Abstract: A composition can be used to treat water containing nitrogen compounds and phosphorus compounds. The composition includes iron filings, clay particles, aluminum particles, and sand particles. The iron filings, clay particles, and aluminum particles act to remove nitrogen compounds and phosphorus compounds from water. Specifically, the clay particles attract the nitrogen compounds and the phosphorus compounds to be absorbed onto a surface of the iron filings and the clay particles. The aluminum particles react with the nitrogen compounds via an oxidation reaction to form ammonia compounds and react with the phosphorus compounds to produce aluminum phosphate. The relationship between the iron filings, clay particles, and aluminum particles remove nitrogen and phosphorus compounds from water and recover the compounds in usable forms, namely, ammonia and aluminum phosphate.

Abstract: This disclosure provides methods of using BAF complex modulating compounds as inhibitors of BAF-mediated transcription in target cells. The BAF complex modulating compounds include 12-membered macrolactam compounds that can target a BAF-specific subunit (e.g., ARID1A) to prevent nucleosomal positioning, relieving transcriptional repression of HIV-1. The subject methods can provide for reversal of latency of HIV-1 in cells in vitro or in vivo. Use of the macrolactam BAF complex modulating compounds represent a method of HIV latency reversal with a unique mechanism of action, which can be optionally combined with other Latency Reversal Agents to improve reservoir targeting. The subject methods can be utilized in conjunction with any convenient methods of treating HIV or HIV latency, including methods related to immune system activation, antiretroviral therapies and/or anti-HIV agents.

Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure are directed to methods and/or apparatuses involving modifying flow and/or concentration of an agent being injected for characterizing a vascular system. As may be implemented in accordance with one or more embodiments, a liquid including an agent is injected into a vascular system, by dynamically modulating a flow rate of the agent being injected over a range of flow rates. The vascular system is characterized based on a response of the vascular system to the dynamic modulation. In some implementations, such an approach involves using an injector that operates to separately control the rate at which an agent and other liquid such as saline are injected. These approaches can be implemented with modulation schemes using one or more of a variety of functions.

Abstract: Herein reported are new tricyclic cytidine compounds, such as 8-diethylamino-tC (8-DEA-tC), that respond to DNA and/or RNA duplex formation with up to a 20-fold increase in fluorescent quantum yield as compared with the free nucleoside, depending on neighboring bases. This turn-on response to duplex formation is by far the greatest of any reported nucleoside analogue that can participate in Watson-Crick base pairing. Measurements of the quantum yield of 8-DEA-tC mispaired with adenosine and, separately, opposite an abasic site show that there is almost no fluorescence increase without the formation of correct Watson-Crick hydrogen bonds. Kinetic isotope effects from the use of deuterated buffer show that the duplex protects 8-DEA-tC against quenching by excited state proton transfer. DFT calculations provide a rationale for the observed photophysical properties that is dependent on duplex integrity and the electronic structure of the analogue.
