Abstract: A gray scale bistable electro-optic display is driven by storing a look-up table containing data representing the impulses necessary for transitions, storing data representing at least an initial state of each pixel of the display, storing data representing temporal and gray level prior states of each pixel, receiving an input signal representing a desired final state of at least one pixel of the display; and generating an output signal representing the impulse necessary for a transition, as determined from the look-up table, dependent upon the temporal and gray level prior states. Other similar methods for driving such displays are also disclosed.

Abstract: A method of arranging microspheres with liquid, a microsphere arranging device, and a semiconductor device are provided. The method comprising the steps of placing the semiconductor device with a large number of pads with holes, on a loading table with a variable tilt angle, and pouring microspheres together with conductive liquid held in a holding container onto the semiconductor device. The microspheres are storably placed in the holes on the pads of the semiconductor device. The non-stored microspheres and conductive liquid are accumulated in a receiving tank, and the conductive liquid including the accumulated microspheres are transferred to the holding container by a pump.

Abstract: A case for extruded powders comprising a surface having at least one groove with extruded powders disposed therein. The powders are preferably not all the same color. Preferably, forty percent or more of each extruded powder rises above the surface and preferably, the cross sectional shape of each groove matches the cross sectional shape of that part of the extruded powder that is disposed in the groove. Optional dividers separate the extruded powders so that they do not contact each other. Optional restraints inhibit the powders from coming out of the grooves. Also optional are an outer container into which the surface is disposed and cover to protect the powders when not in use. The case may comprise other cosmetic elements such as an applicator, a mirror or a pan or pressed powder.
Abstract: A non-linear element is formed on a flexible substrate by securing the substrate to a rigid carrier, forming the non-linear element, and then separating the flexible substrate from the carrier. The process allows flexible substrates to be processed in a conventional fab intended to process rigid substrates. In a second method, a transistor is formed on a insulating substrate by forming gate electrodes, depositing a dielectric layer, a semiconductor layer and a conductive layer, patterning the conductive layer to form source, drain and pixel electrodes, covering the channel region of the resultant transistor with an etch-resistant material and etching using the etch-resistant material and the conductive layer as a mask, the etching extending substantially through the semiconductor layer between adjacent transistors.

Abstract: An electrophoretic display comprises an electrophoretic medium having a plurality of charged particles suspended in a suspending fluid, and two electrodes disposed on opposed sides of the electrophoretic medium. At least one of the electrodes is light-transmissive and forming a viewing surface. The display has a closed optical state in which the charged particles are spread over substantially the entire viewing surface so that light cannot pass through the medium, and an open optical state in which the electrophoretic particles form chains extending between the electrodes so that light can pass through the electrophoretic medium. Insulating layers are disposed between the electrodes and the electrophoretic medium. Similarly electrophoretic displays are provided equipped with color filter arrays or reflectors.

Abstract: A grinding tool for sharpening tools is provided comprising an oscillatory drive the output shaft of which is driven oscillatingly about its longitudinal axis. The grinding tool comprises a holder for mounting a working part which is configured as a grinding plate having a flat grinding surface. The grinding tool is held by the holder in a plane extending substantially perpendicularly to the drive shaft. The holder comprises a fixed holding section and a removable clamping part between which the working part can be clamped at one end by means of at least one tensioning part. The clamping part comprises an outer surface which serves as a guide surface for supporting a surface of the working part to adjust a preset angle between the outer surface of the clamping part and the grinding surface of the tool to be sharpened.
Abstract: A vehicle detector system having a number of individual vehicle detectors each capable of sampling a plurality of vehicle loops in mutual synchronization. One detector operates as a master detector for synchronization purposes; the other detectors are operated as slave detectors. The system can be configured for series or parallel synchronous operation. The system is particularly advantageous in installations requiring a large number of closely spaced vehicle loops each operated by a detector set to high sensitivity.

Abstract: Olefins are polymerized by novel transition metal complexes of selected iminocarboxylate and iminoamido ligands, sometimes in the presence of cocatalysts such as alkylaluminum compounds or neutral Lewis acids. Olefins which may be (co)polymerized include ethylene, ?-olefins, and olefins containing polar groups such as olefinic esters for example acrylate esters. Also described are certain “Zwitterionic” transition metal complexes as polymerization catalysts for making polar copolymers. The resulting polymers are useful as thermoplastics and elastomers.

Abstract: Compositions, methods, and systems for manufacturing articles, particularly containers and packaging materials, having a fiber-reinforced, starch-bound cellular matrix. Suitable mixtures used to form the articles are prepared by first preparing a viscous preblended mixture comprising water, a gelatinized starch-based binder, and fibers having an average length greater than about 2 mm. The highly viscous preblended mixture effectively transfers the shearing forces of the mixer to the fibers. The final moldable mixture is then prepared by mixing into the preblended mixture the remaining starch-based binder, water, and other desired admixtures, e.g., mold-releasing agents, inorganic filler rheology-modifying agents, plasticizers, coating materials, and dispersants, in the correct proportions to form an article which has the desired performance criteria.
