transporting, handling, and even wearing.

    Abstract: Embodiments operate in contexts where field data have been generated from a field event, and annotations have been generated from the field data, which purport to identify events within the field data, such as CPR compressions and ventilations. Metrics are generated from the annotations, which are used in training. In such contexts, a grade may be assigned that reflects how well the annotations meet one or more accuracy criteria. The grade may be used in a number of ways. Reviewers may opt to disregard field data and metrics that have a low grade. Expert annotators may be guided as to precisely which annotations to revise, saving time. A low grade may decide that the results are not emailed to reviewers, but to annotators. A learning medical device can use the grade internally to adjust its own internal parameters so as to improve its annotating algorithms.
