Patent number: 9851043Abstract: A crack arrestor apparatus and method for making same by applying layers of a composite material of non-metallic fibers and resin around a length of pipe; the fibers generally aligned with the pipe circumference. The applied layers have a thicker portion in the middle and a thinner portion on the ends. Part of the pipe covered by the thicker portion is then yielded by application of radial force past the elastic limit of the pipe, thereby creating circumferential tension on the composite. At least a portion of the composite remains in circumferential tension upon release of the radial force. The residual stresses in the yielded metal pipe assist to arrest crack propagation. Thereby, the process to arrest a crack in a metal pipe includes maintaining circumferential tension in a composite residing around the pipe while maintaining compressive circumferential residual stress on the metal pipe covered by the composite.Type: GrantFiled: January 19, 2016Date of Patent: December 26, 2017Assignee: Stress Engineering Services, Inc.Inventor: Richard C. Patent number: 9853509Abstract: Torque is improved in a composite torque rotating electric machine that uses permanent magnets having a low residual magnetic flux density such as ferrite magnets, and includes: a stator comprising armature windings arranged at a fixed interval at multiple positions on the inner periphery; a rotor which has a permanent magnet in a cylindrical core comprising laminated magnetic steel sheets and is arranged inside of the stator; and magnetic flux blocking units provided across the circumferential direction on the outer periphery of the rotor that block the closed loop magnetic flux generated around the stator windings. The magnetic flux blocking units can be multiple permanent magnets, with a non-magnetic body such as an air gap disposed between them. The distance between the permanent magnets and the non-magnetic part can be smaller than the interval at which the armature windings are arranged.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 2012Date of Patent: December 26, 2017Assignee: AIDA ENGINEERING, LTD.Inventors: Yukinari Fujisawa, Masataka Yahara, Hiroshi Nagase, Fumio Tajima, Yoshihiro Yamaguchi

Publication number: 20170363032Abstract: Methods and systems for use of model predictive control (MPC) controllers utilizing hybrid, quadratic solvers to solve a linear feasibility problem corresponding to a nonlinear problem for an internal combustion engine plant such as a diesel engine air path. The MPC solves a convex, quadratic cost function having optimization variables and constraints and directs the plant per the output solutions to optimize plant operation while adhering to regulations and constraints. The problem includes a combination of iterative and direct calculations in the primal space depending on whether a partial step (iterative) or a full step (direct) is attempted. Further, primal and dual space array matrices are pre-computed and stored offline and are retrieved via use of a unique identifier associated with a specific active set for a set of constraints. Such hybrid and/or offline calculations allow for a reduction in computational power while still maintaining accuracy of solution results.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 17, 2016Publication date: December 21, 2017Applicants: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc., The Regents Of The University Of MichiganInventors: Jason R.
