  • Publication number: 20050200283
Abstract: A linear electron beam tube comprises an electron gun having a cathode and a grid, and an anode arranged in a first portion of a drift tube. The drift tube is within a vacuum envelope and has first and second portions separated by a gap at which point an electron beam, density modulated with an input RF signal is inductively coupled to an output cavity. The vacuum envelope is partially defined by a cylindrical ceramic wall and a pair of ferromagnetic pole pieces at its ends that form a DC magnetic circuit. The pole pieces extend radially beyond the vacuum envelope. At least those parts of the surface of the pole pieces that are in the RF path are coated with a layer of relatively low RF loss material such as copper. A balance ring separates the ceramic from the pole pieces.

  • Publication number: 20050204337
Abstract: A highly portable user-friendly development environment is provided that can enable the creative design of custom electronic presentations. Users can design their own custom presentations and even their own custom approach for making software development a rational industrial process. The document-based authoring environment uses a standard word processing document, which is controlled by a wizard. The development of presentations can take place in the cells of an electronic table of the word processing document. This document-based authoring environment can expand the possibilities of e-learning course development beyond conventional database development environments.

  • Publication number: 20050199285
Abstract: An automatic shut-off valve suitable for watering of batteries is disclosed. The valve is formed by a chamber having an inlet and an outlet. A seat surrounds the outlet. A spring biased piston within the cylinder is movable into and out of sealing engagement with the seat to open and close the valve. A flow deflecting surface is positioned between the inlet and the piston. Water flow is directed around the piston to eliminate drag that would force the piston into engagement with the seat. A second deflector surface directs flow against the piston to bias it open. An actuator cup, fed by a nozzle extending from the outlet, draws the piston into engagement with the seat when the cup is sealed by engagement with the electrolyte surface. The valve may also employ a float actuator connected to the piston.

  • Patent number: 6943028
Abstract: A method for the facile and inexpensive inducible expression of heterologous genes has been discovered. The yhcS regulator gene has been found to be inducible by aromatic carboxylic acids and to alter the expression of operons in the LysR gene family, including the yhcRQP operon, common in enteric bacteria. Heterologous nucleic acid molecules placed under the control of yhcs responsive promoters may be overexpressed in response to the presence of inexpensive aromatic carboxylic acids.

  • Patent number: 6942803
Abstract: A process is disclosed for purifying an aqueous feed stream comprising a product organic acid, such as lactic acid, and a strong contaminant, such as pyruvic acid or oxalic acid. The molar concentration of the product organic acid in the feed stream typically is at least 20 times greater than the molar concentration of the strong contaminant. The aqueous feed stream is contacted with a first immiscible basic extractant that has at least a 3-fold greater affinity for the strong contaminant than for the product organic acid. The majority of the strong contaminant and some product organic acid become complexed with the first immiscible basic extractant. The complexed first immiscible basic extractant is separated from the aqueous stream, thereby producing a first effluent stream that comprises product organic acid and that has a greater ratio of molar product organic acid to molar strong contaminant than the aqueous feed stream did.

  • Patent number: 6943710
Abstract: A method and arrangement for arithmetic encoding/decoding is described, wherein the probability estimation is performed by a finite state machine FSM, wherein the generation of N representative states of the FSM is performed offline. Corresponding transition rules are filed in the form of tables. In addition, a pre-quantization of the interval width R to a number of K pre-defined quantization values is carried out. With suitable dimensioning of K and N, this allows the generation of a table containing all K×N combinations of pre-calculated product values R×PLPS for a multiplication-free determination of RLPS. Overall, the result is a good compromise between high coding efficiency and low calculation effort.

  • Patent number: 6944777
Abstract: A distributed access controller for controlling access to resources in a multi-domain distributed computing environment. The access controller is configured to receive a request from a user requesting performance of one or more operations on a particular resource. The access controller attempts to resolve the requested operations based on user hierarchy information and access list information for the particular resource. If all the operations in the user's request cannot be resolved based on the user hierarchy information and the access list information for the particular resource, the access controller then attempts to resolve the unresolved operations based on the particular user's user hierarchy information in combination with resource hierarchy information, and access list information for the resources in the resource hierarchy information.
