Abstract: A system of surge suppressor units is connected at multiple locations on a power transmission and distribution grid to provide grid level protection against various disturbances before such disturbances can reach or affect facility level equipment. The surge suppressor units effectively prevent major voltage and current spikes from impacting the grid. In addition, the surge suppressor units include various integration features which provide diagnostic and remote reporting capabilities required by most utility operations. As such, the surge suppressor units protect grid level components from major events such as natural geomagnetic disturbances (solar flares), extreme electrical events (lightning) and human-generated events (EMPs) and cascading failures on the power grid.
Abstract: A vehicle system may include a controller configured to receive a height selection indicating a vehicle height from a plurality of vehicle height options, detect, via a first sensor, a low clearance structure and determine a clearance height, compare the vehicle height with the clearance height; and generate an alert in response to the vehicle height being greater than the clearance height.

Abstract: A device and method for smoothing a surface of an article formed at least partially from plastic, in particular a component of a motor vehicle, is provided. The method includes arranging the article in a vacuum-tight chamber, reducing the pressure in the chamber to a partial vacuum of not more than 50 kPa, in particular not more than 34 kPa, and admitting acetone into the chamber. Some of the acetone is vaporized and the vapor is precipitated on the surface of the article. In one form, the precipitated vapor acts on the article for at least 1 minute. The method further includes opening the chamber, so that at least the ambient pressure prevails in the chamber and removing the article from the chamber.

Abstract: Methods of processing an air-quenchable aluminum alloy component are provided. The method may include solution heat treating the component, air-quenching the component, and artificially aging the component to a yield strength of at least 200 MPa. The air-quenching may include cooling at a rate of 6° C./s to 25° C./s. The solution heat treatment may include heat treating the component at a temperature of 520° C. to 540° C. and the artificial aging step may include heat treating the component at 235° C. to 255° C. for 0.5 to 2 hours. The disclosed methods may produce a high strength (e.g., over 200 MPa) and high bendability (e.g., r/t ratio up to 0.3) component that does not significantly distort during the quenching process. The disclosed methods may be used to produce structural components having complex shapes, such as multiple, non-coplanar mating surface, while staying within predetermined tolerances.

Abstract: An exemplary battery assembly includes a shield having a floor and walls extending transversely away from the floor. The shield provides a cavity configured to receive a battery pack of an electrified vehicle. The cavity is larger than the traction battery pack so that there is a gap between at least some of the walls and the traction battery pack within the cavity. An exemplary shielding method includes securing a shield to a vehicle frame to enclose a traction battery pack held within a cavity of the shield.

Abstract: Systems and methods are described for monitoring the brake performance of a vehicle. A modeled deceleration of the vehicle may be calculated based on a master cylinder pressure of the vehicle brake system. The modeled deceleration may be compared to a measured deceleration of the vehicle. A notification may be initiated when a difference between the modeled deceleration and the measured deceleration exceeds a threshold.
