  • Patent number: 4524854
Abstract: A method and apparatus for making an axially adjustable connection between a clutch shaft and an armature assembly to enable axial adjusting movement of the armature plate relative the inner body magnetic pole face to precisely set the air gap spacing through which an electromagnetic coil attracts the armature plate into frictional driving engagement with the inner body pole face. The hub of the armature assembly is placed upon the clutch shaft and a feeler gage is positioned between the pole face and the armature plate to establish the desired air gap spacing. An adjusting nut is threadedly advanced along a thread of the clutch shaft for progressive axial advance in the direction toward the inner body and engages the hub to maintain the armature assembly against air gap increasing movement away from the pole face.

  • Patent number: 4524629
Abstract: An engine starter drive adapted to engage an engine ring gear is disclosed. The drive has a clutch connection to connect the driving sleeve member to the outer sleeve member. The outer sleeve member further has an external helical spline with a notch. A control nut is threadably mounted on the helical splines of the outer sleeve member and has a spring loaded detent which engages the notch. The control nut is connected to the pinion gear by means of a barrel member. Rotating the power shaft causes the control nut to move along the helical splines to traverse the pinion gear into mesh with the engine ring gear and crank the engine. Further rotation of the power shaft causes the control nut to move axially to compress an annular resilient member which is interposed the barrel member and the control nut. Further compression of the resilient member causes torque to be transmitted from the power shaft to the pinion gear to rotate the ring gear.

  • Patent number: 4464576
Abstract: A starter drive for internal combustion engines. The starter drive is mounted within the starter housing and connected to the motor driven shaft. The shaft has a screw thread formed thereon near the armature of the starter and a cylindrical end portion. A screw sleeve member cooperatively engages the screw thread of the motor driven shaft. A ring armature member is centrally mounted to the threaded screw member. A unidirectional clutch member connects the screw sleeve member, the ring armature member and the pinion gear. An engaging member holds the ring armature member to the starter housing when the pinion gear is advanced axially along the motor driven shaft by the rotation of the motor when the motor is activated. Thus, the pinion gear engages the engine ring gear such that the pinion gear is held in mesh with the ring gear and the total motor torque is transmitted to the ring gear until the motor is deactivated.

  • Patent number: 4445596
Abstract: A compactly sized spring-applied electromagnetically released radial face friction brake, with a ball-pocket torque booster producing increased torque capacity is disclosed. The friction brake is released by energization of an electromagnetic coil attracting an axially movable armature, which nullifies the spring operator force to release the brake. The friction brake includes a driving hub having a plurality of bosses which engage a plurality of slots in a rotatable member to be braked. Thus, the driving force from the hub is distributed to the rotatable member so that both brittle and nonbrittle friction materials can be used to form the rotatable member. In addition, a collar is provided to limit the axial movement between the armature and the stationary ferromagnetic housing which contains the electromagnetic coil therein. Thus, as the friction surface on the rotatable member wears away, the magnetic air gap cannot become so great as to prevent brake disengagement.

  • Patent number: 4426952
Abstract: A differential pressure indicating device which is temperature compensated and includes a piston responsive to a pressure differential between inlet and outlet pressures. The piston is retained in a normal or first position by the force of a spring holding mechanism. The spring holding mechanism releases the piston at a predetermined excessive differential pressure condition to a second position. As this occurs, the piston actuates an indicating member to an indicating condition. A temperature sensitive bimetallic strip is provided to permit the piston to move to the second condition without activating the indicator member when the temperature of the fluid is below a predetermined temperature.

  • Patent number: 4395923
Abstract: An engine starter drive adapted to engage an engine ring gear having a tooth driving clutch member which cooperates with a tooth driven clutch member. The driven clutch member further comprises a helical screw shaft with two circular grooves. A control nut threadably mounted on the screw shaft has a spring loaded detent which engages the circular grooves. The control nut is connected to the pinion gear by means of a retaining cup. Rotating the screw shaft causes the control nut to move along the screw shaft to traverse the pinion into mesh with the engine ring gears and crank the engine. When the engine fires, the acceleration of the pinion causes the control nut to move back on the screw shaft until the detent engages the first circular groove. After the engine starts and the pinion rotates to a predetermined speed, the detent withdraws from the first groove in the screw shaft and the control nut withdraws the pinion gear from engaging the engine ring gear.

  • Patent number: 4311494
Abstract: The invention is a device which provides for separation of contaminants from a relatively high velocity stream of gas. The invention provides a first stage wherein the gas stream is decelerated and the contaminant particles are caused to separate from the air stream by interacting with a first surface. The interaction results in the particles to acquire a radial velocity vector and by virtue of the momentum of the contaminants particles. The contaminant particles are forced to the outer layer of the gas stream. The second stage of separation provides for further magnification of the radial velocity vector and also induces a slight tangential velocity component to the contaminant particle. By impacting the contaminants against a vane mounted within the gas stream, the contaminant particles, as a result of this impact, acquire a slight swirl or circular motion which causes the contaminant particles to be more localized.

  • Patent number: 4305002
Abstract: A two stage positive shift starter drive system for an internal combustion engine is disclosed. A pair of electrical switches are sequentially actuated by an actuator solenoid engaging the starter drive's pinion gear with the engine's ring gear. The first switch actuated after a predetermined displacement of the solenoid's armature applies electrical power to the cranking motor through a resistance connected in series with the cranking motor and connected in parallel with the solenoid's pull in coil. The resistance reduces the electrical power applied to the cranking motor and the potential across the solenoid pull-in coil thereby reducing the rotational speed and the engagement force applied to the pinion gear. The end of the armature travel closes the second switch applying full power to the cranking motor permitting normal cranking of the engine with the pinion gear fully engaged with the ring gear.

  • Patent number: 4300119
Abstract: A voltage generator which provides the biasing voltage to a telemetry transmitter positioned inside the tire of a moving vehicle is disclosed. The entire transmitting system, including the antenna, is self-contained within the pneumatic tire; and, accordingly, there is no need for connecting wires of any nature to be extended outside the tire containing the invention. The invention utilizes one of several available types of voltage generators to generate a voltage in response to the rotation of the tire as the vehicle moves within a coil. As is known, as a tire rotates along a road, the tire deflects and flattens along the area which contacts the road. The transducer used in the invention generates a voltage in response to this tire deflection. The voltage thus generated are processed and utilized to provide the biasing voltage for a transmitter.
