Abstract: A process for producing a low-attenuation optical fiber by producing a soot core preform by chemical deposition on a substrate; removing the substrate from the soot core preform, thereby forming a central hole along the soot preform; drying and consolidating the soot core preform in a consolidation furnace to form a glass core preform; heating the glass preform in the consolidation furnace above a glass melting temperature to produce a reduction of the diameter of the central hole; and stretching the glass core preform to completely close the central hole.

Abstract: An acetyl xylan esterase variant having perhydrolytic activity is provided for producing peroxycarboxylic acids from carboxylic acid esters and a source of peroxygen. More specifically, a Thermotoga maritima acetyl xylan esterase gene was modified using error-prone PCR and site-directed mutagenesis to create an enzyme catalyst characterized by an increase in the ratio of peracetic acid formation to peracetic acid hydrolysis specific activities (PAAF/PAAH ratio). The variant acetyl xylan esterase may be used to produce peroxycarboxylic acids suitable for use in a variety of applications such as cleaning, disinfecting, sanitizing, bleaching, wood pulp processing, and paper pulp processing applications.

Abstract: The invention relates to a locking device for linear actuators, in particular for fluid-actuated adjusting devices, with a piston rod mounted in an axially displaceable manner relative to a receiving device. The object of the invention is to provide a locking device for linear actuators, with which a secure locking is possible over the entire travel path of the linear actuators. This is attained in that the piston rod has a hollow space extending in the axial direction, in which form-fitting devices are arranged distributed in the axial direction, that form-fitting elements corresponding to the form-fitting devices are arranged in the piston rod in a radially displaceable manner, which elements are mounted in an axially stationary manner relative to the receiving device, and that an actuating device that displaces the form-fitting elements radially is assigned to the form-fitting elements.

Abstract: Compositions and methods for protecting a plant from an insect pest are provided. In particular, nucleic acid sequences encoding insect protoxins modified to comprise at least one proteolytic activation site that is sensitive to a plant protease or an insect gut protease are provided. Cleavage of the modified protoxin at the proteolytic activation site by a protease produces an active insect toxin. Methods of using the modified insect protoxin nucleic acid sequences and the polypeptides they encode to protect a plant from an insect pest are provided. Particular embodiments of the invention further provide modified insect protoxin compositions and formulations, expression cassettes, and transformed plants, plant cells, and seeds.

Abstract: A printer operates under a first set of conditions to create a first set of M of samples and under a target set of conditions to create a second set of K samples. Each sample is produced using the same colorant(s). The actual spectral reflectance for each sample is measured. The actual reflectances for corresponding samples in the first and second sets are used to create a cross-validated, partial-least-squares transform that maps a reflectance from a sample produced under the first set of conditions to a reflectance from a sample produced under the target set of conditions. The transform and reflectances produce a set of predicted reflectances, each representing a sample producible under the target set of conditions using one colorant. The predicted reflectances and the colorant(s) are used to generate a table predicting a color value when the printer operates under the target set of conditions.
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for treating biomass composed of integrated feedstocks to produce fermentable sugars. One aspect of the methods described herein includes a pretreatment step wherein biomass is integrated with an alternative feedstream and the resulting integrated feedstock, at relatively high concentrations, is treated with a low concentration of ammonia relative to the dry weight of biomass. In another aspect, a high solids concentration of pretreated biomass is integrated with an alternative feedstream for saccharifiaction.

Abstract: There is provided a new process for forming a light-emitting diode device having first, second, and third subpixel areas. In the process a hole injection layer is applied over an anode layer. The hole injection material has a conductive polymer and a fluorinated acid polymer. A hole transport layer is applied over the hole injection layer. A first electroluminescent material which is either green or blue, is applied to the first subpixel areas. A second electroluminescent material which is either blue or green, is applied to the second subpixel areas. A red electroluminescent material is applied overall, followed by deposition of a cathode. The second electroluminescent material emits a color different from that of the first electroluminescent material.

Abstract: Non-aqueous, liquid coating compositions which contain at least one epoxy-functional polyurethane resin A and at least one carboxyl-functional cross-linking component B, wherein the at least one epoxy-functional polyurethane resin A is present as particles having a melting temperature of 40 to 180° C.
Abstract: An arrangement for controlling induction coils of an induction cooking hob so as to minimize noise production resulting from intermodulation of certain frequencies of operation. The induction coils are operated in two modes, with a first mode at the same frequency fg so to produce a low intermodulation or differential frequency, or at a second mode having a high differential frequency of about 18 kHz. Alternating back and forth between said modes of operation makes it possible to reach predefined average values for the power of the induction coils for a given time period, while at the same time minimizing development of disturbing noise.
