Abstract: Peptides having strong affinity for silica as well as surfaces comprising silica are described. The silica-binding peptides may be used to construct peptide based-reagents suitable for delivery of a silica-coated particulate benefit agent to a surface, such as body surface, for personal care and cosmetic applications. Peptide-based reagents formed by coupling at least one of the silica-binding peptides to at least one body surface-binding peptide, either directly or through a spacer, are described. The peptide-based reagents may be used in conjunction with at least one silica-coated colorant to color body surfaces.

Abstract: An integrated process is provided for preparing 2,3,5,6-tetraminotoluene and salts thereof starting with nitration of 2,6-dihalotoluene. The process design eliminates costly intermediate drying and recrystallization steps. Handling of solid materials with possible skin sensitizing properties and toxicity is avoided, thereby eliminating human and environmental exposure.
Abstract: Biomass is pretreated using an organic solvent solution under alkaline conditions in the presence of one of more sulfide (hydrosulfide) salt and optionally one or more additional nucleophile to fragment and extract lignin. Pretreated biomass is further hydrolyzed with a saccharification enzyme consortium. Fermentable sugars released by saccharification may be utilized for the production of target chemicals by fermentation.
Abstract: Methods for treating lignocellulosic biomass to produce readily saccharifiable carbohydrate-enriched biomass are provided. In one method, lignocellulosic biomass comprising lignin is treated with aqueous ammonia, then contacted with a gas comprising ozone at a temperature of about 0° C. to about 50° C. In another method, lignocellulosic biomass comprising lignin is contacted with a gas comprising ozone at a temperature of about 0° C. to about 50° C., then treated with aqueous ammonia. The readily saccharifiable carbohydrate-enriched biomass may be saccharified with an enzyme consortium to produce fermentable sugars.
Abstract: Short single chain peptides having affinity for a target surface often lack the binding durability required for certain commercial applications. One way to improve durability is to promote multivalent binding by linking together binding sequences using peptide linkers. However, the resulting single chain binding peptides often suffer from linker entropy. It has been discovered that the use of rigid peptide linkers when linking together multiple binding sequences enhances the binding affinity of the resulting single chain peptide.

Abstract: A process is provided to produce 2,3,5,6-tetraaminotoluene. Highly pure salts of 2,3,5,6-tetraaminotoluene are produced via reduction of 2,6-diamino-3,5-dinitrotoluene. The 2,3,5,6-tetraaminotoluene salt is precipitated as a clean (>99% purity) product. The salt is a precursor for monomers to make a polybenzimidazole for high performance fibers.
Abstract: Disclosed is a process for the preparation of fluorine-containing olefins comprising contacting a chlorofluoroalkene with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst at a temperature sufficient to cause replacement of the chlorine substituents of the chlorofluoroalkene with hydrogen to produce a fluorine-containing olefin, wherein said catalyst is a composition comprising chromium, nickel and optionally an alkali metal selected from potassium and cesium. Also disclosed are catalyst compositions for the hydrodechlorination of chlorofluoroalkenes comprising copper, nickel, and an alkali metal selected from potassium and cesium, and methods of making such catalysts.

Abstract: An improved process is provided for the preparation of 2,6-diamino-3,5-dinitrotoluene by amination of 2,6-dichloro-3,5-dinitrotoluene. The presence of water unexpectedly results in a highly pure product, free of glycol ether impurities. This product can be used to make highly pure 2,3,5,6-tetraaminotoluene, which in turn can be used to make high molecular weight polybenzimidazoles for high strength fibers.

Abstract: A targeting method is described that allows precise cassette replacement at a previously characterized genetic locus. A target DNA construct containing a pair of incompatible FRT sites flanking a target cassette was introduced into soybean by regular biolistic transformation. Transgenic events containing a single complete copy of the target site were then selected and retransformed with a donor DNA construct containing the identical pair of incompatible FRT sites flanking a donor cassette. Precise DNA cassette exchange happened between the target cassette and the donor cassette via recombinase mediated cassette exchange (RMCE) so that the donor cassette was introduced at the exact genomic site previously occupied by the target cassette. Through repeated RMCE using additional incompatible FRT sites, multiple groups of transgenes can be stacked at the same genomic locus.
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a full color, reflective display includes the steps of depositing a first plurality of electrophoretic display elements in substantial registration with a first electrode and a second plurality of electrophoretic display elements in substantial registration with a second electrode. The electrophoretic display elements include a capsule containing a species of particles dispersed in a suspending fluid. The selective deposition of the display elements can be achieved by ink jet printing methods, screen printing methods or other printing methods. In some embodiments the electrodes are printed onto the substrate before selective deposition of the display elements, while in other embodiments the substrate is provided having the electrodes already disposed on it. In still other embodiments, the sequence of printing of electrodes and electrophoretic display elements can be varied.
