  • Patent number: 8412246
Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for coordinating the scheduling of beamformed data to reduce interference in a wireless system. A first optimum phase adjustment is determined to increase the gain of an intended signal at a mobile device. A second optimum phase adjustment is determined to decrease the gain of interfering signals received at the mobile device. Using a phase adjustment map, a transmission is scheduled at a base station within wireless resources using the first optimum phase adjustment, at the same time an interfering base station is transmitting at the second optimum phase adjustment angle. Thus, signal strength is greatly improved while interference is greatly reduced, improving the efficiency of the wireless system.

  • Patent number: 8406759
Abstract: A networked computing system, including multiple radio access nodes (RANs), multiple radio communications controllers (RCCs), and a data communications network facilitating communications amongst the RANs and the RCCs of the system. A regional RAN receives a default eMIB associated with a first type of RAN (e.g., a macrocell, microcell, picocells, or femtocell RAN types) from a RCC, in response to a registration event of a RAN initialization process. The regional RAN maintains a dynamic eMIB comprising network operating parameters determined by various self-optimization processes. The network operating parameters of the dynamic eMIB are selected to fall within a range designated by the default eMIB. During a network failure condition, the regional RAN is configured to use a temporary eMIB comprising failure level operating parameters in order to mitigate network deficiencies caused by the network failure condition.

  • Patent number: 8406777
Abstract: Systems and methods are described for segregating airlink resources in a wireless communication network by traffic type. When voice data and traffic data are sent simultaneously in a wireless network using a limited set of frequency resources, the data traffic can cause unacceptable interference in the voice traffic. Accordingly, transceivers share their voice traffic and data traffic demands and may allocate portions of an airlink resource into resource zones for exclusive use by voice traffic and data traffic. Within each resource zone, the transmission can be optimally managed for each traffic type, and interference between voice traffic and data traffic is reduced.

  • Patent number: 8385220
Abstract: A networked computing system including multiple network base stations, user equipment, and a data communications network facilitating communications amongst all devices of the networked computing system. The radio frequency isolation between two network base stations is determined by taking measurements of a radio operating parameter associated with at least one interference source. A regional network device located near one of the two base stations is configured measures the radio operating parameter on a periodic basis and then transfers the measurements to a radio communications controller. The radio communications controller then allocates network communications resources to user equipment, and optionally designates radio operation levels for one or more network base stations, based on a comparison of the received measurements to known broadcast levels of the radio operating parameter.

  • Patent number: 8385967
Abstract: A wireless base station and method are described for adjusting an output power level for self-optimizing radio access node. The base station monitors a link metric of a downlink traffic channel and records the measurements as historical link metric data. Later, the base station compares the link metric with the historical link metric data and adjusts the power level of a broadcast channel and one or more system channels. This may reduce the operating radius of the base station, including the broadcast channels, system channels, and traffic channels, to reduce interference with other cells in a network. This method may be used in a femtocell or picocell wireless base station.

  • Patent number: 8229368
Abstract: A data communications system includes a controller device and multiple client devices in data communications with each other over a data communications network. The controller device is configured to issue an instruction to a portion of the client devices that instructs them to acquire an interference characteristic associated with one or more external interference source. The interference characteristic may be measured interference magnitudes associated with a frequency of data communications over the data communications link. The portion of client devices transmits the measured interference magnitudes to the controller device. The controller device then determines a location of one or more interference sources based on the transmitted data.

  • Patent number: 8175603
Abstract: A wireless network for addressing the unavailability of airlink connection resources (“resources”) is disclosed. A plurality of smaller cells are dynamically created within the coverage boundary of a macrocell, wherein each smaller cell is capable of providing the same resources available from the macrocell. The network further addresses the inefficient “push” schema for handover of services from one node to another. Nodes within each of the plurality of smaller cells continuously scan other nodes to measure resources used by the other nodes for handover using a “pull” schema. The measurement tells a node if it is capable of providing at least a minimum grade of service, and if so, the node informs the subscriber device. If the measurement is mutually valid, the current node initiates the handover to the node. After the handover, the new node continues to provide the at least minimum grade of service.

  • Publication number: 20120009964
Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for coordinating the scheduling of beamformed data to reduce interference in a wireless system. A customer premise equipment (CPE) uses a plurality of bits to quantize the phase angle of the beamformed data received by CPE and reports it to its serving base station. The serving base station selects one of the phase adjustment angles based on the bits received from the CPE in order to schedule the data transmission to the CPE. The phase adjustment angles are in “n” degree steps.

  • Publication number: 20100246391
Abstract: A system and method are described for reducing congestion in a wireless network. A wireless base station becomes congested when substantially all of the available base station airlink resources are being used during a period of time. It is useful, however, to distinguish between periods of congestion with few users and periods where a larger number of users are using the base station. When there are few users a congestion situation is not necessarily a problem, while it is more likely that users' quality of experience and quality of service suffers as the number of users increases. This system and method determines when a base station is congested and implements a congestion prime management scenario when the number of active users is above an activity threshold.

  • Publication number: 20100216407
Abstract: A system and method are described for dynamic temperature calibration of a frequency reference in a wireless base station. In a consumer grade base station, a reference oscillator may encounter frequency drift as the temperature of the base station changes. This causes interference as the transmission signal is not synchronized with other frequency resources in a network. An improved method of calibrating a reference frequency includes measuring a frequency difference between a frequency derived from an accurate reference frequency in a first base station and a frequency derived from a less accurate frequency reference in a second base station, determining a calibration factor for the offset, and applying the calibration factor to the base station to correct frequency drift. The calibration factors may be correlated with an operating temperature of the base station and stored in a temperature calibration table in the base station device.
