Abstract: Methods, compositions, and systems for detecting gamma radiation is disclosed and described. A compound for detecting gamma radiation can comprise a conjugated imidazole having the following structure: [Formula I] where at least one of R1, R2, and R3 are conjugated organic groups. Additionally, the conjugated imidazole can be capable of reacting with a radical or ion formed by the reaction of gamma radiation with a radical generating component such as a halogen solvent to decrease a molar extinction coefficient of the conjugated imidazole in the visible light region or to quench fluorescence of the conjugated imidazole. As a sensor (100), a radiation detection indicator (108) can indicate the change in molar extinction coefficient or fluorescence of the conjugated imidazole material (120) upon exposure to gamma radiation.

Abstract: A method for reconstructing an image of an object that includes a plurality of image elements. The method includes accessing image data associated with a plurality of image elements, and reconstructing an image of the object by optimizing an objective function, where the objective function is optimized by iteratively solving a nested sequence of approximate optimization problems. The algorithm is composed of nested iterative loops, in which an inner loop iteratively optimizes an objective function approximating the outer loop objective function, and an outer loop that utilizes the solution of the inner loop to optimize the original objective function.

Abstract: In a method of detecting a specific object using a multi-dimensional image including the specific object, with respect to each window slide of the image subjected to window sliding by applying a previously generated 3D cube filter, data of an area corresponding to the window sliding is normalized in a previously defined specific form. After the corresponding part of the normalized data is assigned to each cell in the 3D cube filter, a volume of the cell is then calculated, thereby expressing the volumes of the cells as one volumetric feature vector having a volumetric feature. The volumetric feature vector is applied to a classifier so as to decide whether or not the data of the area corresponding to the window slide corresponds to the specific object.

Abstract: An acceleration-triggered or shock-triggered, smart, tunable MEMS switch that may function as both a classic accelerometer and an acceleration threshold detector. A parallel element MEMS device has a stationary and a movable element forming a capacitor. Varying acceleration moves the movable member with respect to the stationary member, thereby changing the capacitance of the device. The capacitance varying may be used, in cooperation with appropriate circuitry, to provide a signal representative of instantaneous acceleration. By applying a biasing voltage, the movable element may be positioned in a predetermined fashion such that acceleration of a predetermined magnitude causes the movable element to pull in (snap down). The movable and stationary elements may function as a switch such that when the predetermined acceleration or shock level occurs, electrodes close, a current flows between the elements so that an external device such as an air bag may be activated.
