  • Patent number: 8426620
Abstract: Disclosed is a method for preparing a furan fatty acid, more particularly a method for preparing a furan fatty acid by heat-treating 7,10-dihydroxy-8(E)-octadecenoic acid (DOD) in hexane. The present disclosure provides a simple method for producing 7,10-EODA from a dihydroxyl fatty acid precursor. Considering the difficulties in purifying natural furan fatty acids because of easy attack by peroxyl radicals and small quantity and the complicated multiple steps for chemical synthesis, the present disclosure provides a useful way to produce the biologically activity F-acid cost-effectively in large scale.

  • Patent number: 8426630
Abstract: A multi-step method for the continuous synthesis of ibuprofen or a synthetic precursor of ibuprofen is provided that does not require any intermediate purification or isolation steps and uses reagents compatible with downstream reactions. According to some embodiments, a method is provided wherein isobutylbenzene and a propionyl compound may be converted into a first product in a first Friedel Crafts acylation reaction. The first product may then be converted into a second product in a 1,2-aryl migration reaction. Finally, the second product may be converted into ibuprofen in a hydrolysis reaction. The present invention also provides a method wherein only the first and second reaction steps or only the second and third reaction steps are performed. An apparatus is also provided having two or more microreactors and two or more junctions in particular arrangements for the synthesis of ibuprofen or a synthetic precursor of ibuprofen.

  • Patent number: 8428093
Abstract: Semiconductor laser array devices capable of emitting mid- to long-wavelength infrared (i.e., 4-12 ?m) radiation are provided. The devices include a quantum cascade laser (QCL) structure comprising one or more active cores; an optical confinement structure; a cladding structure, and a plurality of laterally-spaced trench regions extending transversely through the cladding and optical confinement structures, and partially into the QCL structure. The trench regions define a plurality of laterally-spaced interelement regions separated by element regions in the laser array device. The element regions are characterized by a non-uniform structure across their widths. As a result of this structural non-uniformity, array modes composed of coupled first-order lateral modes of the element regions are preferentially suppressed relative to array modes composed of coupled fundamental lateral modes of the element regions.

  • Patent number: 8425493
Abstract: An implantable medication delivery device that is highly space efficient and can reliably and safely deliver controlled medication doses to a target site. The system includes a variable volume medication reservoir that is exposed to an ambient pressure equal to the ambient pressure at a system outlet port. A pump/valve subassembly is provided to draw medication from the reservoir and force a medication dose along a fluid transfer passageway to the outlet port. The pump/valve subassembly incorporates a safety mechanism, e.g., a balanced valve, which normally blocks medication flow to the outlet port and opens only in response to a pump induced unbalancing force. A protective shell is also disclosed for protecting the ambient reservoir.

  • Publication number: 20130097391
Abstract: Critical sections of multi-threaded programs, normally protected by locks providing access by only one thread, are speculatively executed concurrently by multiple threads with elision of the lock acquisition and release. Upon a completion of the speculative execution without actual conflict as may be identified using standard cache protocols, the speculative execution is committed, otherwise the speculative execution is squashed. Speculative execution with elision of the lock acquisition, allows a greater degree of parallel execution in multi-threaded programs with aggressive lock usage.

  • Publication number: 20130096428
Abstract: An access system and method for obtaining access to the interior vascular structures or other regions or collections of fluid or fluid-filled cavities inside the body. The system and method provides for injection of contrast agents (to confirm ideal position or condition), the passage of guide wires, and the eventual catheterization of the heart and other parts of the body via the pathway established through the puncture of a femoral artery. The system and method provides the ability to inject a contrast material and pass a guide wire through the same introducer device simultaneously (without necessarily moving it or removing any parts), with the device designed to prevent the backflow of the contrast material through the guide wire port during the contrast injection process The ideal location of access in the vein or artery can be seen by injecting contrast from a needle inside the structure and then using fluoroscopy.
