Abstract: Cosmetic skin conditioning compositions containing a salicyloxo .alpha.-carboxy acid. The inventive compositions provide control of sebum secretion from sebocytes, improved oil control and improved skin feel, prevent shine and stickiness, while also providing anti-aging benefits which results in reduced appearance of wrinkles and aged skin, improved skin color, treatment of photoaged skin, improvement in skin's radiance and clarity and finish, and an overall healthy and youthful appearance of the skin.

Abstract: Certain cyclic aliphatic unsaturated compounds which sufficiently inhibit LRAT or ARAT catalyzed esterification of retinol into inactive retinyl esters, have the same effect on keratinocytes as retinoic acid. Thus, effects of the retinol or retinyl esters in combination with these cyclic compounds are analogous to treatment with retinoic acid.

Abstract: The invention relates to a device and a method for the identification of fluorescing follicles that can be follicular impactions and/or microcomedones (clinically non-evident acne lesions), and/or comedones (clinically evident acne lesions) and/or bacteria on the face or other skin surface area. The inventive device allows the detection of both types of follicular fluorescence (yellow/green and orange/red). For safety reasons, to prevent skin burns and erythema, the filter on the ultraviolet light source removes substantially all the harmful UVB radiation (280-320 nm wavelength range). The filter used in conjunction with the detection means removes reflected and scattered light emanating from the subject's skin surface, thus increasing the sensitivity and discretion of the technique and making fluorescence detection easier and clearer.

Abstract: A dual-chamber composite pressure vessel includes a first enclosure formed of a fiber reinforced resin matrix, having a hollow cylindrical central section, and first and second oblate end sections formed integrally over respective ends of the central section to define a first chamber. Also included is a second enclosure formed of a fiber-reinforced resin matrix, integrally with the first enclosure, and having a second hollow cylindrical section which is joined at one end to and extends from the second end section co-cylindrically with the central section of the first enclosure. The second enclosure also includes a third oblate end section formed integrally over the other end of the second cylindrical section to define a second chamber.
Abstract: A hydraulic vibration damper includes a noise-reducing valve structure that isolates the region of cavitation away from the metal structures forming the pressure cylinder, the piston and valve structures. The improved design includes a sharper rebound land edge angle forming a boundary near the valve exit, enlarging the region of working fluid adjacent the valve structure exit within which implosions can take place. This design also dispenses with the use of a skirt around the perimeter of the piston, and removes contact between the piston and the pressure cylinder. A support piston provides contact with the interior surface of the pressure cylinder. These features distance the region of cavitation from metal surfaces of the piston and valve structures, thereby significantly reducing the transmission throughout the vibration damper of noise and vibration caused by implosions within the working fluid.

Abstract: The present invention relates to liquid detergent compositions comprising anionic/amphoteric surfactant systems. Addition of specific EO-PO copolymers wherein ratio of anionic to EO-PO polymer is defined has been found to remarkably enhance mildness. In a second embodiment, the invention relates to a method for enhancing mildness in liquid detergent compositions comprising anionic surfactant by adding said defined EO-PO polymers.

Abstract: There is provided a high precision device for measuring the color of non-self-luminous or self-luminous objects having interchangeable optical geometries for conversion from one optical geometry to another. The device interchanges a plurality of modules, each having at least one optical geometry for directing illumination from an illumination source and for collecting sample light reflected from a measured object or sample. Such optical geometries include a 45/0 geometry, sphere geometry, specular included geometry, and specular excluded geometry. Each module is removably attached to the device when measurement of the color of the sample is desired and may be separated from the device when measurement of the color of the sample is not desired. Also, each module may include removable filters for absorbing certain types of light, such as ultraviolet visible light, and blocking elements to determine the source of any reference signal.
Abstract: A method for construction of a scaleable font database comprised of data stored in a compact form for retrieval in one of several usable forms common in digital typography. The method comprises the steps, for each text character of a font collection of: generating a digital representation of the character and identifying it with respect to character code and typeface design, determining segment endpoints and associations within a model of the character, measuring actual dimensions for the associations, and determining segment descriptors for each contour segment comprising the complete outline of the character.
