  • Publication number: 20020180258
Abstract: An improved hydraulically assisted braking and steering system of a vehicle having a hydraulic pump communicating with a hydraulic steering assist device and including a hydraulic brake assist device coupled in series between the pump and the steering assist device includes the provision of a flow splitter which operates to reduce the interdependence of the hydraulic brake and steering assist devices on the flow of fluid from the pump. The flow splitter communicates with the outlet of the pump and the inlet of the brake assist device and is operative when the back pressure from the brake assist device exceeds a predetermined control value to divert a fraction of the flow of fluid around the brake assist device directly to the steering assist device, thereby providing sufficient flow to operate both the brake and steering assist devices within their normal design limits, rather than having the brake assist device starve the steering assist device when under heavy load.

  • Patent number: 6489761
Abstract: An analog angle encoder includes a non-magnetic stator which is cup-shaped, having a central post carrying at least one magnetosensitive device, and further including a rotor in the form of a ring captured by the stator, the rotor carrying at least one permanent magnet, wherein the rotor is rotatable relative to the stator. As the rotor rotates relative to the stator, the angle of the incident magnetic field changes relative to the magnetosensitive device, thereby causing the output from the device to vary sinusoidally with angular position. It is preferred to use magnetic configurations other than simple six sided magnets in order to achieve a more uniform magnetic field at the magnetosensitive device, as for example by utilizing cylindrical magnets, arcuate (concave faced) magnets, flat ferromagnetic layer pole pieces, arcuate (concave faced) ferromagnetic layer pole pieces, and ferromagnetic return paths.

  • Publication number: 20020175017
Abstract: A vehicle steering system includes a steering wheel and a steering shaft coupled between the steering wheel and wheels of the vehicle. The shaft is operable for rotating when the steering wheel is turned to thereby turn the vehicle wheels. A vibration damping system for absorbing vibrations in the steering wheel and shaft includes a rotor coupled to the steering shaft to rotate with the shaft and a case surrounding the rotor and a clutch surface proximate the rotor. A magnetic circuit generates a magnetic flux in the rotor. The rotor is operable to engage the clutch surface and thereby vibrationally couple the steering shaft to the case to absorb vibrations in the shaft, and when a magnetic flux is generated therein, to disengage the clutch surface so that the steering shaft may more freely rotate.

  • Patent number: 6486656
Abstract: A galvanomagnetic position sensor (36, 18) wherein a single die MR sensor (22, 22′) senses the rotation of an end face (14) of a motor shaft (12) which is made of a ferromagnetic material and generates three sinusoidal voltage signals with 120 degree phase shifts. In a first implementation, an MR die incorporating a plurality of matched pie-shaped MR elements (MR1, MR2, MR3, MR4, MR5, MR6) collectively form a circular area. When the motor shaft rotates, a tooth (18) of the end face sweeps past the MR elements resulting in resistance modulation of each MR element between a maximum resistance and a minimum resistance whereby three sinusoidal voltage signals spaced 120 degrees apart are provided, via OpAmps (AMP1, AMP2, AMP3) or voltage dividers and OpAmps (AMP1′, AMP2′). From these voltage signals the shaft rotative position is known.

  • Patent number: 6485318
Abstract: An electrical shuttle connector is capable of being used in high electrical power applications without incurring contact erosion upon the primary electrical contact location with a male pin. A shuttle which receives the male pin is contained by and slides axially within a receptacle of the connector between a mated position and a disengaged position and through an unmated position. An arcing contact face of the receptacle and a leading arcing contact surface of the shuttle incurs any high voltage electrical arcing when mating or un-mating the electrical shuttle connector. As such, when un-mating, the arcing contact face and the leading arcing contact surface disconnect prior to the electrical disconnection of the shuttle from the male pin. When mating the connector, the shuttle establishes electrical continuity with the male pin prior to the electrical engagement of the arcing contact face with the leading arcing contact surface.

  • Patent number: 6485187
Abstract: A wheel bearing assembly for supporting a wheel is provided. The assembly includes a spindle defining a rotational axis and a support member for supporting the spindle. A wheel hub has a flange for securing the wheel thereto. The wheel hub is supported on the spindle and is rotatable about the rotational axis. A bearing assembly has first and second bearing members in spaced relationship from one another with a plurality of bearings interposed between the bearing members to permit relative rotation between the bearing members about the rotational axis. The first bearing member is arranged adjacent to the spindle and the second bearing member is arranged adjacent to either the wheel hub or the support member. An inner surface of the first bearing member has an annular counterbore. The spindle is deformed into the counterbore to axially secure the first bearing member to the spindle and prevent relative rotation between the spindle and the first bearing member about the rotational axis.

  • Patent number: 6486764
Abstract: A rotary position sensor featuring a robust and simply constructed magnetic field assembly which provides a uniform magnetic field in the working air gap for a conventional mangetosensitive device located thereinside. The magnetic field assembly includes a plastic casing having a blind hollow, magnet pocket located at the blind end of the hollow, and a pair of diametrically opposed pole piece pockets oriented in upstanding relation to the magnet pocket. A permanent magnet is snapped into the magnet pocket, and a pole piece is respectively snapped into each of the pole piece pockets. The pole pieces may be rectangular or arc shaped, wherein the space therebetween forms the working air gap into which the magentosensitive device is placed. The magnetic field established in the working air gap is transverse to the axis of the blind hollow, and is generally uniform.

  • Patent number: 6484705
Abstract: A flow modifier for insertion into the chamber of a large pintle valve to change the apparent flow range of the valve to that of a smaller valve. The flow modifier includes a perforated cup-shaped restrictor disposed within the valve on the valve pintle and sealingly surrounding the valve seat such that all flow through the valve must pass through the passageways in the restrictor. The restrictor is held in place by a compression spring surrounding the pintle. The total open area of the passageways may be varied by varying their number and/or size and is preferably substantially less than the open area of the valve seat. The restrictor thus acts as a flow choke or fixed throttle to reduce the flow range of the valve. Different restrictors may be provided as required to size a single large valve having a large inherent flow range to a plurality of applications requiring valves having smaller flow ranges.
