    Abstract: A coke car is traversed along a battery of coke ovens and receives hot coke discharged through a fall space in an overlying smoke collector hood. The car is moved slowly only a short distance along the battery during the coke pushing operation while it is loaded wih coke at one end of the car and progresses slowly to the other end thereof. Horizontal end sealing plates are fitted to the car and the hood at the level of the top edges of the end walls on each side of the car and hood. The total of the length of the two sealing plates is not less than the distance traveled by the car during coke pushing. Gaps are left between the bottom edges of the side walls of the smoke hood or extension plates disposed thereon and the sealing plates on the coke car. The gaps allow entry of air into the hood for uniform extraction of the emissions formed during the coke pushing operation. In addition, gaps of equal width can also be left between the top edges of the longitudinal walls of the car and hood.

    Abstract: A smoke collecting hood traversable on the oven platform along a coke oven battery covers the space in which the pushed coke cake drops into a quenching car while parked in front of the oven chamber. A distributor is suspended from the roof of the hood. The distributor includes metal sheets receding from a central vertical edge facing the oven. The sheets widen outwardly toward the bottom. A linkage is mounted on the distributor at the side remote from the oven to extend through the outer wall of the hood. Outside the hood, a drive is coupled to the linkage to pivot the distributor member about a horizontal axis. The distributor is vertically positioned at the start of the pushing operation so that its vertical front edge cuts through the coke cake and the coke slides down the sides of the distributor into the front and rear parts of the quenching car.

    Abstract: A gas conduit control system for a coking oven provides for sequential operation of a conduit cover and a seal on a transition element which communicates between the conduit and a gas collection main conduit. The system includes two pivotally connected shafts and two bell crank levers wherein the cover element is connected to one bell crank lever and the seal is connected to the other bell crank lever. One bell crank lever is slotted to permit linear movement of a first shaft without accompanying movement of the associated bell crank lever. The other bell crank lever is pinned to a lengthwise slot in a second shaft to permit lengthwise movement of the second shaft without accompanying movement of that bell crank lever. A hydraulic piston is an element of the first shaft which operates the system by extension and retraction.

    Abstract: Burner tubes for coke oven heating flues and method and apparatus for inserting and/or removing the same from burner nozzles. The burner tubes themselves can be inserted or removed from burner nozzles permanently installed in the sole of a heating flue and comprise thin-walled alumina elements provided with external fins adapted to engage the top edges of the burner nozzles. The apparatus for inserting and removing the tubes comprises two pivotally-connected rods, the lower of which is adapted to carry either a fixture which can insert a burner tube into a burner nozzle or a fixture which can remove a burner tube. In either case, the fixture is such that it can be engaged with, or disengaged from, a burner tube by manipulation of the uppermost pivotally-connected rod without manual contact with the tube in the heating flue itself.

    Abstract: Brickwork near the outer ends of horizontal coke ovens which forms vertical heating flues in heating walls is renewed by a method wherein the oven chambers at opposite sides of the heating wall are partitioned by vertical walls. These vertical walls are located at a point inwardly in the oven chambers so that a vertical cut can be made through the oven wall of the innermost heating flue to be repaired. The brickwork in front of the vertical cut is then pulled down. New parts for the oven wall are connected to existing parts by oven bricks which have a lug that is arranged when installed so that the lug extends along the heating flue side to engage over existing oven bricks.

    Abstract: An ignition burner and a pilot burner form part of an ignition system for a fluidized stream of finely-divided coal particles in a pressurized gasifier housing having a slag overflow pipe coupled to a discharge vessel. A fuel supply pipe delivers fuel for combustion by the ignition burner and the pilot burner. A sparkplug or hot wire is used to ignite the fuel delivered to the ignition burner. The flame produced by the ignition burner is widened by a baffle so that ignition by the pilot burner occurs to produce a flame which is monitored through a thermocouple. The parts forming the ignition system are carried by a pair of levers with pivots on the inner wall of a slag overflow pipe for movement between an operative position wherein the ignition burner is situated near the slag-receiving opening of the overflow pipe and an inoperative position wherein the ignition burner is protected from contact by slag and radiation heating.

    Abstract: Coke is dry cooled in a shaft-like cooler by gases conveyed through the coke. The cooler comprises a top antechamber below a charging opening, a cooling chamber under the antechamber and having a gas inlet and a coke outlet at the bottom end. Between the antechamber and the cooling chamber, there is a cylindrical wall having a gas inlet. The cooling chamber is divided by radial walls which abut a central masonry core and divide the chamber into three shaft-like chambers to insure uniform descending of the coke. A prop is placed at the center of each component shaft for deflecting the descending coke from a central region. Cooling gas is supplied through a pipe having a downwardly-directed opening below a central masonry core. Additional cooling gas is supplied by an annular chamber surrounding a cone at a coke outlet of the cooling chamber.

    Abstract: A coating compound for silica bricks, particularly silica bricks intended for use in the construction of pitch coke ovens, where it is necessary to protect the bricks against penetration of liquid and gaseous substances and impede the formation of graphite incrustations. The bricks are coated with a suspension of water-glass powder and glass powder together with a stabilizer such as hydroxyethyl cellulose in a concentrated water solution. After being coated with the suspension, the bricks are dried and baked to produce a substantially sealed and smooth surface.

Reciprocation of the actuating rod in one direction or the other will open or close all flaps essentially simultaneously to rapidly change the quantity of combustion-supporting air supplied to the regenerator, depending upon whether lean or rich gas is being used.

    Abstract: Thin-walled corundum tubes form smooth and pore-free surfaces for supplying non-preheated gas to the burners in heating flues between coking chambers of a coke oven. Silica blocks forming a burner in the heating flues have an enlarged opening to receive the tube so that the tube projects a short distance from the top of the burner and extends therealong below the floor of the heating flue. The tube is made of corundum or similar refractory material to prevent the accretion of carbon which precipitates at a high temperature from the rich gas.

    Abstract: A coke side gantry car for a battery of coke ovens supports an extractor and a cleaner for the door, a door frame cleaner, a coke guide grating and a hood for collecting emissions during coke pushing operations. At least one of a plurality of rails to support the gantry car is disposed on the coke platform and another of the rails is disposed outwardly therefrom above and generally parallel with tracks for a hot coke car. A coke guide grating in a casing with continuous side walls moves axially of the oven chamber between the chamber opening and an outward position where a substantial part of the weight is carried by the outer track for the gantry car. The casing extends around the grating and covers the side walls thereof. The casing cooperates with members to form a seal with the coke oven chamber and the smoke hood.

    Abstract: An improved sulfur-ammonia process for removing hydrogen sulfide from coke oven gases. In the improved process, a concentrator formerly used for standby operation is used at all normal times as an ammonia scrubber to improve the efficiency of gas separation during normal operation and is used as a concentrator for its intended standby functions during the alternative operations. In its normal function, the concentrator/scrubber functions as a scrubber to strip ammonia gas from recirculating liquid streams and to permit introduction of an ammonia-rich gas into a hydrogen sulfide scrubber to increase the separation efficiency of that unit. In the standby operation, the same concentrator/scrubber serves as a concentrator to concentrate hydrogen sulfide in a "strong liquor" stream for separate recovery as a "strong liquor.

    Abstract: Continuous dry quenching of coke is carried out with an inert gas circulated through hot coke in a vertical chamber and through a heat exchanger. The vertical chamber comprises a top prechamber below a charging opening and a quenching chamber which is below the prechamber. The quenching chamber has a bottom gas entry and a bottom coke discharge. A gas exit between the prechamber and the quenching chamber supplies gas to the heat exchanger. A gas entry and/or a gas exit communicating with the top of the prechamber is used to control the flow of gas so that the temperature of the gas removed from the vertical chamber remains constant during quenching operations when there is a disturbance to the flow of coke.

    Abstract: An apparatus for granulation of precipitation products, comprising a liquid-filled reaction chamber including a granulation chamber which receives aqueous streams of compounds which precipitate to form granules. The granulation chamber has an open upper edge connected to the narrow edge of a conical surface. The upper open edge of the conical surface merges with an apron which is spaced inwardly from the inner periphery of the reaction chamber. Conduit means conduct granules downwardly from the granulation chamber. Liquid and fine granules rise upwardly within the conical surface. Granules descend back into the granulating chamber. Clean liquid passes downwardly through the annular space between the apron and the reaction chamber for removal from the space between the conical surface and the apron.

    Abstract: A gas-transfer tube assembly is used to extract charging gases through an orifice in the roof of one coke oven chamber and discharge the gases into an adjacent second coke oven chamber through an orifice in the roof thereof. Each orifice has a riser with an annular water seal normally closed by a removable cover. The gas-transfer tube assembly includes downwardly-extending tubular end portions with elbow parts that are selectively connected together by a straight mid-section used to change the spacing between the downwardly-extending end portions. The gas-transfer tube assembly is supported for vertical movement on a car that runs along a monorail supported by buckstays. The car is stabilized by rollers at the top of the car to engage a rail.

The coke car includes a generally square box-like container having side walls sealed with a floor that is pivoted about a horizontal axis to bear against seal members. The horizontal axis is spaced from the wall of the car adjacent the coke bench by a distance less than the distance between the axis and the wall of the car adjacent the oven platform. The seal members are disposed on the top of part of the floor which moves away from a side wall during pivotal movement and seal members are disposed on the bottom of a floor part which moves upwardly along a wall of the container during pivotal movement.

    Abstract: Regenerative changeover of a coke oven battery is designed for operation according to a method wherein each regenerative half period is broken down into a time when gas is supplied at a constant pressure to the burners in heating flues and a time when no gas is supplied. A final control facility acts on the regenerative changeover facility to enable the regenerative half period to be broken down into these two time periods. A controller is responsive to variations in gas properties, such as the calorific value, density, humidity and temperature, to bring about operation of the final control element so that the heating time and the pause in every regenerative half period have values such that the heat supplied to the battery in each half period remains constant.

    Abstract: Washing fluid is distributed in a scrubber or a stripper to treat a countercurrent gaseous or vaporous stream by spigots receiving fluid from a tray for discharge onto spray pipes underneath a nozzle at the end of the spigot. A casing surrounds the spigot in a concentrically-spaced relation to a point where slots in the spigot discharge fluid onto a spray plate carried on the lower end of the spigot above the nozzle. The spray plate on the spigot includes a base section with a slotted edge section having some of the slotted portions bent upwardly and others bent downwardly while others are completely removed. The base section supports downwardly-extending fingers that extend into space. A frame carried by the casing supports an upper and smaller spray plate above a lower and larger spray plate all beneath the nozzle in the spigot. The upper and lower spray plates each have upwardly- and downwardly-bent edge portions carried by a base plate.
