Patent number: 9910442Abstract: Ray tracing and static obstacle maps can be used in the operation of a vehicle. Sensor data of at least a portion of an external environment of the vehicle can be acquired. A dynamic obstacle in the external environment of the vehicle can be detected based on the acquired sensor data. In response to detecting a dynamic obstacle, it can be determined whether a secondary occluded area is located behind the dynamic obstacle relative to a current location of the vehicle based on a static obstacle map. Responsive to determining that a secondary occluded area is located behind the dynamic obstacle relative to a current location of the vehicle based on a static obstacle map, a driving maneuver for the vehicle can be determined based on at least the dynamic obstacle and the secondary occluded area. The vehicle can be caused to implement the determined driving maneuver.Type: GrantFiled: June 28, 2016Date of Patent: March 6, 2018Assignee: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc.Inventors: Nobuhide Kamata, Xue Mei, Katsuhiro Sakai

Patent number: 9909987Abstract: Systems, methods, and software for measuring the spatially variable relative dielectric permittivity of materials along a linear or otherwise configured sensor element, and more specifically the spatial variability of soil moisture in one dimension as inferred from the dielectric profile of the soil matrix surrounding a linear sensor element. Various methods described herein combine advances in the processing of time domain reflectometry data with innovations in physical sensing apparatuses. These advancements enable high temporal (and thus spatial) resolution of electrical reflectance continuously along an insulated waveguide that is permanently emplaced in contact with adjacent soils. The spatially resolved reflectance is directly related to impedance changes along the waveguide that are dominated by electrical permittivity contrast due to variations in soil moisture. Various methods described herein are thus able to monitor soil moisture in profile with high spatial resolution.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 2015Date of Patent: March 6, 2018Assignee: Transcend Engineering and Technology, LLCInventor: Stephen P. Patent number: 9909549Abstract: Various technologies presented herein relate to enhancing mixing inside a combustion chamber to form one or more locally premixed mixtures comprising fuel and charge-gas with low peak fuel to charge-gas ratios to enable minimal, or no, generation of soot and other undesired emissions during ignition and subsequent combustion of the locally premixed mixtures. To enable sufficient mixing of the fuel and charge-gas, a jet of fuel can be directed to pass through a bore of a duct causing charge-gas to be drawn into the bore creating turbulence to mix the fuel and the drawn charge-gas. The duct can be located proximate to an opening in a tip of a fuel injector. The duct can comprise of one or more holes along its length to enable charge-gas to be drawn into the bore, and further, the duct can cool the fuel and/or charge-gas prior to combustion.Type: GrantFiled: July 1, 2015Date of Patent: March 6, 2018Assignee: National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLCInventor: Charles J. Patent number: 9908468Abstract: An apparatus and method for generating a collision warning to a driver of a host vehicle. The method estimates geometry of a lane of a road in which the host vehicle is traversing and further identifies, via a non-line-of-sight sensor, at least one remote vehicle traversing ahead of the host vehicle in the estimated lane of the road. The host vehicle tracks, via a line of sight sensor, a preceding vehicle traversing directly ahead of the host vehicle in the estimated road-lane and detects a speed of a slowest remote vehicle of the at least one identified remote vehicles. The host vehicle predicts a motion of the preceding vehicle based on the detected speed of the slowest remote vehicle and an inter-vehicle distance, and generates a warning to the driver of the host vehicle based on the predicted relative motion of the preceding vehicle to the host vehicle.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 2016Date of Patent: March 6, 2018Assignee: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc.Inventors: Vladimeros Vladimerou, Derek Caveney
