  • Patent number: 6182814
Abstract: An in line feed method and apparatus for forming slugs of incoming items, which are standing on edge and aligned front-to-back is disclosed. The process uses a conveyor belt and a vacuum chamber aligned end to end for separating the flow of items and creating slugs. The items introduced to the system are on a conveyor belt. The belt is periodically stopped and the items blocked from being sucked into the vacuum chamber. While the product is blocked from entering the vacuum chamber a moving finger which travels through the chamber is introduced at the mouth of the vacuum chamber and the items are released from the conveyor belt such that they are sucked into the vacuum chamber but are limited by and stack up against the finger. In this manner slugs are formed.

  • Patent number: 6181070
Abstract: The present invention is a method for cooling a lamp backlighting module of a liquid crystal display. A preferred method of the present invention begins by providing a predetermined power input to a lamp. As power is provided to the lamp, the temperature of the lamp is monitored. When the temperature of the lamp rises to a first predetermined temperature, one or more fans are turned on which are adapted to dissipate the heat generated by the lamp. After the fan(s) cool the lamp to a second, lower predetermined temperature, the fan(s) are turned off. By using a fan to dissipate heat generated by a lamp backlighting module, the present invention may maintain the temperature of the lamp within a desired range. As a result, the present invention preferably increases the reliability and performance of the liquid crystal display.

  • Patent number: 6176526
Abstract: This disclosure relates to an expansion joint to connect two or more concentric bodies that are heated/cooled to different temperatures for the passage of liquid or gases. When the connecting portion is at an angle not in plane with the concentric bodies, the design allows for the gravity drainage of fluids and slurries from one connecting body to another without pooling or damming.

  • Patent number: 6174536
Abstract: A cosmetic product is provided for removing keratotic skin plugs. The product includes a flexible non-occlusive substrate sheet onto which a composition containing an anionic or nonionic polymer is deposited. The composition is treated to become dry non-tacky to the touch yet upon being wetted for use the composition again turns tacky and mobile. The method of application involves either directly moistening the product or indirectly moistening by first wetting a consumer's face in an area where the product is applied. Thereafter, water is allowed to evaporate leaving a film to which the keratotic plugs are bonded. The film is then peeled away concommittingly removing the plugs.

  • Patent number: 6174845
Abstract: The present invention relates to bar compositions in which an emollient composition comprising thickened entrapped emollient is added to a base bar composition at or during time of extrusion to form macroscopic, concentrated domains of emollient droplets. Addition of entrapped droplets allows far greater deposition than if the non-trapped emollients had been mixed in directly to form chips which are then extruded to form final bar.

  • Patent number: 6171637
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for preparing good quality low fat spreads (20-60%) more preferably in the range of 20-45% or 20-40% fat. This is achieved by the use of non gelling hydrocolloids to provide higher viscosity to the aqueous phase, however at a concentration which results in a water continuous emulsion. The emulsifier levels and types are chosen to result in a water continuous emulsion in the tank, while resulting in a fat continuous spread once hot inverted prior to cooling.

  • Patent number: 6168853
Abstract: The invention provides molded, extruded or formed phosphorescent plastic articles having laser marked indicia and methods for preparing the articles. The indicia may be seen as a contrast against a phosphorescent background or, alternatively, the indicia may themselves be phosphorescent. An article of the invention has a composition comprising about 50% to about 99% by weight of a thermoplastic or thermosetting resin, about 1% to about 50% by weight of a phosphorescent phosphor pigment and about 0.001% to about 1% by weight of a laser energy absorbing additive. Resin compositions which themselves are laser energy absorbing do not require the additive; however, the addition of small quantities of the laser energy additive enhances the quality and contrast of the laser mark.
