Abstract: A fuel accumulator is provided to assist restarting a direct injection engine fuel system. The fuel accumulator includes a central guide post with a fuel passage. A cup shaped plunger with a closed end is slideably disposed on the central guide post. A seal means is disposed between the plunger and the central guide post to define a substantially sealed fuel chamber. A biasing means is provided to urge the plunger onto the central guide post. A fuel admission valve selectively prevents and permits fuel from entering and exiting the fuel accumulator. When a fuel system stop is commanded, pressurized fuel is admitted into the fuel chamber, thereby compressing the biasing means which maintains a restart pressure. When a fuel system start is commanded, pressurized fuel is expelled from the fuel accumulator.

  • Publication number: 20110248973
Abstract: A current-driven display device includes sub-pixel drive circuits with integral photo-sensitive circuits that modify the respective sub-pixel drive currents as a function of the locally sensed ambient light level. The photo-sensitive circuit may include a photo-transistor or photo-resistor connected in the output circuit of a drive transistor used to control the on-off state of a respective sub-pixel element, or the photo-sensitive circuit may include a photo-resistor that adjusts a control voltage or current supplied to an input circuit of the drive transistor. In any event, the photo-sensitive circuits individually and independently adjust the drive current, and hence the luminance, of each sub-pixel element based on the locally sensed ambient light level to locally and dynamically compensate for changes in ambient light impinging on the display device.

  • Patent number: 8035503
Abstract: A vehicle location reminder system having a vehicle positioning system operable to provide an approximate location of a vehicle and record the approximate location of the vehicle. A status check system monitors use of the vehicle and sends a signal to the vehicle positioning system to record the approximate location of the vehicle when the vehicle is no longer in use. A memory system is connected to the status check system and the vehicle positioning system, the memory system being adapted to determine if the approximate location of the vehicle, when no longer in use, is in a familiar location. An alert system is connected to the memory system. The alert system prompts a vehicle user to record data on a mobile device pertaining to the approximate location of the vehicle when the location of the vehicle, when no longer in use, is not in a familiar location. A replay system is adapted to replay the recorded data.

  • Patent number: 8034499
Abstract: An energy conversion system comprising ammonia for fueling an SOFC stack to generate electricity and a hydrogen-rich tailgas. In the SOFC stack, ammonia is cracked to hydrogen and nitrogen. Ammonia is stored in a metal halide complex and is released therefrom as gaseous ammonia by waste heat from the SOFC. A heat exchanger is positioned across the SOFC cathode such that incoming air is tempered by the cathode exhaust air. In a two-stage energy conversion system, the hydrogen-rich tailgas from the SOFC is supplied as fuel to a secondary energy conversion device which may be, for example, an internal combustion engine or a gas turbine engine which may operate, for example, either a generator for generating additional electricity or a vehicle for motive power, or a second fuel cell stack.

  • Patent number: 8033019
Abstract: A lower manifold for a V-style internal combustion engine comprising at least three shells: a top shell for mating with an upper manifold; a left shell for mating with a left engine head; and a right shell for mating with a right engine head. The three shells are formed independently by injection molding and are joined as by vibration welding when aligned in a welding jig. The molds for the left and right shells are formed such that the seal ring groove has a rectangular cross-section having sidewalls perpendicular to the lower shell surface because each left and right shell has its own draft angle preferably perpendicular to its lower shell surface. The method and apparatus of the invention permits runner cross-sections to be significantly rounded, which improves air flow characteristics of the runners.

  • Patent number: 8033257
Abstract: A vane-type camshaft phaser including a bias spring to urge the rotor toward an intermediate locking position from any rotational position retarded of the locking position. The rotor comprises non-coaxially acting primary and secondary locking pins for mating with primary and secondary locking pin seats in the phaser stator. The primary seat is elongated and is readily located by the primary locking pin to provide a first limit to the rotor phase angle authority in the retard direction. Camshaft torque reversals cause the rotor phase angle to dither. With each torque reversal the secondary locking pin passes over its seat, allowing multiple opportunities for re-engagement. The clearance of the secondary locking pin to its seat defines the rotary lash in the phaser.

  • Patent number: 8035976
Abstract: A lightweight radio/CD player for vehicular application is virtually “fastenerless” and includes a case and frontal interface formed of polymer based material that is molded to provide details to accept audio devices such as playback mechanisms (if desired) and radio receivers, as well as the circuit boards required for electrical control and display. The case and frontal interface are of composite structure, including an insert molded electrically conductive wire mesh screen that has been pre-formed to contour with the molding operation. The wire mesh provides EMC, RFI, BCI and ESD shielding and grounding of the circuit boards via exposed wire mesh pads and adjacent ground clips. The PCB architecture is bifurcated into a first board carrying common circuit components in a surface mount configuration suitable for high volume production, and a second board carrying application specific circuit components in a wave soldered stick mount configuration.

  • Publication number: 20110244297
Abstract: A prismatic-cell battery pack is provided with integral coolant passages and a distributed array of coolant channels coupled between an intake plenum and a pair of exhaust plenums. Coolant medium forced into the intake plenum draws heat away from the battery cells, and then exits via the exhaust plenum for expulsion of heat into the atmosphere. The battery pack is configured as a set of stackable interlocking battery cell modules including at least one battery cell in thermal proximity to an array of coolant channels distributed over the profile of the battery cell, and a pair of peripheral chambers joined to opposite ends of the coolant channels to form the intake and exhaust plenums when the modules are arranged and interlocked in a lineal stack. The entry end of each channel is closer to a centerline of the battery cell than the exit end of the channel.

  • Publication number: 20110241895
Abstract: An object detection system, controller, and method using sub-sampling for detecting a presence of an object at the location. An electrode arranged near the location radiates an electric field that corresponds to an electrode signal that arises in response to an excitation signal. When the excitation signal is coupled to the electrode and the electric field is radiated, the electrode exhibits an electrode impedance indicative of the presence of an object. The presence of an object is detected by analyzing the electrode signal using sub-sampling. Traditionally, such electrode signals have frequencies, high enough to warrant the use of expensive high-frequency signal processing devices. Sub-sampling is a way of sampling and processing the electrode signal such that the signal processing to detect the object can be performed by a lower cost general purpose microprocessor.
