  • Patent number: 4744449
Abstract: A compact electromagnetic clutch has a toothed armature connected to a driven hub and a toothed driving hub which are moved into engagement with each other upon energization of an electromagnet. A precompressed spring disposed between the bottom of a cylindrical cup attached to the armature and the head of a pin attached to the driven hub biases the armature away from the driving hub. The precompressed spring provides a force strong enough to overcome residual magnetism. The spring is further compressed when the armature moves into engagement with the driving hub upon energization of the electromagnet. After de-energization of the electromagnet, the precompressed spring biases the armature away from the driving hub disengaging the armature teeth from the teeth of the driving hub. The electromagnet is provided with a shaped coil and a conventional ball bearing rotatably supports the driving hub to form an economical compact clutch.

  • Patent number: 4729339
Abstract: An excessive pressure differential indicating device for use with a filter in a liquid circulating system. The device has a reciprocable piston that reciprocates between a high pressure location, when the pressure differential is not excessive, and a low pressure location, when the pressure differential is excessive. The device has an indicator button with a magnetically conductive element, and the button is retained in a non-indicating position when the reciprocable piston is at the high pressure location by magnetic attraction between a permanent magnet carried by the reciprocable piston and the magnetically conductive element, a spring being provided to bias the indicator button to an indicating position when the reciprocable piston moves with the permanent magnet away from the indicator button to the low pressure location.

  • Patent number: 4720126
Abstract: A starter relay disposed in the housing of an electric starter of an internal combustion engine. The starter relay has a pair of stationary contact members electrically connected by a movable bar contact. The movable bar contact is mechanically linked to an annular relay armature which is axially displaceable by an annular electromagnetic coil. A coil spring produces a force biasing the relay armature away from the electromagnetic coil and the movable bar contact away from the contact members. In the preferred embodiment the operation of the power relay is transparent to the operation of the starter drive mechanism and the annular electromagnetic coil is the electromagnetic coil of the existing started drive mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4695735
Abstract: A starter drive for an internal combustion engine in which the starter drive is mounted within the starter housing, and an ignition key activated solenoid for energizing the motor of the starter drive is contained in a solenoid housing that is attached to the starter housing and is integral therewith. The solenoid has a solenoid coil and an annular armature, and upon the energization of the solenoid coil by the connection of such solenoid coil to the battery through the ignition key, the annular armature, which is normally spring biased away from the solenoid coil, is magnetically attracted thereto. This movement of the annular armature establishes an electrical contact between a first terminal, which is connected to the battery, and a second contact which is connected to the starter motor.

  • Patent number: 4645887
Abstract: A pressure differential bypass sensor switch that utilizes the change in piston of a permanent magnet that is carried by a reciprocable position to actuate the switching element of an axial travel switch by the change in magnetic forces that act on the switching element as a result of the change in position of the reciprocable piston and the permanent magnet. Opposite sides of the piston are exposed, respectively, to the high pressure and low pressure sides of a filter in a liquid circulating system, and the piston is normally positioned at the high pressure side of a passage in which it travels by a spring that acts on it from the low pressure side. As the filter becomes clogged the pressure drop across it and, therefore, across the piston will increase, and the piston is calibrated so that an excessive pressure drop will drive it to the low pressure side.
