Abstract: A halogenated alkene is reacted with HF in the presence of TaF.sub.5 or NbF.sub.5 to produce a fluorinated alkane. Exemplary is the reaction of tetrachloroethene with HF in the presence of TaF.sub.5 to produce 1,2,2-trichloro-1,1-difluoroethane and 1,1,2,2-tetrachloro-1-fluoroethane.
Abstract: An amorphous silica supported palladium catalyst is provided which also contains a small amount of an additive metal compound selected from an oxide, hydroxide and carbonate of zirconium, thorium, hafnium, cerium, titanium and aluminum. By use of particular preparation conditions and the amount of additive metal salt raw material used, the additive metal compound deposits from solution before or simultaneously with a palladium compound. The additive metal compound deposits on the silica support and serves as a base for the subsequently deposited palladium compound which is later reduced to palladium metal. The described catalyst is particularly suitable as a hydrogenation catalyst in a cyclic process for the manufacture of hydrogen peroxide.
Abstract: There have been proposed ultrasonic scanners in which a transducer is laterally scanned relative to a body known arrangements with lead screws for example can give rise to much vibration and have a high power requirement. It is proposed to scan with a linear motor drive. The scanning part including the transducer is put in an oil bath and the oil flow is balanced to act as a counterweight. The scanning part should, therefore, have neutral buoyancy, with the centers of gravity and buoyancy substantially coincident.

Abstract: The disclosure teaches a novel foundation clip assembly comprising a foundation clip having a web and two upturned ends integral with said web in combination with a sleeve means covering a central part of the web. Also, a novel method of constructing a foundation stem on a footing is taught which comprises the steps of providing foundation clips and sleeves; inserting the clips in the sleeves; positioning the clips and sleeves on the footing to receive concrete forms; inserting concrete forms in the clips; pouring the concrete in the forms; removing the forms when the concrete sets up; and finally removing said clips from said sleeves for further use.

Abstract: Apparatus for cutting a running web of paper or the like has a rotary disk-shaped first knife and a driven counterknife. The first knife is rotatable on a shaft which constitutes the piston rod of a double-acting pneumatic cylinder and piston unit. The cylinder of such unit is connected with a second piston rod forming part of a single-acting cylinder and piston unit. The control system for the two units includes a shutoff valve which can admit compressed air to the single-acting unit whereby the pressure in a first conduit which connects the source of compressed air with the single-acting unit rises when the second piston rod reaches an end position in which the marginal portion of the first knife overlaps but is remote from the marginal portion of the counterknife. A second conduit thereupon admits compressed air to the double-acting unit in order to move the first knife axially against the counterknife.
Abstract: Water, primary alcohols or secondary alcohols together with carbon monoxide can be added across ethylenic or acetylenic bonds in a wide variety of organic compounds to form acids or esters. The reaction is conducted in the presence of a catalyst system consisting of an organophosphorus palladium halide compound and certain metal halide compounds.
Abstract: An improved dosimeter having a low air flow rate for monitoring working areas in which air is pumped through the dosimeter at a controlled constant low rate of flow and any particles or vapors in the air are collected on a filter, a variable drive pump having an inlet and an outlet is connected to the filter and is driven by an electric motor and controlled by a feed back circuit of an integrator and an amplifier and the pump maintains a constant flow of air through the dosimeter; in operation of the dosimeter the integrator receives a signal from a pressure switch that detects changes in the flow of the air stream through the dosimeter by a change in a pressure drop of the air which is being pumped through an orifice; The improvement is the use of an adjustable by-pass valve connected in parallel with the variable drive pump in such a manner that regulated quantities of air from the outlet of the pump are recycled to the inlet of the pump thereby allowing the pump to provide a constant low flow rate of air;In

Abstract: N-(heterocyclicaminocarbonyl)arylsulfonamides in which at least one of the acyclic nitrogens thereof is substituted by lower alkyl, or sometimes in the case of aminocarbonyl nitrogen, by methoxy; e.g. N-[N-(4,6-dimethoxy-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)-N-methylaminocarbonyl]-2-chloroben zenesulfonamide or N-[N-(4,6-dimethoxy-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)-N-methylaminocarbonyl]-2-nitrobenz enesulfonamide; are useful for the regulation of plant growth and as general and selective herbicides.
Abstract: Apparatus for cutting paper sheets wherein a first knife, which is freely rotatable on a shaft, is movable sideways toward and away from a driven counterknife. The shaft is reciprocable in a carrier which is connected with one end of a reciprocable and turnable piston rod. The piston rod extends into a cylinder and is reciprocable by a spring and a membrane-like piston. The orientation of the first knife with respect to the counterknife can be changed by turning the piston rod with reference to the cylinder so that the piston rod can assume and is held in any one of several angular positions. To this end, the piston rod is rigidly connected with a radially extending projection which is disposed between two rollers mounted in the cylinder for movement at right angles to their axes. One of the rollers is biased against one side of the projection by a helical spring, and the other roller is movable at right angles to its axis by an adjusting screw which meshes with the cylinder.
