  • Patent number: 9427460
Abstract: Methods and compositions for inhibiting tumorigenicity both in vitro and in vivo in a subject in need thereof, comprising administering an effective amount of an anti-miR-494 nucleic acid construct sufficient to target one or more tumor suppressor genes (TSGs) are described. Activation of the ERK1/2 pathway is a major determinant of diverse cellular processes and cancer development and is responsible for the transcription of several important miRNAs. Described herein is a link between the ERK1/2 pathway and BIM expression through miR-494. This ERK1/2 pathway regulates apoptosis and cell proliferation through miR-494 and mechanisms responsible for TRAIL resistance. Materials and methods related to the study and treatment of cancer are described.

  • Patent number: 9431671
Abstract: Provided is a microbial fuel cell (MFC). The MFC includes a microfluidic element having an inlet portion and an outlet portion for intake and discharge of a culture fluid containing cells and a microchannel portion for capturing the cells and interconnecting the inlet portion and the outlet portion, a microprobe-array element having microprobes as anodes for extracting electrons produced during a metabolic process of the cells, and delivering the extracted electrons to an external circuit outside the cells, and a cathode for delivering the electrons used in the external circuit to an electron acceptor outside the cells. The microprobes penetrate the microfluidic element and are inserted into a plurality of single cells captured by the microchannel portion when the microfluidic element and the microprobe-array element are coupled together. The microprobes are separated from the single cells when the microfluidic element and the microprobe-array element are separated from each other.

  • Patent number: 9428157
Abstract: A drum brake is provided that improves the direction of the actuating forces to reduce stress, improve efficiency and permit thicker brake linings. First and second brake shoes each have a first end pivotally coupled to a brake spider. First and second cam followers are disposed at corresponding second ends of the brake shoes. A cam engages the cam followers with movement of the cam causing the brake shoes to move between positions of engagement and disengagement with a braking surface. The cam followers are offset such that a center of the first cam follower is disposed at a first distance from a center axis of the brake and a center of the second cam follower is disposed at a second distance from the center axis with the first distance different from the second distance so as to improve the direction of the cam force vector.

  • Publication number: 20160248377
Abstract: An injection locked frequency divider is disclosed. The injection-locked frequency divider includes a sub-harmonic injection-locked oscillator, a reference clock divider, a counter, and a variable load resistor control unit. The sub-harmonic injection-locked oscillator has variable load resistors that are adjusted in response to a resistance adjustment signal, and, when oscillation frequency determined based on the magnitudes of the variable load resistors is a sub-harmonic of an injection signal, outputs signals having the oscillation frequency as divided output signals. The reference clock divider generates a count-enable signal from a reference clock signal according to a reference division ratio. The counter generates divided output count signals based on the divided output signals in response to the count-enable signal.

  • Patent number: 9421732
Abstract: Air-stable coated particles, which include an oxidizable core having a coating substantially encompassing the oxidizable core, where the coating comprises a first organic ligand and/or a second organic ligand, are disclosed and described. The coated particles can also be substantially free of an oxide layer, especially oxide layers around the oxidizable core. As such, the coating of organic ligand(s) acts as a protective or passivating coating. The air-stable coated particles can be formed via a particle size-reduction process. An oxidizable particulate can be crushed and contacted with a first organic ligand and subsequently with a second organic ligand. The process conditions are maintained such that an oxide layer is preempted from forming on the oxidizable core. Such materials can be effective as high energy density additives for various fuels, pyrotechnic, ionic liquids, and rocket propellant applications and for biomedical applications.
