Abstract: A computer-assisted method for identifying functionalities to add to an organism-specific metabolic network to enable a desired biotransformation in a host includes accessing reactions from a universal database to provide stoichiometric balance, identifying at least one stoichiometrically balanced pathway at least partially based on the reactions and a substrate to minimize a number of non-native functionalities in the production host, and incorporating the at least one stoichiometrically balanced pathway into the host to provide the desired biotransformation. A representation of the metabolic network as modified can be stored.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a biomolecule-based electronic device in which the biomolecule with redox potential is directly immobilized on the substrate. The present invention enables to excellently exhibit the capability of a protein-based bio-memory device in which it is preferable to use the substrate on which cysteine-introduced recombinant proteins are effectively immobilized and a self-assembled layer (SAM) is fabricated. It becomes realized that a redox potential is regulated using intrinsic redox potential of the protein dependent on applied voltage. The present invention provides a novel operating method in which three potentials are applied throughout four steps. The present invention has some advantages of fabricating a protein layer in a convenient manner and inducing electron transfer by fundamental electrochemical or electronic operation.

Abstract: Disclosed are dual-phase cement precursor systems and associated methods and kits. The cement precursor systems comprises at least first and second phases each containing a calcium phosphate compound. When mixed, the first and second cement precursor phases form a biocompatible cement. The disclosed systems include an organic acid in an amount effective to enhance the working time of the cement precursor composition, and also include a setting accelerator. Abstract: Semiconductor devices having at least one barrier layer with a wide energy band gap are disclosed. In some embodiments, a semiconductor device includes at least one active layer composed of a first compound, and at least one barrier layer composed of a second compound and disposed on at least one surface of the at least one active layer. The at least one barrier layer may have a wider energy band gap than an energy band gap of the at least one active layer. The compositions of the first and second compounds may be controlled to adjust the difference between Fermi functions for conduction band and valence band in the at least one active layer.

These “signature peptides” function as analytical surrogates. Abstract: A compound for absorbing sunlight and converting the sunlight into electrical energy, which is formed by coupling a fullerene with at least one or more triarylamine derivatives. The fullerene is selected from among those having carbon numbers C60, C70, C78, C82 and C84, and the triarylamine derivatives are coupled with at least one or more aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons and are also coupled with a dopant. A method of manufacturing the compound includes steps of synthesizing a fullerene derivative, synthesizing fullerene-triarylamine, wherein a fullerene-triarylamine adduct is prepared by coupling the fullerene derivative with a triarylamine derivative, preparing an adduct solution by dissolving the fullerene-triarylamine adduct in an organic solvent, and conducting a doping reaction by adding an acid dropwise slowly to the adduct solution.

Abstract: Apparatuses and methods are provided for measuring the critical flicker fusion frequency of a subject. The apparatus in one aspect comprises two or more light sources, each flickering at a different predetermined frequency. The subject selects one light source from an array of light sources defining a first range of frequencies, the selection representing the light source of lowest frequency that appears as fused to the subject. The frequencies of the light sources are adjusted to second predetermined frequencies defining a second range. The subject selects the light source of lowest frequency that appears as fused to the subject. The frequency value of the second selection can be assigned as the subject's critical flicker fusion frequency.
Abstract: A method for treating an ocular disorder characterized by the defect or absence of a normal gene in the ocular cells of a human or animal subject involves administering to the subject by subretinal injection an effective amount of a recombinant adeno-associated virus carrying a nucleic acid sequence encoding the normal gene under the control of a promoter sequence which expresses the product of the gene in the ocular cells. The ocular cells are preferably retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells, and the gene is preferably an RPE-specific gene, e.g., RPE65. The promoter is one that can express the gene product in the RPE cells. Compositions for subretinal administration are useful in this method.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for fabricating a magnetic pattern and a method for manufacturing a patterned media through fabrication of the magnetic pattern. Abstract: An optical coagulation monitor and the method of monitoring blood coagulation status are disclosed. The method includes positioning a sample probe containing an optical fiber within a circulating blood; transmitting a low-coherence light through the optical fiber into the blood; detecting dynamic light scatter signals generated by the blood within a coherence volume and received through the optical fiber; analyzing the dynamic light scatter signals in comparison to a predetermined coagulation criterion; and reporting the coagulation status of the blood. The method can be used for monitoring blood coagulation status in vivo or in vitro in real time. Further disclosed is a method of determining blood clotting time in vitro using the optical coagulation monitor.
