  • Patent number: 6959217
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a multi-mode crystal oscillator system selectively configurable to minimize power consumption or noise generation. Such a system is particularly applicable to the communication system of an implantable device, e.g., the microstimulator/sensor device described in U.S. Pat. Nos. 6,164,284 and 6,185,452. In such devices, their small size limits the size of the battery contained within and thus makes it essential to minimize power consumption. Additionally, the small size and battery capacity result in a limited transmission power. Furthermore, the small size limits the antenna efficiency which makes it desirable to limit any noise generation to maximize the signal-to-noise level of the resulting receive signal. Accordingly, embodiments of the present invention alternatively supply power to the oscillator in either a first mode that minimizes power consumption or a second mode that minimizes noise generation.

  • Patent number: 6958222
Abstract: A high growth methanotrophic bacterial strain capable of growth on a C1 carbon substrate has been isolated and characterized. The strain has the unique ability to utilize both methane and methanol as a sole carbon source and has been demonstrated to possess a functional Embden-Meyerhof carbon flux pathway. The possession of this pathway conveys an energetic advantage to the strain, making it particularly suitable as a production platform for the production of biomass from a C1 carbon source.

  • Publication number: 20050234007
Abstract: Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) induces sequence-specific post-transcriptional gene silencing in many organisms by a process known as RNA interference (RNAi). Using a Drosophila in vitro system, we demonstrate that 19-23 nt short RNA fragments are the sequence-specific mediators of RNAi. The short interfering RNAs (siRNAs) are generated by an RNase III-like processing reaction from long dsRNA. Chemically synthesized siRNA duplexes with overhanging 3? ends mediate efficient target RNA cleavage in the lysate, and the cleavage site is located near the center of the region spanned by the guiding siRNA. Furthermore, we provide evidence that the direction of dsRNA processing determines whether sense or antisense target RNA can be cleaved by the produced siRNP complex.

  • Publication number: 20050234262
Abstract: A production process for a catalyst that supports a noble metal, and an alkali metal compound and/or alkali earth metal compound, useful for synthesis of vinyl acetate is provided. The process includes (a) impregnating a carrier with an aqueous solution of a water soluble noble metal compound, and (b) converting the noble metal compound into a water insoluble noble metal compound, and the noble metal compound is reduced, followed by supporting an alkali metal compound and/or alkali earth metal compound. An element that oxidizes to produce an amphoteric oxide is brought into contact with the carrier at the step (a) and/or the step (b). This process is advantageous in facilities required and the associated running costs for production of an eggshell-type structure catalyst, which offers a high level of catalytic activity, and enables the production of vinyl acetate with a high space-time yield.

  • Publication number: 20050233207
Abstract: Disclosed is an electrolyte for a lithium-ion secondary battery comprising an additive to prevent swelling of the battery caused by a gas generated in the battery upon storage at a high temperature, thereby inhibiting destruction of the SEI layer. According to the present invention, there is provided an electrolyte for a lithium-ion battery using any one of LiCoO2, LiMn2O4, LiNiO2, or a composite compound (LiMxNyO2), wherein M and N are a metal element; and x and y are a rational number from 0 to 2, as an anodic active material, and crystalline or amorphous carbon or lithium as a cathodic active material, in which the electrolyte comprises: a mixed solvent comprising at least one carbonate type solvent; at least one lithium salt of LiPF6, LiBF4, LiClO4, LiN(SO2CF3)2 and LiN(SO2CF2CF3)2 as an electrolytic salt; and a mixed additive of 2-sulfobenzoic acid cyclic anhydride and divinyl sulfone.

  • Publication number: 20050229778
Abstract: A membrane separation process for the enrichment of at least one gas component in a gas flow, especially for the oxygen enrichment of the air and/or for the enrichment of carbon dioxide using a membrane separation device (10), which is a part of a membrane separation unit (2) and includes at least one membrane. The gas is separated into a retentate (8), which is discharged on the retentate side (12) of the membrane, and a permeate (9), which is discharged on the permeate side (11) of the membrane. To allow the separation of gases or the enrichment of a gas component in a gas flow at a low energy consumption rate and at low investment and production costs, the pressure of the gas stream is lowered before entering the membrane separation unit (2) so that pressure on the permeate side (11) is lower as compared with the inlet pressure.

  • Publication number: 20050229378
Abstract: Especially for increasing the process security and reliability of permanent connections between overlapping materials, a method is suggested for permanently joining overlapping plate-shaped parts, particularly metal sheets, by producing an undercut between the parts in a deforming manner, the method comprising the following steps: disposing the parts to be joined between a protrusion of a punch tool and a support area of a counter-tool, forming a temporary elevation on the side of the parts that faces the counter-tool, by pressing the punch protrusion into the parts to be joined against the support area at least until the parts rise from the support area outside the forming elevation, and forming an undercut in the parts by flattening the elevation between punch tool and counter-tool by the punch tool further approaching the counter-tool. Furthermore, a device is suggested for carrying out said method.

  • Patent number: 6957420
Abstract: A method is disclosed for testing applications that include non-deterministic behavior. The presently disclosed method generates test code for testing deterministic behavior of an application. When instances of non-deterministic behavior of the application being tested are encountered, the method provides acceptable alternate behaviors, such that the non-deterministic behavior can be effectively tested. The method may be implemented as a software test tool that utilizes a graphical programming interface to make the test generation simple and easy to use.
