  • Patent number: 9958362
Abstract: A sample preparation device for electron microscopy (EM) that is configured to eliminate user-to-user variations and environment contaminations, which are often present in the conventional method of sample preparation. The device not only provides a means for evenly and reproducibly delivering a fluid or sample to an EM grid, but also provides a means for sealing the EM grid in an air-tight chamber and delivering air-sensitive samples to the EM grid. The platform may comprise readily fabricated glass chips with features integrated to preserve the integrity of the sample grid and to facilitate its extraction. The methods may eliminate the element of user dependent variability and thus improve the throughput, reproducibility and translation of these methods.

  • Patent number: 9919280
Abstract: Polyelectrolyte complex microcapsules are prepared by a novel template- and surfactant-free method. The microcapsules are produced spontaneously by ultrasonically spraying a solution of complex into a hot water reservoir which enhances diffusion and relaxation of polymer. The size and wall thickness of microcapsules are precisely controlled. Encapsulation of polymers and nanoparticles by mixing them with polyelectrolyte solutions is demonstrated.

  • Patent number: 9916927
Abstract: Electrically insulating Al2O3—SiO2 thin coatings have been deposited on long-length 316 stainless steel (SS) tape using a reel-to-reel continuous sol-gel dip coating process for co-winding insulation into YBCO pancake coils, a high temperature superconductor magnet technology. Coatings with a thickness of ˜2 ?m are achieved after just one dip with a tape withdrawal speed of ˜16 mm/s (1 m/min) and a calcination at 700° C. The coatings were measured to have a room-temperature breakdown voltage of about 100 V, corresponding to a dc dielectric strength of about 50 MV/m. Consequently, this process has low cost and high throughput and produces a thin electrical insulation with excellent thermal, dielectric, and mechanical properties. A new technique has been developed in the coating process to mitigate coating buildup near the edges of the tape.

  • Publication number: 20180052952
Abstract: The orthogonal space random walk (OSRW) algorithm is generalized to be the orthogonal space tempering (OST) method via the introduction of the orthogonal space sampling temperature. A double-integration recursion method enables practically efficient and robust OST free energy calculations, augmented by a ?-dynamics approach. The double-integration OST method performs alchemical free energy simulations, to calculate the free energy difference between benzyl phosphonate and difluorobenzyl phosphonate in aqueous solution, to estimate the solvation free energy of the octanol molecule, and to predict the nontrivial Barnase-Barstar binding affinity change induced by the Barnase N58A mutation. The DI-OST method robustly enables practically efficient free energy predictions, particularly when strongly coupled slow environmental transitions are involved. A classical set of p38? MAP Kinase inhibitors are also employed as a test bed for evaluating relative binding affinity calculation methods.
