  • Patent number: 5455161
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for assessing clinical activity and resistance to multiple anticancer drugs of mammalian cells, based on a dose-dependent inhibition with cytotoxic agents of the cellular rise in ornithine decarboxylase activity, following serum stimulation, which comprises the steps of: (a) determining by an immunological technique the rise in the ornithine decarboxylase protein levels, after adding serum containing medium to quiescent mammalian cells, and (b) obtaining the levels of the anticancer drug resistance from the ratio of 50% inhibitory concentration of ornithine decarboxylase obtained with an anticancer drug for drug resistant cells and drug sensitive cells. The immunological technique is selected from ELISA, radioimmunoassay, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy. The increase in the ornithine decarboxylase activity results from an increase in the number of ornithine decarboxylase molecules.

  • Patent number: 5420628
Abstract: The measurement of gray scale or color composition integrated densities of irregularly shaped areas of a subject specimen is accomplished by using a video camera to derive an analog video image signal representative of the optical intensity of light associated with the specimen. A modified low cost high speed video digitizer converts the video image signal into a digital format which an interactive computer program converts into digital optical density values that are used to determine the net integrated density of each irregularly shaped area within the specimen.

  • Patent number: 5365185
Abstract: A method and apparatus for producing a frequency-controlled loop in a phase-diversity receiver for demodulating received ON-OFF-keyed (OOK) and phase shift keying (PSK) signals, by feeding a reference frequency signal and the received signals to a quadrature mixer (QM) which produces two output signals in phase quadrature at nominally zero intermediate frequency. Quadrature continuous wave signals void of the modulation are produced from the phase quadrature output signals. A voltage proportional to the frequency of the quadrature continuous wave signals is generated and is utilized for controlling the frequency of the generated reference frequency signal.

  • Patent number: 5274092
Abstract: Novel discogens based on tricycloquinazoline derivatives and methods for their preparation are described. One method for their preparation is to nitrate veratraldehyde and after reducing the resulting nitrate to dimethoxy anthranil to obtain its trimerization thus producing a trisubstituted tricycloquinazoline. Another method is to start with dichlorotoluene and after its nitration to oxidize the nitrate into dichloronitrodiacetoxytoluene, its hydrolysis into benzaldehyde followed by a partial reduction to anthranil and finally by the trimerization of the anthranil to obtain the hexachlorotricycloquinazoline. The novel compounds are useful as fluorescent indicators for high performance oxygen sensors, organic conductors, liquid crystals and polymeric liquid crystals.

  • Patent number: 5251818
Abstract: Spraying equipment for plants growing in parallel rows comprises a main horizontal air duct and several secondary ducts extending therefrom in downward direction between the rows of plants. Each duct is provided with air outlets directed towards the plants, which are alternately opened and closed by valves so as to eject the air in pulses. One spray nozzle each is positioned in the center of each air outlet serving to eject into the pulsating air stream a jet of spraying fluid which is thereby carried onto the plants covering these from top to bottom. The equipment is attached to the front or rear of a tractor which carries a supply of spraying fluid and a pump serving to supply the material to each nozzle through piping. A blower is positioned in the main duct supplying air under pressure to the secondary ducts and to the air outlets.

  • Patent number: 5237287
Abstract: A method and apparatus are described for demodulating a modulated signal having a carrier component and a data component, in which the modulated signal is split into at least two parts one of which is delayed with respect to the other, and the two parts are multiply-coupled and linearly-combined to produce a combined output corresponding to a function of the data component independent of the carrier component frequency. In the described method and apparatus the undelayed part is coupled with the delayed part in a multiport coupler, wherein the parts are relatively phase-shifted to produce a plurality of phase-shifted signals; and the phase-shifted signals are linearly combined such that the data component, in the function of the combined output, is not affected by variations in frequency or phase of the carrier component. This enables a robust direct-detection DPSK receiver.
