  • Publication number: 20090201221
Abstract: Examples of the present invention include antennas and scattering elements having a metamaterial cloak configured so as to reduce effects on the operating parameters of a nearby antenna. For example, an antenna has an antenna frequency, and a cloak is disposed around the antenna having a frequency range in which the cloak is operative. The antenna frequency can lie outside the frequency range of the cloak, whereas the frequency of a second antenna lies within the frequency range of the cloak. In this case, the antenna is cloaked relative to the second antenna.

Abstract: Isolation and purification of stem cells from within a bulk sarcoma tumor. These cells express the marker genes of pluripotent embryonic stem cells, Stat 3, Oct 3/4, and Nanog. A subset of these cells show the surface marker of mesenchymal stem cells Stro-1, as well as express attributes of mesodermal, ectodermal, and endodermal differentiation. The isolation, purification and characterization of these stem cells now provides the ideal target for the development of highly effective therapies against tumors.

  • Publication number: 20090203004
Abstract: The present invention provides methods for predicting tolerance associated with 6-mercaptopurine drug treatment of an immune-mediated gastrointestinal disorder such as inflammatory bowel disease. In particular, the present invention provides methods for predicting a patient's risk of an adverse drug reaction (or tolerance) to a 6-mercaptopurine drug by genotyping a patient at a polymorphic site in at least one gene selected from the group consisting of a xanthine dehydrogenase (XDH) gene, molybdenum cofactor sulfurase (MOCOS) gene, and aldehyde oxidase (AOX) gene. The present invention further provides methods for optimizing therapeutic efficacy in a patient receiving a 6-mercaptopurine drug by determining whether the patient should be given an alternative drug based on the presence or absence of a polymorphism in at least one of the XDH, MOCOS, and AOX genes.

  • Publication number: 20090203221
Abstract: An apparatus and method for incorporating a composition into a substrate using neutral beams are provided to repeatedly process an oxide layer using the neutral beams having low energy to minimize electrical damage to the oxide layer and improve characteristics of the oxide layer. The apparatus is mounted in a plasma generating chamber, and includes: an ion beam generating gas inlet, which injects a gas for generating ion beams; an ion source, which generates the ion beams having a polarity from the gas introduced through the ion beam generating gas inlet; a grid assembly, which is installed on one end of the ion source; a reflector, which is aligned with the grid assembly and converts the ion beams to the neutral beams; and a stage, on which the substrate is placed on a traveling path of the neutral beams. Formation of the oxide layer and application of the neutral beams are repeatedly performed on the substrate so as to improve the characteristics of the oxide layer.

  • Publication number: 20090204637
Abstract: A computerized annotation method achieves real-time operation and better optimization properties while preserving the architectural advantages of the generative modeling approach. A novel clustering algorithm for objects is represented by discrete distributions, or bags of weighted vectors, thereby minimizing the total within cluster distance, a criterion used by the k-means algorithm. A new mixture modeling method, the hypothetical local mapping (HLM) method, is used to efficiently build a probability measure on the space of discrete distributions. Thus, in accord with the invention every image is characterized by a statistical distribution. The profiling model specifies a probability law for distributions directly.
