Abstract: There are provided lamella structured thin films having ultralow dielectric constants and high hardness, and the method for manufacturing the same. In the lamella structured thin film, silica layers and air layers are alternately and repeatedly stacked on the surface of a wafer in the vertical direction. The method of manufacturing the lamella structured thin film includes, agitating silica sol solution containing surfactant and silica precursor, spin-coating the solution on silicon wafer, aging the wafer, and annealing the wafer to remove the surfactant and organic materials from the wafer. The lamella structured thin film has excellent mechanical strength and high chemical stability, and in particular, has significantly low dielectric constant of no more than 2.5 and high hardness. In the method of manufacturing the lamella structured thin film, semiconductor processes can be made simple and economical since only pure silica is used and no additionally surface treatment is performed.

  • Publication number: 20090208936
Abstract: We report the real-time monitoring of protein-protein interactions without labeling either of the two interacting proteins, posing minimum effects on the binding properties of the proteins. In particular, the methods provide protein/aptamer complexes to probe the interactions in a competitive assay where the binding of an aptamer to its target protein is altered by a second protein that interacts with the target protein. Two signal transduction strategies, fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) and fluorescence anisotropy, are described.

  • Publication number: 20090208848
Abstract: The present invention relates to a polymer blend electrolyte membrane comprising an inorganic polymer having polydimethylsiloxane as a main chain, which has a pore structure at both ends formed by condensation reaction between 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane and tetraethylorthosilicate, wherein phosphoric acid is chemically linked to an amino group of the pore structure; and a proton-conducting polymer having a cation exchange group at the side chain thereof, as well as a manufacturing method thereof. Generally, proton-conducting electrolyte membranes have significantly reduced ion conductivity at high temperatures. However, proton-conducting electrolyte membranes have advantages in terms of efficiency and cost, and thus it is needed to develop an electrolyte membrane, which has excellent ion conductivity even at high temperature. Accordingly, the present invention aims to provide a polymer blend electrolyte membrane for use at high temperature and a manufacturing method thereof.

  • Publication number: 20090206054
Abstract: The present invention provides patterned features of dimensions of less than 50 nm on a substrate. According to various embodiments, the features may be “Manhattan” style structures, have high aspect ratios, and/or have atomically smooth surfaces. The patterned features are made from polymer brushes grafted to a substrate. In some embodiments, the dimensions of the features may be determined by adjusting the grafting density and/or the molecular weight of the brushes. Once the brushes are patterned, the features can be shaped and reshaped with thermal or solvent treatments to achieve the desired profiles. The chemical nature of the polymer brush is thus independent of the patterning process, which allows for optimization of the polymer brush used for specific applications. Applications include masks for pattern transfer techniques such as reactive ion etching.

  • Publication number: 20090209405
Abstract: A method and product made by using a polymeric ceramic precursor to synthesize dense, crack-free bulk ceramics in a technique using a sacrificial mold provides a ceramic structure for many technical, medical and industrial applications. The novel process uses an open cell material as a sacrificial mold to shape a ceramic precursor during curing. The cured ceramic green body can be machined and shaped to form the desired ceramic structure prior to final pyrolysis. The open cell material forms gas release paths to release large amount of gases generated during the pyrolysis of the cured ceramic precursor. After pyrolysis, an intact, dense, crack-free ceramic structure with high purity, strength and durability is obtained. Uses of the present invention include, but are not limited to, bulk ceramic parts, ceramic crucibles, a replacement material in some applications involving glass, silicon carbides, silicon nitrides, hafnium carbide and the like.
