Abstract: First and second bed monitoring systems are usable in a home and in a healthcare institution, respectively, and reliably detect an attempted departure from a bed or the like by a monitored person before the monitored person's feet ever touch the floor. Both monitoring systems generate an RF signal field or disabling signal encompassing a designated volume in the vicinity of the bed and produce an alarm signal whenever an ankle bracelet or some other device worn by the monitored person moves outside of the monitored volume. The alarm signal may be generated either at the bed or at a remote location, and the alarm may be sounded either at the remote location, at the bed, or even transmitted to a nurse's station or the like. A home/area monitoring system is also provided and generates an alarm signal whenever the signal from a user worn bracelet transmitter falls below a threshold strength indicating that the user has moved beyond a "safe" area.
Abstract: A composite video input signal is combined with a noise reduction signal to form a noise reduced first video signal which is delayed by multiple time periods of (i) one line less one-half color cycle, (ii) one line and (iii) one line plus one-half color cycle to form respective ones of first, second and third time delayed signals. The first and third delayed signals are combined to form an averaged signal from which a subtractor subtracts the composite video input signal. The resultant difference signal is limited to form the noise reduction signal. The noise reduced first video signal and the second delayed video signal are combined in an output circuit to provide noise reduced and separated chrominance and luminance output signals.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a CRT 10 having an evacuated envelope comprising a funnel 11 sealed at one end to a faceplate panel 12 with a luminescent screen 14 on an interior surface thereof. A color selection electrode 16, mounted on a frame 19, is disposed within the envelope in proximity to the screen. An internal magnetic shield 22, is secured to the frame of the color selection electrode, and is spaced from and extends along at least a portion of the funnel. The magnetic shield has a plurality of openings 32 therethrough. An evaporable getter 28 is disposed within the envelope adjacent to the exterior surface 26 of the magnetic shield 22. The magnetic shield is improved by having tabs or louvers 36, 38, 136, 138, associated with the openings, for restricting the deposition of a film of getter material 30 to the exterior surface 26 of the shield 22.

Abstract: A digital frequency discriminator processes input pulses including first and second time separated input pulses to determine if the frequency of any two sequential pulses lie within a predetermined frequency band with upper and lower frequency limits and that they are received for at least a predetermined period of time. A delay timer is coupled to sense the input pulse stream and operates in a pulse sensing standby mode prior to receipt of the first input pulse. Upon receipt of the first input pulse, the delay timer switches into a time-limited active mode to define a fixed duration delay interval having a duration equal to the period of the upper frequency limit of the frequency band. The delay timer switches back into the pulse sensing standby mode upon completion of the delay interval. A gate timer is coupled to the output of the delay timer and switches from a standby mode into a time-limited active mode upon completion of the delay interval to define a fixed duration bandwidth interval.
Abstract: A state machine synthesis tool, a state table script generator, a state table extraction tool, a simulation driver, a simulator, and an interactive reporter, are provided to verify the design and implementation of finite state machines (FSMs). The synthesis tool takes a formal specification of a logic circuit where FSMs are embedded as input, and generates a gate level specification of the logic circuit. The state table script generator takes the same formal specification of the logic circuit as input, and generates state table extraction command files for the FSMs. The state table extraction tool takes the gate level specification of the logic circuit and the state table extraction command files of the FSMs as inputs, and generates state tables for the FSMs.

Abstract: Disclosed is a manually operable calculator for determining a fourth value on the basis of three variables. According to one example, the calculator is used to determine the total storage available for a recording medium consisting of several units, such as hard disks or magneto optical disks. Specifically, values for total storage are displayed in response to inputting the capacity of each disk, the number of disks and the data recording rate. According to the invention, the calculator comprises a slide member upon which two rotating wheels are mounted along a common axis of rotation. The slide and wheels each have indicia corresponding to the three variables printed thereon. The indicia on the wheels is selected by rotation while the indicia on the slide is selected by moving the slide within a sleeve having openings formed therein.

Abstract: An apparatus for translating and rotating a cartridge (such as an optical disk cartridge) which utilizes a U-shaped rack engaged with a non-translating (but rotating) pinion; a carrier for the cartridge connected to the rack, and a motor for spinning the pinion on its axis. The apparatus enables the cartridge to be inserted with a shutter face forward, and translates and rotates the cartridge into the final (loaded) position with the shutter face in the opposite direction.

Abstract: A blind equalization process (200) for an adaptive equalizer including a plurality of taps, each having a corresponding coefficient, is disclosed which comprises the following steps. Blind equalization (204) is performed on a subset of the coefficients in the adaptive equalizer. Then, if the coefficients have converged (206), a decision directed adaptive equalization process (220) is initiated.
Abstract: A system for securely distributing a communications key from a master unit to a remote unit for use in cryptographic communications between the master and remote units employs first and second secret numbers stored in both the master and remote units, and a random number generated in the master unit which is combined with the first secret number to produce a first intermediate number which is in turn combined with the second secret number to produce a second intermediate number. The second intermediate number is combined with the communications key to produce a transmission number sent with the random number to the remote unit. The remote unit, using the random number, the transmission number, and the first and second secret numbers, is able to reproduce the communications key.
Abstract: An integrated circuit (IC) includes circuitry for generating a clock signal during both a normal mode of operation and a test mode of operation. During the normal mode, an input clock signal is delayed via a skew corrector. In test mode, an input test clock signal bypasses the skew corrector via a clock signal source selector. The clock signal source selector is controlled automatically by a mode detector that responds to the input clock signals to determine the mode of operation of the IC.

Abstract: A data slicer for extracting auxiliary video data from a video signal adapts a data slicing level to the amplitude of the data signal as indicated by the average value of a run-in clock (RIC) signal that is included in the video signal. Control of the slicing level occurs during a window interval that spans an integral number of cycles of the RIC signal. The presence of the RIC signal within the window interval may be verified as part of the slicing level adjustment operation. The data slicer is suitable for implementation in a digital integrated circuit.
Abstract: A satellite receiver for digitally encoded television signals includes apparatus for aligning the receiving antenna which is responsive to the number of errors contained in the digitally encoded television signals. Error correction is possible if the number of errors is below a threshold and not possible if the number of errors is above the threshold. The elevation of the antenna is set according to the location of the receiving site. Thereafter, the azimuth of the antenna is coarsely aligned by first rotating the antenna in small increments to locate a region in which error correction is possible. During this coarse alignment procedure, the tuner of the satellite receiver attempts to locate a tuning frequency at which and demodulation and error correction is possible. If no appropriate frequency is found after a range of frequencies have been searched, the antenna is rotated by a small increment.

Abstract: In a packet audio/video signal transmission system, program guide information is formed as a master guide and a special guide. The master guide contains programming information for the period of the current several hours. The special guide contains programming information for the next thirty days, for example. The master guide is sent as a service on each carrier or transponder to render it readily available regardless of the carrier frequency to which the receiver is tuned. The special guide is transmitted on only one of the carriers (transponders) to minimize use of system bandwidth.
