  • Patent number: 5943694
Abstract: Armor, in particular body armor for female wearers is made of multiple layers (30) of penetration-resistant material for example made of polyaramid fibers, specially shaped to fit over a shaped area to be protected, e.g. the bust of a female wearer. The armor's shaped part is held in shape by a series of darts (37) in successive layers (30) of the material. Each dart in a material layer comprises a generally V-shaped section (35) whose edges (37) are joined to form the dart. The V-shaped section (35) of the material is folded on itself to form a pleat (40) which is folded over to one side of the dart (37) to form an added thickness overlaying or underlying an adjacent part of the material (30). The darts (37) are angularly offset from one another with the pleats (40) oriented in directions so that the added thickness is distributed substantially evenly, thereby avoiding bulges or stiffness and improving the wearing comfort.

  • Patent number: 5946314
Abstract: The capacity of switching elements, for instance 8.times.8 elements, is expanded, to originate single-stage elements with greater capacity (16.times.16 or 32.times.32), by arranging an even plurality of such elements in an output substage and by placing upstream of the output substage at least a first input substage comprising a corresponding even plurality of the switching elements. The even and, respectively, the odd outputs of the elements of the input substage are connected in an orderly manner to the inputs of the switching elements of the output substage. • Patent number: 5943006
Abstract: Special mathematical techniques are used to process accurate energy measurements in the focal plane of a high quality imaging system to produce high resolution images. The improved resolution exceeds the generally accepted Rayleigh limits. That is accomplished by adapting Fourier transform techniques and using both in-phase and quadrature or amplitude and phase components to recover the target scene. The measurement of the in-phase and quadrature or amplitude and phase components are taken in the focal plane and undergo parallel processing to preserve both amplitude and phase in the resulting image. A Fourier transform of the aperture characteristics is removed from a Fourier transform of the energy components to result in a Fourier transform of the image. The scene is recovered by taking an inverse Fourier transform of the result.

  • Patent number: 5941086
Abstract: A thermal expansion valve unit comprises a closed vapor system, which includes a temperature sensing chamber in thermal communication with a source such as a two phase refrigerant, and a pressure chamber with a deformable member, the position of which controls the size of an expansion orifice. A line confining a selected vapor, which optionally may be a refrigerant, communicates between the interiors of the temperature sensing chamber and the pressure chamber. A heater, separately controllable, is thermally coupled to the temperature sensing chamber such that the selected refrigerant may be independently heated to change the pressure in the chamber. A thickness of insulating material is disposed between the temperature sensing chamber and the source to limit thermal energy loss to refrigerated elements in the system.

  • Patent number: 5942406
Abstract: Compositions and methods for avidin immobilized on an inert support material, e.g., agarose, are disclosed. The compositions have high activity levels of avidin and may further include a bulking agent, e.g., maltose, and a protectant to maintain the stability and integrity of the avidin agarose during lyophilization and terminal sterilization processes. A dry composition, and wet compositions such as a gel, slurry or suspension having avidin immobilized on an inert support material are disclosed. The dry composition has at least 1000 biotin binding units of activity, and the wet compositions have at least 50 units of binding activity. These compositions have applicability in any instance where avidin agarose and/or the avidin/biotin technology are useful. • Patent number: 5942649
Abstract: Method for thermally decomposing addition polymers, such as polyolefins, into monomers and monomer fragments. Thermal decomposition occurs by the rapid heating of the addition polymer such that the polymer ceiling temperature is reached in a time period substantially equal to the thermal relaxation time of the polymer itself. Laser ablation, wherein the polymer is heated by very rapid nanosecond or microsecond pulses of ultraviolet or infrared laser beams, and flash pyrolysis are particularly useful techniques for accomplishing such rapid heating.
