Abstract: This invention relates to an isolated nucleic acid fragment encoding a phytic acid biosynthetic enzyme. The invention also relates to the construction of a chimeric gene encoding all or a portion of the phytic acid biosynthetic enzyme, in sense or antisense orientation, wherein expression of the chimeric gene results in production of altered levels of the phytic acid biosynthetic enzyme in a transformed host cell.
Abstract: An automatic tuning system for a magnetic field generating tuned circuit includes a processor configured to maintain the resonant frequency of a tuned circuit equal to a reference frequency. The tuned circuit is driven by a power amplifier whose output provides an amplified signal at the reference frequency. The tuned circuit includes a magnetic field generating inductor and a bank of individually switchable capacitors controlled by the processor capable of adding and removing the respective capacitances to and from the tuned circuit. The inductor includes a Faraday shield to shield the tuned circuit from the influence of electric fields. Abstract: Primary and auxiliary lens assemblies are provided that allow a wearer easy usage with a reduced risk of misalignment or detachment through the use of micromagnets. Conventional magnetic auxiliary lens assemblies are typically not compatible with frameless or rimless designs. The improved assemblies disclosed herein employ magnets embedded in either or both of the auxiliary lens assemblies and the bushings of the primary lens assemblies.
Abstract: Genes have been identified in the Methylomonas genome that are responsive to various metabolic and growth conditions. The identified responsiveness of these genes allows for the use of their promoters in regulated gene expression in C1 metabolizing bacteria. In particular, the hps promoter, which in its native state drives the expression of 3-hexulose-6-phosphate synthase (HPS), was found to be useful for directing expression of heterolgous coding regions (e.g., crtZ) in the obligate methanotroph Methylomonas sp. 16a.

Abstract: The present invention provides methods to engineer microorganisms for the production of C30-aldehyde carotenoids. Specifically, various combinations of crtM, sqs, crtN and crtN2 genes from Staphylococcus aureus and Methylomonas sp. 16a can be co-expressed in transformant hosts, leading to the production of diaponeurosporene monoaldehyde, diapocarotene monoaldehyde, and/or diapocarotene dialdehyde. In a preferred embodiment, the genetically engineered pathway is introduced into a strain of Escherichia coli that has been engineered for the expression of carotenoids, and the C30-carotenoid product is diapocarotene dialdehyde.
Abstract: Novel phosphine and phosphine oxide ligands are prepared using polymeric supports. These compounds can be easily cleaved from the support, and along with the corresponding supported compounds, used as ligands in the preparation of novel, metal-complexed catalysts.

Abstract: A prefabricated cribbing column for supporting a mine roof. The column includes a plurality of concrete cribbing elements the majority of which are interleaved with load transfer disks. Two of the cribbing elements are interleaved with a handle element. The column assembly of cribbing elements, load transfer disks, and handle element are secured together in an integral unit by a steel strap. The handle element extends substantially beyond the outer periphery of the cribbing elements enabling access and lifting by a forklift or similar machinery. The handle element enables the integral column to be easily moved from one location to another. The cribbing elements are preferably constructed of steel fiber reinforced concrete. A column consisting of five cribbing elements has shown to be capable of supporting a load of 575 tons with a deflection of 2.5 inches or less.
Abstract: Disclosed is a novel fluid flow field plate for use in a solid polymer electrolyte fuel cell. The flow field plate is made of a suitable electrically conducting material and comprises a substantially planar surface, a flow field formed in said substantially planar surface, said flow field comprising a plurality of staggered lands defining a network of substantially symmetric interconnected orifices and diagonal channels in the flow field and a fluid supply manifold through which fuel and an oxidant are introduced to the flow field and a fluid exhaust manifold through which reaction by-products and excess fuel and oxidant are removed from the flow field. Streams of the fuel, oxidant and reaction by-products are continually separated and diverted into separate channels, and the separated streams are then mixed with streams from adjacent channels in the orfices.

Abstract: A new and distinct cultivar of Buxus semperviresn, ‘Polar’, found in a province of Sweden where the climate is cold (representing zone 4 of the Swedish Hardiness Map) that exhibits exceptional winter hardiness. ‘Polar’ is further characterized by a dense, compact, and medium to broad growth habit and evergreen foliage with leaves that are broadly elliptic in shape, shiny in appearance, and dark green in color that exhibits no substantial change in coloration during the winter. ‘Polar’ is well suited for topiary and for use in parks and gardens in cold climates, where other Boxwood cultivars are inappropriate.
