  • Patent number: 11747797
Abstract: A Multi-Purpose Dynamic Simulation and run-time Control platform includes a virtual process environment coupled to a physical process environment, where components/nodes of the virtual and physical process environments cooperate to dynamically perform run-time process control of an industrial process plant and/or simulations thereof. Virtual components may include virtual run-time nodes and/or simulated nodes. The MPDSC includes an I/O Switch which delivers I/O data between virtual and/or physical nodes, e.g., by using publish/subscribe mechanisms, thereby virtualizing physical I/O process data delivery. Nodes serviced by the I/O Switch may include respective component behavior modules that are unaware as to whether or not they are being utilized on a virtual or physical node. Simulations may be performed in real-time and even in conjunction with run-time operations of the plant, and/or simulations may be manipulated as desired (speed, values, administration, etc.).

  • Patent number: 11734213
Abstract: A process control input/output (I/O) device provides traditional I/O support with direct physical layers or interfaces associated with traditional process control communication protocols while at the same time supporting an advanced physical layer or other IP based physical layer and the communication protocols that run on top of them. In addition, the new I/O device is able to nest protocols inside of other protocols for use when protocols, such as safety protocols, require additional handshaking, confirmations, etc. Still further, the new I/O device includes hardware configurable capabilities that enable easy configuration of a process control system that uses multiple different physical layers, including those used by traditional process control protocols such as HART and FOUNDATION Fieldbus protocols, and more advanced physical layers, including those that are used by IP-based, Ethernet based, packet based and other types of advanced communication protocols.

  • Patent number: 11726447
Abstract: A quality review management system may be used to analyze the operation of manufacturing processes within a plant based on data collected by various data sources in the plant, such as batch executive applications, to automatically detect, store, and display exceptions within those processes for use by a quality review engineer to determine if the process operation meets certain quality standards. The quality review management system includes a configuration application that enables a user to create one or more exception rules, an exception engine that analyses process data using the rules to detect one or more exceptions within the process, and a review application that enables quality review personnel to review each determined exception for resolution purposes.

  • Patent number: 11726933
Abstract: An I/O server service interacts with multiple containerized controller services each implementing the same control routine to control the same portion of the same plant. The I/O server service may provide the same controller inputs to each of the containerized controller services (e.g., representing measurements obtained by field devices and transmitted by the field devices to the I/O server service). Each containerized controller service executes the same control routine to generate a set of controller outputs. The I/O server service receives each set of controller outputs and forwards an “active” set to the appropriate field devices. The I/O server service and other services, such as an orchestrator service, may continuously evaluate performance and resource utilization in the control system, and may dynamically activate and deactivate controller services as appropriate.

  • Patent number: 11704010
Abstract: Techniques for configuring and presenting multiple languages at a user interface executing in an operating environment of a process plant include configuring, in a configuration environment, a multi-language interface object to indicate a plurality of languages that may be presented at the user interface. The multi-language interface object includes a parameter whose value is changeable, within the operating environment, to indicate a desired language that is to be presented on the user interface. A configuration of the graphical display view that references the configured multi-language interface object is downloaded into the operating environment. Thus, during runtime, changes in the language utilized at the user interface are implemented without any additional downloads from or communications with the configuration environment.

  • Patent number: 11700232
Abstract: To secure communications from a process plant across a unidirectional data diode to a remote system, a sending device at the plant end publishes data across the diode to a receiving device at the remote end. The publication of various data is respectively in accordance with context information (e.g., identification of data sources, respective expected rate of data generation/arrival, etc.) that is descriptive of data sources of the plant and that is recurrently provided by the sending device across the diode. A recurrence interval may be based on a tolerance for lost data or another characteristic of an application, service, or consumer of data at the remote system. The publishing may leverage an industrial communication protocol (e.g., HART-IP) and/or a suitable general-purpose communication protocol (e.g., JSON).

  • Patent number: 11656594
Abstract: Techniques for enabling the configuration of a voting block for use in a process control system of a process plant are described. According to certain aspects, the voting block may have a voting scheme that dictates an output based on a set of inputs, where the voting block may be configured parametrically using various control selections that direct the behavior of the voting scheme. In particular, a bypass degrade selection may be specified for one or more inputs that controls whether a “bypass” input degrades the voting scheme, a status degrade selection may be specified for one or more inputs that controls whether a “bad” input degrades the voting scheme, and a trip enable selection may be specified that controls whether a trip occurs automatically under certain conditions. The control selections enable the voting blocks to be configured to conform with various specifications and other requirements.

  • Patent number: 11658966
Abstract: A system for validating a write command to a device in a process control system using biometric credentials and relationship attributes. • Patent number: 11656610
Abstract: The described techniques enable a skid communicator tool to quickly change network settings to those required by a particular skid or network in a process control environment with which a user of the tool wishes to establish communication. These techniques are helpful because skids and networks in process control environments often require different network settings for any device attempting to communicate with the skids or network, and a user often must manually load these network settings every time she wants to communicate with a different network or skid. By contrast, the techniques enable the skid communicator tool to seamlessly connect to, disconnect from, and reconnect to any of the skids or other networks requiring different network settings with minimal input from the user, thus enabling a user to easily move through and interact with different areas, units, or equipment of the process control environment.

  • Patent number: 11656609
Abstract: A first component of a process control loop (e.g., a controller or I/O gateway) monitors for and detects performance degradation of a second component of the loop by sending heartbeat messages to the second component via a diagnostic channel different from a control communications channel via which the first and second components communicate control messages for controlling an industrial process. The second component utilizes its control message interpreter to return received heartbeat messages to the first component via the diagnostic channel. The first component detects degradation of the second component when the round trip time (RTT) of a heartbeat message falls outside of an acceptable range of RTTs for the second component, and may suggest or automatically initiate mitigating actions. The first component may determine the average RTT or expected response time of the second component and acceptable range of variations based on a sample number of measured RTTs.

  • Patent number: 11650718
Abstract: Flexible graphic element objects in a process plant are configurable both in a run-time operating environment in which a process is being controlled and in a configuration environment. An instantiated flexible graphic element object may be a display view or may be another graphic element included on a display view. A graphic element object may be linked to and/or derived from another graphic element object, and changes to a particular graphic element object may be propagated to its derivations, e.g., according to a distribution policy. Changes to definitions corresponding to a particular graphic element object (e.g., to the definition of a graphic element attribute such as a shape, animation, event handler or property) may be overridden or modified in another object derived from the particular graphic element object. The modified derived object may be renamed and saved separately from the particular graphic element object.

  • Patent number: 11635980
Abstract: In one aspect, a micro-service control architecture provides a modular, flexible platform for designing, diagnosing, updating and/or expanding process control systems. Each service is containerized to provide portability and isolation from other components of the process control system. • Patent number: 11627175
Abstract: An edge gateway system securely delivers and exposes data generated by and/or related to a process plant for consumption by external systems, and includes a field-facing component that sends, to an edge-facing component of the system, a collection of data types defined based on configurations of the process plant and represented using a syntax that is native to the one or more external systems. The field-facing component streams process plant-related content data indicated by one or more interest lists to the edge-facing component, where the streamed data is expressed using the collection of data types. Each interest list may include multiple types of data (e.g., control, I/O, diagnostic, device, historical, etc.) that collectively represent a particular named entity of the plant. Accordingly, the streamed data is securely delivered and exposed, via the edge-facing component, to the external systems.
