  • Patent number: 5863316
Abstract: A recirculating fume scrubber system in which fume is evolved from an aqueous bath in a process vessel, such as an HCl pickling tank, and the evolved fume is scrubbed with water and then the scrubbed gas is divided into two portions, one of which is released to a stack vented to atmosphere and the other portion is recirculated to the scrubber.

  • Patent number: 5861376
Abstract: A peptide (QSP-9124) was synthesized corresponding to the 34 residue sequence of a peptide precursor to the bacteriocin LL-2 produced by Lactococcus lactis LLA-2.0. The precursor to native bacteriocin LL-2 is extensively modified by post-translational mechanisms. Serine and threonine residues are dehydrated and lanthionine and methyl-lanthionine sulfur bridges are formed between cysteine and several of the dehydrated serine and threonine residues. The synthesized peptide has greater anti-bacterial action against Listeria monocytogenes, than did the native, post-translationally modified protein LL-2. Antibacterial activity against several beneficial food lactobacterial strains was absent, so that the peptide is of value as a food preservative against L. monocytogenes.

  • Patent number: 5860473
Abstract: A climate control system having a control means for receiving cool call signals and heat call signals from a plurality of thermostats. The control means blocking action by conflicting calls when the system is in a heat mode or cool mode. The system also preventing a single zone from dominating the mode of the control system and allow a conflicting call to be received after the control system has been in a particular mode for a maximum period or the conflicting call has been waiting for longer than a maximum period. The control system also properly adjusting the dampers to allow purging of ducts after heating and cooling mode and to allow zone or system ventilation upon request.

  • Patent number: 5858939
Abstract: A method of enhancing deposition of benefit agent from bars which method comprises separately preparing an adjuvant composition comprising benefit agent and deposition polymer (e.g., cationic polymer); and base bar composition comprising a surfactant system, wherein the adjuvant composition is initially prepared by mixing components forming the adjuvant composition and water to form a uniform aqueous mixture containing benefit agents having particle size of 0.1 .mu.m to 100 .mu.m and drying said aqueous mixture to form a dried adjuvant composition. By combining adjuvant compositions separately from the base bar composition, it is possible to create a final bar having enhanced deposition of benefit agent without compromising processing or consumer attributes (e.g., foaming).

  • Patent number: 5858251
Abstract: A method of concentrating waterborne pathogenic organisms from water potentially contaminated by dilute densities of the organisms is described. Potentially contaminated water is directed along an elongated flow path which rests generally within a plane perpendicular to an axis of rotation, and is subjected to centrifugal forces by rotating the flow path about the rotational axis. The method may be executed by use of a conventional continuous flow channel-type blood plasmapheresis centrifuge. The method has been tested for its capability for recovering pathogenic protozoan parasites such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia from contaminated water, and recovery rates of up to 100% have been observed.

  • Patent number: 5857784
Abstract: A method for detecting image position errors, includes forming a first pattern with a symbol embedded therein and a second pattern which, when superpositioned on the first pattern, exposes the symbol if the misalignment between the first and second patterns exceeds a position error tolerance. The symbol is perceivable with the unaided eye even if the misalignment is imperceivable to the unaided eye.

  • Patent number: 5856810
Abstract: Multi-beam antenna feed networks employ more aperture ports (e.g., ports I, II, III, IV and V) than beam ports (e.g., ports A, B, C and D) to achieve low sidelobe lossless operation, particularly for cellular communications. With five aperture ports, signal value outputs at the aperture ports represent orthogonal outputs having phase gradients effective to provide a four beam radiation pattern. The feed arrangement includes directional couplers (e.g., C11, C21) and phase shifters (e.g., P22, P23) intercoupled between the beam ports and aperture ports to provide the desired orthogonal aperture excitation. An example of specific directional coupler and phase shifter circuit values for a matrix network for a four beam port to five aperture port feed network configuration is provided.
