Abstract: An amorphous aluminosilicate sol with uniform size particles and a porous amorphous aluminosilicate powder composition useful as a catalyst in petroleum cracking is prepared by a process comprising (1) preparing a sol of discrete colloidal particles of uniform size within the range of from 2 to 87 nanometers, the surface of the particles consisting of a coating of an aluminosilicate at least 0.5 nanometer in thickness, by separately and simultaneously adding a sol of silica or a solution of sodium or potassium silicate and a solution of sodium or potassium aluminate to a heel sol of uniform-sized colloidal particles of aluminosilicate, silica, or one or more refractory metal oxides at a certain rate of addition and at a constant pH in the range of 9 to 12 and a temperature of 50.degree. to 100.degree. C.
Abstract: Oligomers of aromatic diols and brominated diphenyl compounds are described. They are useful in resin blends with thermoplastic polymers to impart flame-retardancy thereto without substantial resin degradation at molding temperatures.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a machine for automatic packaging of food products in cup-shaped containers grouped in a row in a cardboard support. This machine comprises essentially a device for marking the support and its associated containers, as well as a device for bending down the sides of the support to a position substantially parallel with the axis of the containers. This latter device comprises essentially a vertically movable unit including two horizontal bars vertically movable with respect to the unit and capable of passing in the intervals between two successive plates supporting the containers so as to turn down the edges of the support.
Abstract: Air fireable nickel boride-based end termination compositions for multilayer capacitors are provided. The nickel boride compounds utilized are either (Ni.sub.3 B).sub.a (Ni.sub.3 Si).sub.b or Ni.sub.3 B.sub.1-x P.sub.x and the compositions also contain a glass whose component oxides have a redox potential of less than -0.5 volt. These compositions, upon firing, afford conductors such as end terminations in multilayer capacitors having excellent solderability and solder leach resistance, adhesion to dielectric substrates and electrical properties substantially equivalent to standard silver/palladium conductors.
Abstract: Process for preparation of positive images which comprises exposing imagewise a supported layer of a photosensitive composition comprising an alkali-soluble polymeric binder, at least one dihydropyridine compound and at least one hexaarylbiimidazole compound and developing by washing out the exposed image areas. Optionally auxiliary layers can be present between the support and photosensitive layer. The photosensitive elements are useful in preparing positive working printing plates and photoresists.

Abstract: The invention relates to a harvester of sugar cane or similar products which provides a significant reduction of moving parts and more efficient cleaning of the harvested product than was hitherto possible. This is accomplished by replacing the individual known components for cutting, elevating and cleaning of the cane by a single rotating mechanism provided with a single shaft of reversible rotation and which is fitted with displaceable knives and fixed throwing vanes or wings, which vanes are enclosed in a cylinder with a top outlet discharging the cane billets into a movable duct.

Abstract: A personal dosimeter for measuring the average concentration of a gaseous contaminant over a given period of time is provided. The dosimeter comprises a sealed pouch having a reaction chamber, which contains a gas-collecting medium, and at least one compartment. Each compartment can be separately sealed and can contain a different reagent, the seals being individually breakable such that the reagents can be separately released into the reaction chamber. Into the pouch is sealed a gas diffusion device that permits the contaminant to diffuse into the reaction chamber where it is collected in proportion to its ambient concentration.
Abstract: A conventional centrifuge refrigeration system is modified by connecting a capillary sized line between the expansion valve and the evaporator. This permits the expansion valve to be located at a point within the centrifuge remote from the rotor. This facilitates the easy removal of the expansion valve for repair and yet reduces icing of the expansion valve. Further, the system capacity may be improved by wrapping the capillary line about the suction line to effect subcooling of the refrigerant before it passes to the evaporator. This enhances system capacity.

Abstract: A process for preparing a furan compound by the catalytic oxidation of a diolefin such as butadiene or a halo-substituted alkene is provided. In this process, the starting material is contacted with an aqueous medium having a pH less than about 2 containing (1) iodide ion, (2) a mixture of cuprous and cupric ions, and (3) a solubilizing agent for cuprous ion such as an alkali metal halide. Optionally, an oxygen-containing gas such as air can also be contacted with the aqueous medium. In one embodiment, the starting material is contacted with an aqueous solution of the aforesaid ingredients in one reaction zone to prepare furan and a portion of the solution is passed to a second reaction zone where cuprous ion is oxidized to cupric ion with air and then the air-treated solution returned to the first reaction zone.
