  • Patent number: 11108893
Abstract: A field device includes components to communicate with a control and/or asset management system of a process control system or with other field devices using any of several different communication protocols such as several different internet protocol (IP) protocols. This architecture allows for a single version of a field device to be provided in automation or plant control systems that use any of these communication protocols, thus saving on inventory and product development costs. Moreover, the multi-protocol field device or a system using the multi-protocol field device can manage the asset (read and write parameterized data from and to the asset) using one protocol while at the same time communicating real-time process/factory automation information using a second and different protocol. Moreover, the field device may be able to communicate to other devices including other field devices and host devices using both of these protocols or other protocols for different purposes.

  • Patent number: 11092939
Abstract: The described techniques enable plant personnel to avoid the time and labor-intensive process associated with traditional design systems by enabling users to design, test, and “preview” control logic for controlling a process before downloading the control logic to a configuration database or process controller in the plant. This enables the quick testing and improvement of control logic during the design phase, avoiding the time-consuming iterative process of designing, downloading to a database, propagating to a live controller, and testing on the physical controller. It also separates testing of logic and non-logic aspects of a controller configuration, enabling a user to finish designing the control logic before downloading the configuration to the controller, where she only needs to test non-logic aspects of the configuration.

  • Patent number: 11080931
Abstract: In a method of providing virtual enhanced vision to a user of an augmented reality (AR) mobile device, it is determined that a first node associated with a map of a process control environment corresponds to a first real-world object currently within a field of view of a camera of the AR mobile device. A relationship between the first node and one or more other nodes is determined, with the relationship indicating that one or more other objects corresponding to other nodes are at least partially obscured by the first object. At least partially in response to determining the relationship, one or more digital models or images depicting the other object(s) is/are retrieved from memory. A display of the AR mobile device is caused to present the retrieved digital models or images to the user while the first object is in the field of view of the camera.

  • Patent number: 11073805
Abstract: A process control system having an external data server that provides process control data to external networks via one or more firewalls implements a cost-effective security mechanism that reduces or eliminates the ability of the external data server to be compromised by viruses or other security attacks. The security mechanism includes a DMZ gateway disposed outside of the process control network that connects to an external data server located within the process control network. A configuration engine is located within the process control network and configures the external data server to publish one or more preset or pre-established data views to the DMZ gateway, which then receives the data/events/alarms as defined by the data views from the control system automatically, without performing read and write requests to the external data server.

  • Patent number: 11038887
Abstract: A smart process control switch can implement a lockdown routine to lockdown its communication ports exclusively for use by devices having known physical addresses, enabling the smart process control switch to prevent new, potentially hostile, devices from communicating with other devices to which the smart process control switch is connected. Further, the smart process control switch can implement an address mapping routine to identify “known pairs” of physical and network addresses for each device communicating via a port of the smart process control switch. Thus, even if a new hostile device is able to spoof a known physical address in an attempt to bypass locked ports, the smart process control switch can detect the hostile device by checking the network address of the hostile device against the expected network address for the “known pair.

  • Patent number: 11009859
Abstract: To provide a trusted, secure, and immutable record of storage operations executed by a storage center for storing measurement data provided by a process plant, techniques are described for utilizing a distributed ledger. When a data contributor such as a process plant generates measurement data, an encrypted version of a set of measurement data is transmitted to a storage center for secure storage of the measurement data. In some instances, the data contributor divides the set of measurement data into several subsets and transmits each subset of encrypted measurement data to a different storage center. Furthermore, the storage center generates a transaction for the storage operation which is recorded in a distributed ledger. When a data subscriber retrieves the encrypted measurement data from a storage center, the data subscriber can verify the authenticity of the data based on the information recorded in the distributed ledger.

  • Patent number: 10962962
Abstract: The described techniques enable a skid communicator tool to quickly change network settings to those required by a particular skid or network in a process control environment with which a user of the tool wishes to establish communication. These techniques are helpful because skids and networks in process control environments often require different network settings for any device attempting to communicate with the skids or network, and a user often must manually load these network settings every time she wants to communicate with a different network or skid. By contrast, the techniques enable the skid communicator tool to seamlessly connect to, disconnect from, and reconnect to any of the skids or other networks requiring different network settings with minimal input from the user, thus enabling a user to easily move through and interact with different areas, units, or equipment of the process control environment.

  • Patent number: 10915081
Abstract: An edge gateway system securely delivers and exposes data generated by and/or related to a process plant for consumption by external systems, and includes a field-facing component that stores interest lists indicating the particular data that is allowed to be exposed by the field-facing component. Each interest list is defined (e.g., manually and/or automatically) in accordance with an exposable data type system extracted from (in some cases, multiple different) configurations of the process plant, and may include multiple types of data (e.g., control, I/O, diagnostic, device, historical, etc.) that collectively represent a particular named entity of the plant. The field-facing component obtains the process plant-related data indicated by the interest lists, and provides the obtained field content data to an edge-facing component of the edge gateway system for exposure to external systems, for example, by streaming and/or publishing the obtained data to the edge-facing component.
