  • Patent number: 4167872
Abstract: A data collection and reduction system for a shock suppressor valve test system is provided. The test system includes a flow meter for generating a DC voltage signal corresponding to the velocity of fluid flowing through the flow meter and a recorder for recording and outputting an AC voltage signal corresponding to the velocity of fluid flowing through the flow meter. The data collection and reduction system includes circuitry interconnected to the flow meter for amplifying the DC voltage signal generated by the flow meter to produce an amplified DC voltage signal. Circuitry converts the amplified DC voltage signal to an AC voltage signal for application to the recorder for recordation of the velocity of the fluid flowing through the flow meter. Circuitry is further provided and interconnected to the recorder for amplifying the AC voltage signal output by the recorder.

  • Patent number: 4167963
Abstract: Molten metal is fed to an ingot during solidification, in order to compensate for shrinkage and segregation, by electroslag remelting (ESR). The electrodes are positioned entirely in the slag and comprise an inner electrode surrounded by an outer electrode, so that current flow is substantially horizontal through the slag. Powdered solid slag can be filled in the space between the electrodes before ESR begins; and for this purpose, the lower end of the outer or surrounding electrode is temporarily closed by a metal sheet which melts when the current is turned on, thereby to release molten slag onto the bath at the top of the ingot. The electrode arrangement is useful both with consumable and with nonconsumable electrodes.

  • Patent number: 4168372
Abstract: A method for reducing the amount of free vinylidene chloride in an aqueous dispersion of a vinylidene chloride polymer by adding to the dispersion a small amount of a redox initiator, and then subjecting the dispersion to a temperature in the range of room temperature to about 40.degree. C. for a period of at least one hour. Substrates such as packaging films can be coated with the aqueous dispersion, or with a solvent solution of the polymer after separation from the dispersion. By use of such a coating bath, the amount of vinylidene chloride vapor in the atmosphere near the coating station is significantly less than the amount when using a coating bath of polymer not subjected to the method of the invention.

  • Patent number: 4166573
Abstract: A vertically oriented flexible centrifuge tube is placed in a rotor cavity or other enclosure, and the open end sealed with a tapered plug. The plug is formed with a peripheral groove in the tapered portion. A retaining disc, secured to the open end of the enclosure, wedges the plug into the open end of the flexible tube. The mouth of the enclosure is flared to accommodate the plug's taper. When the tube is centrifuged, the wall of the tube cold flows into the groove forming a locking seam such that the tube and plug are mechanically locked together and maintain an effective pressure seal.

  • Patent number: 4166952
Abstract: A method has been devised whereby material is removed from a solid surface and ionized to produce singly charged monatomic ions representative of the surface. A sample of the material (or surface) is mounted in place of the repeller electrode of an ion source, biased negatively with respect to the source's block and sputtered with argon ions. Some of the sputtered sample material is ionized by charge exchange with the argon ions near the ion source's exit slit and accelerated into a mass analyzer. An electron beam is used to ionize the argon sputtering gas. This method provides an advantage in that the initial kinetic energy spread of the monatomic ions is much lower than with other methods. To perform this method, the solid sample is mounted upon a removable probe which is introduced into the ion source or ion chamber of a mass spectrometer. More specifically, the sample is placed in a recessed cavity in the end of the probe located opposite the exit slit of the ion chamber.

  • Patent number: 4166381
Abstract: The apparatus described includes a fixed plate and a movable plate mounted to vibrate relative to the fixed plate in a plane parallel to the plane of the fixed plate. The plates are spaced apart so that fluid can be placed therebetween. A drive system maintains the movable plate vibrating at its resonant frequency. The drive system uses a sinusoidal drive with a linear transducer to facilitate determination of viscosity simply by measuring the peak driving force.
