Patent number: 5232342Abstract: A high pressure multi-stage centrifugal pump with an axially split casing (10) and a number of impellers (14) carried by a drive shaft (12) has inter-stage bushings (24) and rings (22) for sealing each side of each impeller. Each bushing (24) or ring (22) is conventionally prevented from rotating by a radial pin protruding from the lower half of the casing (10) into an axial slot in the periphery of the bushing or ring. The pin is necessarily small and is liable to shear, difficult to engage in the slot and, in cases where the bushing (24) or ring (22) is diametrically split, does not allow rotation of the lower half for its removal without lifting the shaft (12). To avoid all these disadvantages, without introducing any risk of leakage, a tangential pin (32) is fitted in a blind hole (34) in the casing (10) so that its exposed end (37) is flush with the joint face (28) of the casing and abuts against a shoulder ( 44) formed by a recess (38) in the periphery of the bushing (24) or ring (22).Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 1992Date of Patent: August 3, 1993Assignee: David Brown Engineering LimitedInventor: Peter Thompson

Patent number: 5225756Abstract: A stepper motor driver circuit applies charging current to one phase of a two-phase stepper motor in a Sine wave configuration while simultaneously applying charging current to the opposing winding in a Cosine wave configuration to carefully control the position of the motor. To reduce memory storage requirements and therefore reduce size and cost, only quarter of the Sine and Cosine waveforms are stored in memory and with additional circuitry, reconstruction of the complete wave form is realized. Furthermore, the resulting circuitry provides the user with a Full Step position output thereby reducing the need for the controlling microprocessor to count micro-steps over long moves to monitor the motor position.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 1992Date of Patent: July 6, 1993Assignee: David J. Patent number: 5224100Abstract: A routing process for a single-instruction-multiple-data (SIMD) multi-level hierarchical network of nodes, which are arranged in clusters and interconnected by dual, unidirectional channels, are used to send data packets including routing address information during a succession of routing cycles from transmitting ones to receiving ones of a large number of parallel processors (e.g., 4096 processors arranged in a hierarchy of 8 cabinets, each of which contains a cluster of 8 circuit boards, with each circuit board containing a cluster of 64 processors). Each of the nodes includes a storage buffer having a capacity equal to a given number which is one more than the total number of channels terminating at that node. This routing process guarantees prevention of deadlock between levels and buffer overflow, and offers high-speed, low-cost interprocessor communication for SIMD computers.Type: GrantFiled: May 9, 1991Date of Patent: June 29, 1993Assignee: David Sarnoff Research Center, Inc.Inventors: Sue-Kyoung Lee, Danny Chin

Patent number: 5211532Abstract: An arrangement for applying a back pressure to a shaft seal of a mechanism such as a pump comprises a piston slidable in a cylinder one end of which communicates with the fluid being pumped and the other end of which contains oil communicating with a sealed chamber on that side of the seal remote from the fluid. Hitherto, the piston has created a preponderance of the back pressure over the pressure of the fluid by virtue of its weight. This preponderance has been very small, and the rolling diaphragm seal needed on the piston has been easily ruptured if the oil has been lost, thereby allowing possibly hazardous fluids to escape. A greater preponderance of the back pressure, allowing the use of a stronger type of piston seal, is provided by urging the piston towards the other end of the cylinder by a spring as well as by the pressure of the fluid.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 1992Date of Patent: May 18, 1993Assignee: David Brown Engineering LimitedInventor: Peter Thompson

Patent number: 5198606Abstract: The present invention is an apparatus for installing primers in ammunition shells, comprising a primer holder having walls defining a pocket opening to an upper surface of the holder for receiving a primer. The pocket has a diameter slightly smaller than the diameter of a primer so that there is an interference fit between the pocket and the primer sufficient to prevent the primer from being inadvertently dislodged from the holder during shipment, handling or use of the holder. The holder has a hole extending from a bottom of the pocket to a bottom surface of the holder for receiving a pin which pushes the primer out of the pocket and directly into a shell in response to relative movement between the holder and the pin. The holder preferably is disk shaped and has a plurality of pockets. The invention further comprises a shell reloading machine which utilizes the new primer feed system.Type: GrantFiled: April 1, 1992Date of Patent: March 30, 1993Assignee: David J. Patent number: 5192838Abstract: This invention includes crash sensors designed to be used for frontal impact sensing and the strategies of using these sensors. It is analyzed and shown that velocity sensing or damped sensors are desirable for frontal impact sensing. Inertially damped sensors, with a damping force proportional to the square to velocity, is most appropriate. Such sensors can be made of plastic and in the shape of short round or rectangular cylinders. The particular shape the these sensors minimizes the chance that the sensors will be rotated during the crash. It is further concluded that these sensors should be installed on the frontal radiator structure or at such similar location near the front of the vehicle. A typical crash sensor includes a hinged plastic mass attached to the housing. The mass activates a contact assembly after a predetermined movement of the mass. The gap existing between the movable mass and the interior wall of the housing enhances the damping function of the crash sensor.Type: GrantFiled: February 15, 1990Date of Patent: March 9, 1993Assignee: David S. Patent number: 5189463Abstract: The invention includes a camera that receives light from a field of view, produces signals representative of the received light, and intermittently reads the signals to create a photographic image. The intermittent reading results in intermissions between readings. The invention also includes a radiant energy source that works with the camera. The radiant energy source produces a beam of radiant energy and projects the beam during intermissions between readings. The beam produces a light pattern on an object within or near the camera's field of view, thereby identifying at least a part of the field of view. The radiant energy source is often a laser and the radiant energy beam is often a laser beam. A detection mechanism that detects the intermissions and produces a signal that causes the radiant energy source to project the radiant energy beam. The detection mechanism is typically an electrical circuit including a retriggerable multivibrator or other functionally similar component.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 1992Date of Patent: February 23, 1993Assignee: David G.
