Abstract: Disclosed herein are novel electrophoretic displays and materials useful in fabricating such displays. In particular, novel encapsulated displays are disclosed. Particles encapsulated therein are dispersed within a suspending, or electrophoretic, fluid. This fluid may be a mixture of two or more fluids or may be a single fluid. The displays may further comprise particles dispersed in a suspending fluid, wherein the particles contain a liquid. In either case, the suspending fluid may have a density or refractive index substantially matched to that of the particles dispersed therein. Finally, also disclosed herein are electro-osmotic displays. These displays comprise at least one capsule containing either a cellulosic or gel-like internal phase and a liquid phase, or containing two or more immiscible fluids. Application of electric fields to any of the electrophoretic displays described herein affects an optical property of the display.

Abstract: The present invention provides for a joined optical fiber subassembly having first, second and third sections. The first section has a plurality of separate optical fibers with each optical fiber having a core and cladding. The second section, which adjoins the first section, has the optical fibers joined so that a single cladding encloses the cores of the optical fibers. The third section, which adjoins the second section, has the single cladding enclosing the cores of the optical fibers. With the joined optical fiber subassembly as a constituent element, a subunit which can be used in many fiberoptic devices can be created.

Abstract: A system and method for remote postage metering of postage indicia, including demanding a desired postage amount and subsequently printing the postage indicia onto a piece of mail. A user inputs certain necessary information, as well as additional desired information, into a local processor-based system. The local system then assembles a postage demand in suitable format and transmits the same to a remote postage metering device. The remote postage metering device then verifies the demand for authority to demand and valid funding. Upon verification, the remote postage meter assembles a data packet representing an authorized postage indicia. The data packet is transmitted to the local system for printing. Printing of the postage indicia may be unaccompanied, or may include additional information. Such additional information may include destination and return address, machine readable routing or identification information, or a complete document to be posted.
Abstract: A temperature control unit for independent control of a number of independent channels, as can exist with a cluster tool used for semiconductor fabrication, has high efficiency, long term life and reliability, and requires only a small floor area. To these ends, the unit employs a single high capacity refrigeration system and disposes a number of separate temperature control channels for the individual tools, with only some channels receiving refrigerant. Low temperature channels use high pressure, sub-cooled refrigerant for chilling the heat transfer fluid to selected levels controlled by proportional valves adjusting refrigerant flow through evaporator heat exchanger units which cool heat transfer fluid. Moderate temperature channels cool the heat transfer fluid for associated tools to an ambient temperature level.
Abstract: A method for separating a mixture of hexamethylenediamine, aminocapronitile and polarographically reducible impurities using fractional distillation in which the temperature in the rectifying zone of a distillation column varies sigmoidally along its length to force a major portion of the PRI to co-distill with the aminocapronitrile.
Abstract: This invention concerns fluorine-modified perfluorinated ion-exchange microcomposites, comprising a perfluorinated ion-exchange polymer containing pendant sulphonic acid groups and/or carboxylic acid groups, entrapped within and highly dispersed throughout a network of inorganic oxide, said network having a plurality of fluoride groups bonded thereto; processes for their preparation and their use as catalysts in chemical processes such as alkylation of aromatic compounds.
Abstract: This invention relates to an isolated nucleic acid fragment encoding a transcription coactivator. The invention also relates to the construction of a chimeric gene encoding all or a portion of the transcription coactivator, in sense or antisense orientation, wherein expression of the chimeric gene results in production of altered levels of the transcription coactivator in a transformed host cell.

Abstract: The contact arrangement is a connector block for detachably fastening an electrical component, particularly an integrated circuit having a plurality of terminal contacts disposed in a ball grid array (BGA), in a column grid array (CGA), in a land grid array (LGA) or of the flip-chip type to a printed circuit board. In a support part, a number of contact pins are disposed in a grid in bores. The contact pins project from the bore on the side facing the printed circuit board and are surface-mounted together with contact areas of the printed circuit board. A free end region of each bore is intended for guiding the substantially dome-shaped terminal contacts. Between the end of a contact pin and a terminal contact there is a space bridged for establishing an electrical connection with a contact element, for example an axially compressible coil spring. By means of several holding-down elements disposed peripherally to the integrated circuit, the integrated circuit is pressed down upon the support part.
Abstract: The isolator core having a walk-off crystal, a non-reciprocal rotator coupled to the walk-off crystal, and a reciprocal rotator coupled to the walk-off crystal.
Abstract: An improved process for producing highly pure aromatic carboxylic acid from an impure solid acid product whereby the solid acid product is efficiently dissolved in a suitable solvent at relatively low temperatures despite the presence of solid lumps.
Abstract: The process for the recovery of highly fluorinated carboxylic acids from off-gas streams, in which the off-gas is brought into contact with an alkaline washing solution of density >1.15 g/cm3 so that the salt of the highly fluorinated carboxylic acid settles out as a separate phase, proceeds particularly advantageously when the alkaline washing solution is a potassium carbonate solution.
