  • Patent number: 8956165
Abstract: Devices and methods are provided for combining the handle of a surgical instrument with a force feedback generator, able to create resistance to motion similar to that encountered in a real operating environment. The working end of the surgical instrument is recreated in a virtual environment and manipulated by the modified handle through the force feedback generator. Actions of the instrument handle modify a model and display of the virtual environment and transmit a haptic response back to the handle. The devices and methods provide a means for repeatedly performing maneuvers that accurately simulate the actual instrument, but in the virtual environment. The virtual environment is modeled to accurately simulate the use of the instrument including manipulation of and collisions with other virtual objects, such as surgical thread or internal tissues. Training and assessment tools are also provided that coach or assess a user's proficiency with the instrument.

  • Patent number: 8956379
Abstract: The present invention relates to devices and systems that alter intracranial compliance, cerebral blood flow and/or intracranial pressure pulsatility/waveform by oscillating the contraction and expansion of a compressible composition within the cranial or spinal cavities such that they increase intracranial capacity. The contraction and expansion of the compressible composition in the oscillating compliance devices can be due to an individual's intracranial pressure, the result of the expansion and compression of a reservoir which is mediated by the contractility of the heart or driven by a pump gaited to a biorhythm. The invention also relates to methods for protecting an individual's brain from abnormal arterial pulsations and for altering an individual's cerebral blood flow using the devices and systems of the invention.

  • Patent number: 8958649
Abstract: Various embodiments are directed to generating video data using temporally offset image data samples having disparate exposure times. Synthetic samples are generated for each of the pixels at a particular time period by computing, for each synthetic sample, a combined intensity of the captured samples that fall within the time period. Synthetic samples from adjacent pixels are grouped and image data in different groups is compared to identify matching groups. Video frames are constructed by combining image data from the captured samples based upon the matched images.

  • Patent number: 8956835
Abstract: Methods are provided for producing biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) with desired geometry, molecular mass, mechanical and/or physical-chemical properties from glycerol, an inexpensive carbon source and byproduct of the biodiesel industry. Microorganisms capable of converting carbon to PHA can be used to convert biodiesel-glycerol to poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) or other monomer or copolymer PHAs via fermentation. The microorganisms are cultured in a medium comprising glycerol as a primary carbon source and one or more low molecular mass organic acids as a secondary carbon source. Biomass can be harvested from the culture medium and crude PHA extracted and purified, thereby recovering purified PHA with the desired property. After PHA isolation, a nucleating agent can be added to improve certain physical-chemical properties of the PHA, e.g., crystallization temperature, to enhance performance of the PHA during injection molding.

  • Patent number: 8957681
Abstract: A magnetic resonance imaging (“MRI”) system and method for producing an image of a subject with the MRI system in which signal contributions of water and fat are separated are provided. A plurality of in-phase echoes formed at a plurality of different echo times are sampled to acquire k-space data. The in-phase echoes include signal contributions from water and fat that are in-phase with each other. The signal contributions from water and fat are then separated by fitting only those echo signals that are in-phase echo signals to a signal model that models a fat spectrum as including multiple resonance peaks. From these signal contributions, an image of the subject depicting a desired amount of signal contribution from water and a desired amount of signal contribution is produced.

  • Publication number: 20150044770
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for selective cell attachment/detachment, cell patternization and cell harvesting by means of near infrared rays. More particularly, conducting polymers or metal oxides having exothermic characteristics upon irradiation of near infrared light is used as a cell culture scaffold, thus selectively attaching/detaching cells without an enzyme treatment. The scaffold has an effect of promoting proliferation or differentiation of stem cells, and therefore, can be used as a stem cell culture scaffold. The scaffold enables cell attachment/detachment without temporal or spatial restrictions, thus enabling cell patternization.
