Abstract: An assembly for mounting tubeless tires on tube type rims. The assembly includes a pair of cooperating annuluses that define respective seating surfaces each of which are adapted for receiving one of the companion beads of the tire. One of the annuluses is telescoped onto the rim and positioned adjacent the rim flange integrally formed with the rim proximate one of its axial end portions. A locking annulus secured to the opposite axial end portion of the rim is adapted for receiving the companion bead and can be readily secured to or removed from the rim for purposes of mounting or demounting the tubeless tire without forcing the beads over a flared flange. The locking annulus may be mounted on a variety of conventional tube type rims while maintaining the bead seating surface at a predetermined spaced location from the rim wall. A suitable pneumatic inner tube inserted in the tire serves to prevent air from escaping the confines of the tubeless tire which may have damaged sealing properties.
Abstract: An apparatus for and method of preventing end effect in deep well impressed current anodes surrounded by a carbonaceous backfill in which the opposite ends of an elongated slender anode are of non-conducting material and the remainder of the anode includes a plurality of alternating segments of conducting and non-conducting material along substantially the entire surface length of the anode. The anode is connected to a source of impressed electrical current and the non-conducting segments cause a substantially constant impressed current density to be transferred from each of the conducting segments along the length of the anode as an electronic discharge and substantially prevents any electrolytic discharge therefrom.

Abstract: A grouting system for anchoring a reinforcing member in a hole at a pull strength level of at least about 175 kg/cm anchoring length within a hour, and usually within 5-10 minutes, includes a hardenable inorganic grouting composition containing an acidic oxy phosphorus compound, e.g., H.sub.3 PO.sub.4 or Al(H.sub.2 PO.sub.4).sub.3 ; a basic Group II or III metal compound capable of reacting with the oxy phosphorus compound in the presence of water to form a monolithic solid, e.g., magnesium oxide; water; and aggregate, e.g., sand. The basic compound preferably is combined with a liquid, e.g., a hydrocarbon, which is substantially nonreactive therewith to form a slush, and the slush is kept separate from an aqueous solution or mixture of the oxy phosphorus compound until use.
Abstract: An improved industrial process and apparatus are provided for producing chlorine and iron oxide in a multi-stage recirculating-fluidized-bed reactor wherein ferric chloride in the vapor phase is reacted with an excess of oxygen at temperatures from 550.degree. to 800.degree. C. The improvement comprises utilizing a reactor that includes an initial "dense" zone and a downstream "dilute" zone. In the dense zone, a fuel is burned, reactants and recirculated iron oxide particles are heated, ferric chloride is vaporized and at least 50% of the ferric chloride is converted to chlorine and iron oxide. A solids volume fraction from 0.3 to 0.6 and a superficial gas velocity from 0.15 to 0.6 meters/second are maintained in the dense zone. In the downstream dilute zone, a solids fraction from 0.005 to 0.05 is maintained, along with a superficial gas velocity from 1.

Abstract: Flame resistance of upholstered furniture is significantly improved by interposing between the cover fabric and the padding or applying to the top side of the cover fabric a layer of neoprene foam capable of forming when exposed to a burning cigarette or under the conditions of a standard flame spread test, a thermally insulating char which does not smolder, and which maintains its structural integrity. The neoprene foam must be so formulated that it also is capable of evolving at combustion temperature sufficient amount of water to efficiently cool the affected area. Normally, the latex from which the foam is prepared is formulated with a char promoter and a hydrated inorganic compound. Upholstered furniture of this invention passes a burning cigarette test and performs extremely well in the flame spread test.

Abstract: A fence is characterized by interchangeably mountable fence sections each having a front and a rear surface, and parallel pairs of vertical and horizontal edges. A mounting member having a mast-receiving opening therein is disposed adjacent each vertical edge of the wall portion of each of the fence sections. Each mounting member has a mating surface thereon disposed in the same plane as the mating surface provided on the other mounting member. When the first mating surface on the wall portion of a first fence section is matingly engaged with a mating surface provided on the other of the mounting members on a next-adjacent fence section, the mast-receiving openings therein are disposed in vertical registration. The fence section, including the wall portions and the mounting members, are integrally fabricated of a plastic material.

Abstract: Toughened multi-phase thermoplastic composition consisting essentially of one phase containing 60 to 99 percent by weight of a polyamide matrix resin of number average molecular weight of at least 5000, and 1 to 40 percent by weight of at least one other phase containing particles of at least one polymer having a particle size in the range of 0.01 to 3.0 microns and being ahdered to the polyamide, the at least one polymer having a tensile modulus in the range of 1.0 to 20,000 p.s.i., the ratio of the tensile modulus of the polyamide matrix to tensile modulus of said at least one polymer being greater than 10 to 1. Said at least one polymer is either a branched or straight chain polymer. The toughened compositions are useful for making molded and extruded parts. Such parts possess greater ductility, less reduction in toughness from scratches and molded in notches and reduced susceptibility to catastrophic failure when compared to known melt fabricated materials.
