Abstract: This invention relates to an improved method for making composite structures by dispersing a high tenacity fiber such as aramid in a polymeric matrix to form a premix, combining the premix with a natural fiber such as wood flour and extruding the resulting mixture through a fiber alignment plate and die such that the fibers are substantially aligned in the flow direction of the extrudate.
Abstract: There is provided an organic light-emitting diode luminaire. The luminaire includes a patterned first electrode, a second electrode, and a light-emitting layer therebetween. The light-emitting layer includes a first plurality of pixels having an emission color that is blue; a second plurality of pixels having an emission color that is green, the second plurality of pixels being laterally spaced from the first plurality of pixels; and a third plurality of pixels having an emission color that is red-orange, the third plurality of pixels being laterally spaced from the first and second pluralities of pixels. The additive mixing of all the emitted colors results in an overall emission of white light.

Abstract: A CCD Device of the type for providing charge gain by impact ionisation has a multiplication register. Gain provided by a subset of the elements of the multiplication register are independently controllable from other elements in the register. This enables the register to be used in one setting with the same gain applied to all elements and a different setting with a subset of elements arranged to provide a different gain. By comparing the two signals, the gain provided by each element and the register as a whole may be derived.
Abstract: Methods for the microbial production of para-hydroxycinnamic acid (pHCA) and cinnamic acid (CA) are provided. Microbes producing either tyrosine or phenylalanine are grown in the presence of either tyrosine ammonium lyase or phenylalanine ammonium lyase respectively where some part of the fermentation is accomplished at alkaline pH. The process results in greater yields and higher rates of para-hydroxycinnamic acid (pHCA) and cinnamic acid (CA) production as compared with fermentation exclusively at physiological pH.

Abstract: The present application relates to the fabrication of an electronic component. The component comprises two, superposed integrated circuits: one of which is formed on the front side of a thinned first substrate, and the other of which is produced on the front side of a second substrate, with an insulating planarization layer interposed between the front sides of the two substrates. The silicon of the backside of the thinned substrate is opened locally above a first conducting area located in the thinned substrate and above a second conducting area located in the second substrate. A conducting layer portion, deposited on both areas, electrically connects them so as to provide the interconnection between the two circuits. The external connection pads may also be formed in this conducting layer.
Abstract: Described herein are methods of manufacturing an electrode and emitter in a field emission device, and devices formed from the methods. Compositions useful for the manufacture of an electrode and emitter in a field emission device are also described.

Abstract: In a radio communication system, at least a first frequency band is subdivided into C radio resource units which are allocable for radio transmissions between radio stations and terminals. Each radio resource unit has at least two adjacent subcarriers, for allocation of at least a first resource unit for a data transmission between a terminal and a radio station. The radio station receives from the terminal a first short training symbol which has spectrally the same bandwidth as the first frequency band and includes at least Q frequency carriers, where Q is greater or equal to C, but smaller than the total number of subcarriers. The radio station estimates the radio channel for at least the first radio resource unit using the first short training symbol, and an allocation of the first radio resource unit to the terminal is broadcasted by the radio station.

Method and apparatus are provided in which a good mold filling during casting is achieved in addition to high cooling rates. The method includes introducing a metal-containing melt into an electrically conducting casting mold, the metal-containing melt and the mold being connected in an electrically conducting manner to the outputs of the same voltage source during the introduction into a casting mold, so that a preset current flows through the boundary interface between the melt and the mold. Apparatus is also provided in which there is an electrically conducting connection to a voltage source between a metal-containing melt and an electrically conducting mold for the melt.
