Abstract: This invention pertains to novel fibers made of ?(1?;3) polysaccharides, and a process for their production. The fibers of the invention have “cotton-like” properties but can be produced as continuous filaments on a year-round basis. The fibers are useful in textile applications.
Abstract: A one-piece pull-tight or strap-type security seal adapted for closing bags or the like that is designer to be easily applied in comparison with existing ones. One seal of this type has a lever operation in which a clousure strap (4) is integral with a central or operating portion (2) that is, in turn, integral with a lever member (6) to which the strap may be fixed during application around the neck of a bag to be closed. The lever member is then pivoted outwardly and backwardly over the opening portion, tightening the loop so formed by means of a lever action, and then locked by security locking formations (16, 19) to effect sealing. The closure strap is for all effects flat, its formations for fixing it to the lever member (6) including a series of orifices (7) distributed along its length, whereas the immobilizing formation for the closure strap includes a first protuberance (15) adapted, on formation of the loop (25), to be received in one of the orifices (7).
Abstract: A system provides messages from deceased relatives and friends, which messages are readily accessible. Before death a person records various messages for loved ones. The system stores these messages at a location and associates PIN numbers with each individual for whom there is a message. Either the intended recipient is given information about the message or leaving of a message by a symbol located in a conspicuous place, e.g., on the headstone of the deceased. The person then calls a 900 number or logs onto a specific website. In response to the correct answers to certain questions, the intended recipient is given their PIN. Using the PIN, the person can contact the system and received the recorded message at any time, e.g., by cell phone at the grave site. Alternatively, the grave site itself can be wired to provide the message, e.g., from a tape recorder over headphones or at special kiosks at the cemetery.
Abstract: A gasket seal for piping and equipment flanges comprises a sealing ring and a centralization ring, preferably concentric rings made of a metallic alloy. The sealing ring has an outer contour surface having a substantially L-shaped cross-section comprising an innermost portion and an outermost portion extending axially and a radial portion interconnecting the inner and the outer portions. The centralization ring has an inner contour surface defining a central opening, substantially coincident with the innermost portion of the outer contour surface of the sealing ring, so that the latter can be fitted into the opening as far as the radial portion of its outer contour surface. A deformation is made on the innermost portion of the outer contour surface of the sealing ring, forming a projection, whereby the centralization ring can be retained between the projection and radial portion without the centralization ring needing to be separated and then welded.

Abstract: An electromechanical information browsing device that controls page flipping actions of information displayed as an e-book on a display device. The browsing device includes a controller that provides tactile feedback so as to lessen the user-interface differences between conventional books and e-books. Sensors and control mechanisms in the controller generate a series of electrical signals that are interpreted by the computer that displays the e-book to control various browsing operations, such as flipping pages, controlling a rate of page flipping, jumping to pre-set locations in the e-book, etc.

Abstract: A method for sensing the state of an electrophoretic display includes the steps of applying an electrical signal to a display element, measuring an electrical response for the display element, and deducing the state of the display element from the measured electrical response. Also, the parameters of the display materials are determined using the encapsulated electrophoretic display media as a sensor, either alone or in conjunction with other sensors.

Abstract: A focal point reflector is used in conjunction with a dual heterodyne circuit to reduce reception nulls that can occur when performing ultrasonic measurements. The focal plane reflector is a flat non-porous or reflective material, such as printed circuit board (PCB) that is placed behind and in parallel with an ultrasonic array of piezoelectric transducers. In accordance with the invention, the addition of the focal point reflector to the array of piezoelectric array permits the reflection of ultrasonic energy that may “fall” between the crystals in the array and then back into the crystal elements.
Abstract: An electrophoretic display comprises an electrophoretic medium having a plurality of charged particles suspended in a suspending fluid, and two electrodes disposed on opposed sides of the electrophoretic medium. At least one of the electrodes is light-transmissive and forming a viewing surface. The display has a closed optical state in which the charged particles are spread over substantially the entire viewing surface so that light cannot pass through the medium, and an open optical state in which the electrophoretic particles form chains extending between the electrodes so that light can pass through the electrophoretic medium. Insulating layers are disposed between the electrodes and the electrophoretic medium. Similarly electrophoretic displays are provided equipped with color filter arrays or reflectors.

Abstract: 1—“A DOUBLE PASS OPTICAL AMPLIFIER WITH UNIDIRECTIONAL COMPENSATION OF CHROMATIC DISPERSION AND OBSTRUCTION OF BACKSCATTERING”, composed by an EDFA, whose input/output stage is integrated by a circulator (6), and the amplification stage is composed by a pump laser (1) and an Erbium-doped fiber connected to a multiplexer (3), said amplifier, in which the optical signal undergoes an initial amplification while passing through the Erbium-doped fiber on the way through the fiber and a second amplification on the way back of the same fiber, presents, after the amplification stage, at least one dispersion compensating fiber (11), whose input and output are connected to the free extremity of the Erbium-doped fiber (2), through at least one device (12) arranged in the circuit in order to prevent the backscattering generated in the dispersion compensating fiber (11) from returning to the Erbium-doped fiber (2) and to allow the signal to travel through the dispersion compensating fiber (11) only once and in one directi

Abstract: The present invention relates to a sheet structure for electrical insulation or flame resistance comprising a barrier ply having a mica-rich face and a mica-poor face and a reinforcing ply containing a saturable backing layer attached to the mica-poor face of the barrier ply.
Abstract: A method has been developed to maintain the health of an activated sludge environment in a wastewater process comprising monitoring the levels of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) produced as an indicator of bioreactor health and regulating the concentration of feed nutrients and nitrate to maintain bioreactor health. In general, levels of PHA in excess of about 15% to about 20% dry weight of the biomass is an indication that the biocatalytic efficiency of the wastewater treatment process is impaired.

Abstract: A base frame (2) for use with a base station in mobile communication (aerial, operating cabinet) comprising a first and second cross arm (3, 4), frictionally connected or clamped, and adjustably connected by means of stays (11, 12, 13, 14) to a supporting surface (1), whereby the first and second cross arm are arranged at a distance from the supporting surface (1), a first and second longitudinal arm (3, 4) adjustably frictionally connected or clamped to the first and second cross arm (5, 6).
Abstract: The invention is a method of bonding a ceramic part to a metal part by heating a component assembly comprised of the metal part, the ceramic part, and a compatible interlayer material such as titanium-nickel alloy placed between the two parts and heated at a temperature that is greater than the eutectic temperature of the interlayer material, where alloys, intermetallics or solid solution formed between the metal part and the metal interlayer material, but that is less than the melting point of either the ceramic part or the metal part. The component assembly is held in intimate contact at temperature in a non-reactive atmosphere for a sufficient time to develop a hermetic and strong bond between the ceramic part and the metal part. The bonded component assembly is optionally treated with acid to remove unwanted materials, to assure a biocompatible component assembly for implantation in living tissue.
