Abstract: Products and methods relating to composite materials and their use in coiled tubing is disclosed. The composite tubing is a pressurized structure for conveying fluids downhole in a wellbore. It has a multilayered laminate that resists buckling within the wellbore and is fabricated into a hollow tube. The fibers are oriented in angular relationship to the longitudinal direction of the coiled tubing such as to provide appropriate strength and buckling characteristics to the coiled tubing. Further, the coiled tubing layered laminate may transmit signals representing data from downhole to the surface. In some embodiments, a composite disconnecting structure having a blend of fibers of different types or orientations is shown. The disconnecting structure shows a failure load range corresponding to the failure characteristics of the fiber blend, the fiber blend having a predetermined failure limit.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for stacking newspapers is disclosed which obviates the need to fasten individual stacks. Once ejected from a stacking device, stacks of newspapers pass through an assembly station where they are arranged into groups of three, called slugs, and compressed. The slug then enters a collector where a layer consisting of four slugs is positioned on a sliding table. This positioning requires lateral movement of slugs. Lateral support is provided throughout this movement to prevent the stacks from toppling over. Once a full layer has been accumulated, the sliding table is retracted, and the layer of newspapers falls onto a floating table below. This floating table, which serves as the bottom floor of the container in which it is housed, is automatically lowered by discrete amounts as layers are received. Extendible cylinders located below the collector vertically move the floating table.

Abstract: Electrochemical machining (ECM) techniques utilizing real-time parameter monitoring, alarms and feedback control for improved machining of a workpiece are disclosed. The ECM device utilizes one or more cathodes, an electrolyte and a positively charged workpiece to achieve electrolytic action. A number of controlling variables, such as cathode feed rate, electrolyte flow rate and voltage, are balanced in response to measured system parameters. The following parameters are preferably monitored in order to adjust the controlling variables: the drive parameters of feed rate and cathode depth; the pump parameters of flow rate and pressure; and the power components of voltage and current. The flow rate in each of the cathodes, or a corresponding Reynolds number, is preferably utilized to provide an alarm to the operator if a statistically significant change in flow is detected.

Abstract: This invention concerns a method of altering the colour characteristics of a tea composition, including treating a tea infusion that contains cold water soluble tea solids but is substantially free of cold water insoluble tea solids, with an oxidising agent in a reaction vessel at a temperature and pressure in excess of the ambient temperature and pressure.
Abstract: The present invention relates to personal wash bar compositions comprising hydrophobic, low viscosity (less than 1000 cp) emollient agents which have been specifically pre-thickened with defined polymer composition. Use of the specific thickeners allow incorporation of the low viscosity oil (viscosity less than 1000 cp) in the personal wash compositions to deliver enhanced skin benefits and desired user properties without compromising foaming and bar processing.

Abstract: A method for fabricating, and a resulting structure for, a seamless, reusable and collapsible mandrel suitable for forming a plurality of seamless and hollow fiber wound vessels upon is disclosed. A destructible mandrel is used to form the seamless reusable mandrel. The destructible mandrel is preferably formed from a material which can be destroyed by dissolving, for example, materials such as foam or plaster. The seamless, collapsible, and reusable mandrel includes a plurality of different layers including a gas impermeable layer, a continuous fiber wound layer, and a release surface forming the outermost layer of the seamless, collapsible, and reusable mandrel. The resulting seamless, reusable and collapsible mandrel has advantages over mandrels which include a seam. Such advantages include a longer useful life and consistently high quality fiber wound vessels at a relatively low cost.
Abstract: Fluorometric immunological assay method for detection of HIV-1 infection in which Murine anti-gp120 monoclonal antibodies coupled to paramagnetic microspheres (14) and Fluorescein conjugated anti-gp120 polyclonal antibodies IgG (16) are incubated in a few drops of whole blood diluted in 0.5 cc phosphate buffered saline (10). After incubation for 5 minutes, the HIV-infected peripheral blood lymphocytes (18) will be coated with both the Murine anti-gp120 monoclonal antibodies coupled to paramagnetic microspheres (14) and Fluorescein conjugated anti-gp120 polyclonal antibodies IgG (16) at exposed gp120 antigens (20) binding sites. At the time of measurement said HIV- infected peripheral blood lymphocytes (18) will be pulled against the wall of the measurement vessel by means of a magnetic gradient (26). The cells adhering to the vessel wall are illuminated at 488 nm monochromatic light by a focused light source (28) and the resultant emitted fluorescence is imaged, measured and recorded.
Abstract: A fiberoptic velocity transducer for use in determining the rotational speed of an object and comprising a magneto-optic material coated with a dielectric material that operates to selectively pass light energy having a first range of wavelengths, and to reflect light energy having a second range of wavelengths, so as to make the light energy with the second range of wavelengths available as a reference signal, the magneto-optic material functioning to cause a Faraday rotation in the light energy having the first range of wavelengths that is characteristic of the speed of the rotating object.
Abstract: An optical isolator and circular polarizer are used in combination to optically isolate specular and diffuse reflections which result when a forward traveling radiation beam encounters an optical or non-optical boundary surface. The forward traveling radiation beam is linearly polarized with a linear polarizer such that its plane of linear polarization is aligned with a first polarization axis, then the axis of linear polarization is rotated to a second polarization axis with a polarization rotator and finally the linearly polarized forward traveling beam is circularly polarized with a quarter wave retarder.
Abstract: A pneumatic isostatic forging process for densification of near net shape workpieces is disclosed. In the process, a workpiece is heated prior to the forging process, such as from a previous processing step. The workpiece is loaded into a pressure vessel. The pressure in the vessel is ramped to an operating pressure and held for approximately 10-120 seconds. The vessel is pressurized using rapid pressurization to achieve a high strain rate to assist in the final closure of voids within the workpiece, with the increase in the strain rate lowering the flow stress requirements for the workpiece, thereby making the workpiece more susceptible to plastic deformation.
