Abstract: Disclosed is a method for diagnosing allergy in a human or animal patient, wherein the level of species-specific lipocalin, especially lipocalin 2 in a human patient, is measured in a sample of said patient and wherein a lowered level of said lipocalin compared to the level of said lipocalin in the corresponding sample of a human or animal that has no allergy, is indicative of an allergy, as well as a kit for performing this method, and a kit for quality control of allergen molecules or extracts used for immunotherapy of allergy by determining its siderophore-iron ligand load and thus immunomodulatory potency. Further, lipocalin proteins for use in treatment or prevention of allergies are provided, preferably complexed with siderophore-iron ligands.

Abstract: The invention provides methods for the synthesis of a halichondrin macrolides through a macrocyclization strategy. The macrocyclization strategy of the present invention involves subjecting a non-macrocyclic intermediate to a carbon-carbon bond-forming reaction (e.g., an olefination reaction (e.g., Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons olefination), catalytic Ring-Closing Olefin Metathesis, or Nozaki-Hiyama-Kishi reaction) to afford a macrocyclic macrolide. The invention also provides compounds useful as intermediates in the synthesis of a halichondrin macrolides and methods for preparing the same.

Abstract: Methods for encoding data in synthetic DNA include, for an input data sequence, constructing a codebook of a number of unique codewords, of a nucleotide length, which are constructed such that, for each codeword, the codeword is formed from a selection of nucleotide pairs from a first predefined dictionary of nucleotide pairs, and, if the nucleotide length of the codeword is odd, an additional selection of a nucleotide from a second predefined dictionary of individual nucleotides. For each symbol from the input data sequence, at least one codeword is designated as associable therewith, and each symbol is coded as one codeword selected from the designated at least one codeword associable with that symbol. A code is formed from the codewords, arranged in corresponding order to that of their respective symbols in the input data sequence. A DNA sequence is synthetized with nucleotides ordered to match the code.

Abstract: Travel pillow apparatus, storage apparatus for the travel pillow apparatus, and methods of manufacture and use. In one embodiment, the travel pillow apparatus, includes an external covering, the external covering including upper and lower support structures; an air bladder apparatus that includes an expandable open-cell foam within an interior of the air bladder apparatus. The air bladder apparatus is further shorter in length than the external covering, such that the air bladder apparatus is not intended to be positioned towards the back of a neck of a user that is utilizing the travel pillow apparatus. A storage apparatus with a one-way expulsion valve for storage of, for example, the aforementioned travel pillow apparatus. Methods of manufacturing and using the aforementioned apparatus are also disclosed.

Abstract: This invention relates to an antimicrobial composition, especially one which provides synergistic anti-dandruff or anti-acne efficacy. This is achieved through a judicious combination of select essential oil actives chosen from thymol, or terpineol and certain antimicrobial lipids selected from sapienic acid, palmitoleic acid, sphingosine, dihydrosphingosine, phytosphingosine, and 6-hydroxysphingosine. These compositions can be delivered through very many different types of personal care products e.g. shampoo, conditioner; face wash or hand wash product; or a leave on cream/lotion.

Abstract: A computer-implemented method for verifying identity of a speaker is proposed. A low dimensional p-vector based on a speech of the speaker is extracted from the generated high dimensional speaker model and is then compared with the stored specific speaker's p-vector obtained previously during the enrollment process. The resulting biometric score is then used to determine whether to verify the speaker, or not.
Abstract: A digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and a method for operating the DAC are disclosed. The DAC receives, over a first channel, a control signal that is transmitted in accordance with a binary protocol. The DAC also receives, over a second channel different than the first channel, data that is transmitted in accordance with a multilevel communication protocol that is different than the binary protocol. The DAC determines a plurality of first and second voltages based on the received data and identifies, based on the control signal, a time when data transmission or reception is switched between first and second antennas. In response to identifying, based on the control signal, the time when data transmission or reception is switched, the DAC outputs the determined plurality of first voltages to a first antenna tuning circuit or the determined plurality of second voltages to a second antenna tuning circuit.
