  • Publication number: 20130041449
Abstract: The present embodiments are directed to implantable electrode arrays having virtual electrodes. The virtual electrodes may improve the resolution of the implantable electrode array without the burden of corresponding complexity of electronic circuitry and wiring. In a particular embodiment, a virtual electrode may include one or more passive elements to help steer current to a specific location between the active electrodes. For example, a passive element may be a metalized layer on a substrate that is adjacent to, but not directly connected to an active electrode. In certain embodiments, an active electrode may be directly coupled to a power source via a conductive connection. Beneficially, the passive elements may help to increase the overall resolution of the implantable array by providing additional stimulation points without requiring additional wiring or driver circuitry for the passive elements.

  • Publication number: 20130040285
Abstract: Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is an important cause of disease in infants and immune-compromised adults. Most infants infected with CMV are not promptly identified because of the absence of symptoms. It has been discovered that an assay based on the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for testing of saliva specimens for CMV is rapid, accurate, and inexpensive. Some versions of the assay employ primers that are specific for sequences flanking the highly conserved major envelope glycoprotein B or the highly conserved immediate early 2 exon 5 genes. The assay exceeds the standard rapid culture technique in accuracy, speed, and economy. When the assay is performed on dried saliva, it loses no significant amount of accuracy, and is surprisingly much more sensitive than a PCR assay using dried blood. This assay will permit broader testing to detect and intervene in congenital CMV infection, potentially avoiding numerous cases of associated disease.

  • Publication number: 20130041592
Abstract: This invention provides a quantitative analysis of glycan biosynthesis along meta pathways using computer simulation for comparing a computer generated spectrum to experimental data to quantitatively track the biosynthesis. Computer simulating the mass spectra of isotopic detection of aminosugars with glutamine experiments allows modeling the glycan biosynthesis over time, via changes in the 14N and 15N isotope abundance levels, to estimate the relative abundance of molecules involved in glycan biosynthesis, from experimental mass spectra. Gradient search optimization is used to maximize the coefficient of determination between the experimental spectrum and the simulated spectrum. These relative abundances are then fed into a pathway simulation model to analyze glycan biosynthesis.

  • Patent number: 8374371
Abstract: A miniature microphone comprising a diaphragm compliantly suspended over an enclosed air volume having a vent port is provided, wherein an effective stiffness of the diaphragm with respect to displacement by acoustic vibrations is controlled principally by the enclosed air volume and the port. The microphone may be formed using silicon microfabrication techniques and has sensitivity to sound pressure substantially unrelated to the size of the diaphragm over a broad range of realistic sizes. The diaphragm is rotatively suspend for movement through an arc in response to acoustic vibrations, for example by beams or tabs, and has a surrounding perimeter slit separating the diaphragm from its support structure. The air volume behind the diaphragm provides a restoring spring force for the diaphragm. The microphone's sensitivity is related to the air volume, perimeter slit, and stiffness of the diaphragm and its mechanical supports, and not the area of the diaphragm.
