Abstract: A process for preparing a photographic emulsion having a controlled grain size, structure, and size distribution, wherein a silver salt and an alkali metal halide react to precipitate silver halide grains at uniform pAg using high velocity mixing jets directed vertically downward to accomplish rapid dilution of and mixing of reactants in a conventional paddle-agitated precipitation vessel. A single recycle loop, or double recycle loops, feeds the mixing jets.

Abstract: Tetrahydrofuran/alkylene oxide polymerizates containing no more than 3%, by weight, of oligomeric cyclic ethers are prepared by extracting the ethers from a raw polymerizate with water.
Abstract: Water-borne alkyds containing polybasic acids, a sulfonated aromatic acid, or equivalent, e.g., the sodium salt of 5-sulfoisophthalic acid, polyhydric alcohols, and fatty acids, are prepared in a two-step process by first reacting the carboxylic acids and the alcohols until a clear solution is obtained and then adding and reacting the fatty acid to achieve a desired relatively low acid number. These alkyd products are water dispersible without the need for amine stabilization and form protective films on substrates.
Abstract: An improved warp size for filament yarn is provided consisting essentially of polyvinyl alcohol, urea, and mono- and di-saccharides, such as sucrose, which when applied to filament yarn from aqueous solution provides excellent abrasion resistance, low shedding, freedom from skinning, and outstanding ease of removal.
Abstract: Vehicles useful for thick film resistors fireable in nonoxidizing atmosphere, which are based on copolymers of ethylene and vinyl acetate, are provided. Pastes based on such vehicles, hexaboride conductors, and nonreducible glasses have high viscosity, good printability, and have no carbonaceous residue upon firing.
Abstract: Polyfluorohydroxyisopropyl bicyclic and tricyclic carbostyrils, such as 2,3-dihydro-7-methyl-9-[2,2,2-trifluoro-1-hydroxy-1-(trifluoromethyl)ethyl ]-5H-pyrido[1,2,3-de]-1,4-benzoxazin-5-one, useful as antihypertensive agents.
Abstract: A modified dovetail joint interconnects a plywood web to a chord. The chord carries two grooves extending inwardly from the surface of the chord intersected by the web. The two grooves merge into a single, wider groove adjacent the surface of the chord, are separated by a wedge-shaped spacer, and are inclined relative to each other. The plywood web carries two flexible tongues along its edge portion that are sized to engage respective ones of the grooves in the chord. The tongues are composed, at least in part, of two of the veneer layers of the plywood and are spaced from each other by a web groove formed in an intervening layer of veneer. The inner terminus of the web groove as well as the terminus of the glue laminate between the tongue forming layers of veneer and the adjacent intervening layer both lie below the surface of the chord when the web and the chord are assembled.
Abstract: Penicillin V is prepared by culturing a penicillin-producing microorganism in a medium containing suitable sources of nitrogen, carbon and energy, and inorganic salts. One or more phenoxyalkanes of the formula ##STR1## wherein n is an integer from 6 to 13 are included within the medium as the sidechain precursor.
Abstract: Process for recovering carboxylic acids from dilute aqueous solutions of alkali metal salts of such carboxylic acids by mixing such solutions with from 10 to 1000% of a supercritical solution comprising at least 10 mole % carbon dioxide at a pressure from 80 to 500 atm and preferably 100 to 350 atm and at a temperature of from 35.degree. to 200.degree. C. and preferably from 35.degree. to 100.degree. C. whereby the salt reacts with the carbon dioxide to form the carboxylic acid which dissolves in the supercritical fluid. The aqueous phase is allowed to separate from the supercritical fluid phase. The pressure of the supercritical phase is lowered which lowers the solubility of the carboxylic acid in the supercritical fluid so that an acid phase is formed separate from the supercritical fluid phase whereby recovery of the acid is effected.
Abstract: Apparatus for accumulating discrete stacks of superimposed note books has a feeding conveyor which delivers note books seriatim into each of a battery of receptacles forming a row which extends transversely of the direction of feed of note books. Each receptacle has a composite bottom wall with two elongated horizontal carriers which are movable sideways toward and away from each other to constitute a platform for an oncoming note book in those positions in which they are closer to each other and to provide an opening for gravitational descent of a note book onto a stacking table therebelow in those positions in which they are more distant from each other. The carriers are parallel to the direction of feed of note books into the respective receptacles, one carrier of each bottom wall is connected to a first reciprocable support, and the other carrier of each bottom wall is connected to a second reciprocable support.
Abstract: A toy hovercraft apparatus and which includes a toy hovercraft and a launcher therefor. The hovercraft comprises a frame having an outwardly flaring skirt with a downwardly projecting peripheral lip to form an air chamber therebeneath. A motor, e.g., an electric motor, supported centrally of the skirt, rotates a fan located in an upper portion of the chamber to draw in air through inlets and create a pressurized air cushion in the chamber, which, in turn, causes the hovercraft to float or hover over a floor, or other surface. One or more relatively small rechargeable batteries are also carried on the frame and connected to the electric motor for powering the motor and the batteries may be periodically recharged. The hovercraft is preferably round and is constructed so that the weight is symetrically distributed which permits the torque created by the fan to cause rapid rotation of the hovercraft in a level horizontal plane without imparting horizontal motion to the hovercraft.
