Abstract: The auxiliary breathing flow channel apparatus for an oxygen mask for pilots and crew of an airplane includes a flow control device with closed and open positions to regulate flow through an auxiliary channel. A pressure sensor such as an aneroid capsule automatically closes the auxiliary channel upon a decrease in cabin pressure. A handle also allows a user to manually move the flow regulating means to a closed position.

Abstract: A photodetector arrangement with a photoreceiver which comprises a photodiode, a blocking capacitor for high frequency and a terminal resistance lying at the signal output of the photodiode, is suggested. The photodiode is connected to a first bias connection for the supply with a blocking voltage, and a second bias connection is connected to the terminal resistance for the control of the potential at the signal output. A further blocking capacitor is provided for the high-frequency-technological earthing of the terminal resistance.

Abstract: The present disclosure pertains to a process for preparing a laminate comprising: providing a dried overlay and a base sheet wherein at least one of the dried overlay and the base sheet comprises a resin-impregnated, opaque, cellulose pulp-based sheet; applying a fluorourethane to the dried overlay to form a treated overlay; drying the treated overlay; and laminating the treated overlay to the base sheet. The disclosed process hereby produces a laminate whose outer surface is modified with the fluorourethane and the cleanability, oil repellency, and abrasion resistance of such a laminate is improved.
Abstract: An apparatus and method for attenuating the sound generated by a fan powered terminal unit or other equipment in an HVAC (heating, ventilating, and air conditioning) system is described. The apparatus utilizes internal geometry to minimize noise due to air disturbances and aerodynamic effects within the apparatus. Specifically, a silencer is described comprising a casing having an inlet and an outlet; a condensate deflector positioned at the inlet to the casing; at least one baffle being operable to attenuate noise in a gas flowing through the silencer; and an air pathway through the silencer, defined by positions of the condensate deflector and the at least one baffle within the casing. The air pathway is angled or curved to substantially minimize the line-of-sight pathway from the inlet to the outlet.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for reducing a selected tonal noise generated by a fan operating in a non-uniform flow by locating at least one obstruction in the non-uniform flow such that the at least one obstruction generates a noise that is out of phase with the selected tonal noise. The noise generated by the at least one obstruction interferes with the selected tonal noise, thus reducing the selected tonal noise. It is also contemplated to use additional obstructions to reduce other tonal noises generated by the fan.

Abstract: Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) induces sequence-specific post-transcriptional gene silencing in many organisms by a process known as RNA interference (RNAi). Using a Drosophila in vitro system, we demonstrate that 19-23 nt short RNA fragments are the sequence-specific mediators of RNAi. The short interfering RNAs (siRNAs) are generated by an RNase III-like processing reaction from long dsRNA. Chemically synthesized siRNA duplexes with overhanging 3? ends mediate efficient target RNA cleavage in the lysate, and the cleavage site is located near the center of the region spanned by the guiding siRNA. Furthermore, we provide evidence that the direction of dsRNA processing determines whether sense or antisense target RNA can be cleaved by the produced siRNP complex.

Abstract: Fluorinated ethers of aromatic acids are produced from halogenated aromatic acids in a reaction mixture containing a copper (I) or copper (II) source and an amino acid ligand that coordinates to copper. The fluorinated ethers of aromatic acids made using the process described herein can be applied to, e.g., fibers, yarns, carpets, garments, films, molded parts, paper and cardboard, stone, and tile to impart soil, water and oil resistance. By incorporating the fluorinated ethers of aromatic acids, or diesters thereof, into polymer backbones, more lasting soil, water and oil resistance, as well as improved flame retardance, can be achieved.

Abstract: A sealing device for a rotating furnace and cooler for calcination of oil coke has lead plates mounted in sliding form on individual supports attached to a flange which constitutes the fixed part of the furnace or cooler. The plates are aligned side by side, forming a collar of coplanar plates encircling the external diameter of the furnace or cooler, forming a self-adjustable sealing curtain between the joint point of its rotating and fixed parts, while the cylindrical body presents a track against which all plates are handled and held with a certain pressure, maintaining the sealing between the rotating and fixed part of the set, both in the furnace and in the cooler.
