Patent number: 11538362Abstract: A tactile display device including a nodule having variable stiffness under a surface to provide a near-real feeling of palpation for a physician. The device utilizes granular jamming technology using pneumatic actuation to control a nodule that maintains its shape while allowing the modulation in stiffness. The nodule includes two hemispheres, a contact portion and an actuation portion, forming a sphere. The contact portion and the actuation portion include different thicknesses and/or materials, while the dimensions of the dimensions of the nodule are maintained. As such, a physician can utilize the device to identify the difference between a normal lump and an affected lump even if the shape of each lump appears to be the same. With the tactile display device, due to the different levels of stiffness, a physician can detect the severity of the lump.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 2020Date of Patent: December 27, 2022Assignee: University of Central Florida Research Foundation, Inc.Inventors: Sang-Eun Song, Sakura Sikander

Patent number: 11539040Abstract: A method of producing a sulfonated polymer. The method includes providing a source for a quantity of a polymer having a shape. The quantity of the polymer is heated while immersed in sulfuric acid to 100-200° C. for a period time in a closed reactor containing an atmosphere and capable of holding pressure generated by a reaction between the quantity of the polymer and the sulfuric acid resulting in a sulfonated polymer, wherein substantially all the quantity of the polymer from the source is converted into sulfonated polymer. The sulfonated polymer is then removed from the reactor and dried. An electrode suitable for use as an electrode in an electrochemical energy storage cell is disclosed. The electrode contains amorphous porous carbon sheets made from a sulfonated polymer with a morphology wherein the amorphous porous carbon sheets have the morphology of the sulfonated polymer from which they are made.Type: GrantFiled: January 27, 2020Date of Patent: December 27, 2022Assignee: Purdue Research FoundationInventor: Vilas Ganpat Pol

Patent number: 11538989Abstract: An in-memory computing architecture is disclosed that can evaluate the transitive closure of graphs using the natural parallel flow of information in 3-D nanoscale crossbars. The architecture can be implemented using 3-D crossbar architectures with as few as two layers of 1-diode 1-resistor (1D1R) interconnects. The architecture avoids memory-processor bottlenecks and can hence scale to large graphs. The approach leads to a runtime complexity of O(n2) using O(n2) memristor devices. This compares favorably to conventional algorithms with a time complexity of O((n3)/p+(n2) log p) on p processors. The approach takes advantage of the dynamics of 3-D crossbars not available on 2-D crossbars.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 2018Date of Patent: December 27, 2022Assignee: UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL FLORIDA RESEARCH FOUNDATION, INC.Inventors: Alvaro Velasquez, Sumit Kumar Jha
